Re: Photography Thread
WOW, I like those, and as Ken Rockwell says, 'my work is all about color, "lol.
A moment of silence please on the death of a good friend today. I picked up a third D200 two weeks ago at Ado, I keep a spare of all my favorite cameras, at least the ones that are capable of full matrix metering on manual focus lenses, since I have become heavily invested in them. But since I had a spare, this one was going to my nephew...too good a deal to pass up. Turns out when I got it and took a pic and checked the EXIF data, it had 105,000 shutter actuations. I thought the D200 was rated for 150k, so I was not worried about 105k, outside of the general disappointment of getting such a nag, cheap or not. SO I took it to work today to test some things and it crapped out. Last night it had stopped reporting the proper aperture, I could turn the wheel all day and it stayed at the max ap on the readout. Today I took it out to shoot an old El Camino out back and it started having shutter errors. In a bit of a panic, I ran in to check the invoice, and for ONCE in my life, I had two weeks to go til I would be out of luck on the return. But ADO is nothing if not solid on returns, so I will get my $100 back and they will get their camera back. My nephew....well he's a little bummed. I had told him it had 105k but that it could crap out in a week or just as easily live longer than him with luck and care. Turns out Nikon was just about dead on. SOMEONE took it 5000 clicks over, and I put about 2-300 on it myself in testing pre-gift. I was hoping for option B, obviously. |
Re: Photography Thread
Picked up another good, cheap lens this week. $25...Gonna give it to my sister.
Nikon Series E 70-210mm f/4. it is a constant aperture lens, cheap used, but cheap in it's day as well, in case you don't know the E-Series story. But it has great bokeh, decently super sharp for a hand held, MF lens. Even though this one has some visible dust inside, on a blue field it is not that bad. She won't see it 95% of the time she uses it. BUT YOU WILL..... All hand held at the long end....f/8, base ISO http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps075aa7c4.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps37e424d2.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps721fc982.jpg And sadly, one of the main reasons for the low price.....DUST...and not just dust.....BUNNIES. I was gonna take it apart, I got a Sigma 70-300 back together and it worked, but I don't think I got it PERFECT, as now it is a bit soft. So this one just has to have a bunny farm. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...psbee92e0d.jpg |
Re: Photography Thread
I had another great opportunity tonight on my Greenway walk. i decided to take some more shots with the
70-210 Series E Nikon lens since soon it will be in someone else's hands and I like to thoroughly check something like that out Before I let it go. Maybe I want to keep it, eh? But no, in this case it is certainly going to be given away, but as you will see, I was sure glad I had it tonight. When you walk up on a bird and think "OH man, let me stop dead and see if I can get a shot off. nah, they always fly away. Well tonight I got a break. i walked up on a Mourning Dove and she didn't fly. dang, what a fine crop of photos! Mine for the weekend are based on my semi-usual farmer's market shoot,
and a pool party I went to over the weekend. i had to be on Daiquiri and photography detail, enjoyed both, kicked a55 in the drink making job. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...psf587300e.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps44792388.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps70c0b3ba.jpg |
Re: Photography Thread
man when I look at those photos above, I can't believe how I let the focus point get away from me.
The fiddle one was just an error, you can SEE the focus point clearly on the fiddle. The singer that was just me being stupid. BLAZING sunlight and I bet I was near wide open in aperture. Yep, I checked it and it was f/5, so at that zoom level, that was wide open. I continue to do the same things again and again, too 'busy' to stop and think about how I am set up. In the film days, there would be none of that. You were throwing away money for shooting stupid. On a day like Saturday, I should have been at f/11. I guess I wanted some dramatically shallow DOF since the singer was excited that a photographer was coming to shoot the party, lol. I wonder if he ever showed up, lolol. In my defense, the 35-135 can be a little soft, it was hand held, and I was screwing up the settings. but again, the camera was allowed to find it's own favorite point of high contrast to focus on, in that case, the MIC and her MOUTH. And I can't necessarily holler, the D70 only has 5 focus points, and I USED the right one. I just needed to be in f/8 or f/11. Since Justin died, I guess I have to carry on around here. Pulled out the oldest DSLR I have, my old D100. I wanted to test some lenses while I walked, and thought it would be best to go ahead and pull out some of the oldies to have a variety of pics from all the bodies. I find it ironic that this old camera takes such a great photo, and the D70 with a 'similar' lens could cough up such crap. In it's defense, the 70-210 is a better lens than the 35-135, but not by much. They are almost identical in period. And the D70 is not a whole lot older than a D100. The Nikkor 35-135 AF (shots above) is not all that different from the Nikkor 70-210 AF, which was what shot this Day Lily today. That said, I find the 70-210mm 4-5.6 to be an excellent lens. It is thirsty for light, but if you give it what it wants, it will reward you. But stop paying attention to your surroundings and how they will affect your settings, you can have the best lenses there are, and you can get crap. And in my defense, when I put on better glasses, the pics are not that bad, lol. but still TOO much light to be wide open. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0d878490.jpg |
Re: Photography Thread
I was messing with a couple of the cloud shots in Photoshop for various effects. It was near sunset and there they were, a huge bank of cumulus clouds right there catching the light. I was surprised the AF caught the detail so well

Same for flying planes, birds, ships, etc. They are also mostly immune from the localized haze you get when you focus on a ship or something on the same plane as you. The lens can work better on clouds than a ship or a far away building. That and you bought the best damn Nikon under $500. |

Re: Photography Thread
Once again, everything old is definitely new again. Thankfully prices on all these old lenses have gone down,
I think there was a real rush when the D700 came out, and maybe when the D200 came out before it, to buy up a lot of manual focus lenses that could stand in for the $1000-$2000 lenses that Nikon was selling to go with their new FX cameras. The real stars are still priced pretty high, but it would seem that there are a lot of hidden stars that people have already forgotten about or satiated themselves on, with everyone who wanted one already having one. I have been very lucky, in my crazy desire to read everything I can about some of this stuff, to have found a few real dandys for a crazy low price, at least in terms of the quality for the money. The Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI was one, man what a great lens....not cheap, but for $99, I really think the images are worth it. The Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS was CERTAINLY one, although I think I paid $184 for that one, so it was no 'bargain'. My favorite lens so far in life. I'd say that $184 for the best lens you own is a good trade. The one I am on and on about today is this Nikkor 200mm f/4 AI. I have had it for a month or better, and haven't put it on a camera yet. I thought maybe the good times might end. Boy was I wrong. This is a KILLER LENS. Not sure yet until I go to the zoo what I REALLY have on my hands, but the pics from my walk tonight seem to indicate it will give the 180mm a run for it's money. As ever, hand-held in fading early evening light. One thing I wanted to do but really couldn't, was to shoot at f/8. But I at least stopped down to 5.6. These pics showed me good things.....sorry, the usual subject matter. My hand-holding kind of softened them up a bit, for this is certainly a LONG lens, but the color and contrast are really impressive to me. As similar as these look from the 70-210 stuff from yesterday, these are all new pics today. Not a whole lot of variety on my walk....I like color. With this lens, I see insects where others see only flowers... http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...psbfa322c2.jpg Check out the bee on the upper left..... http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps80c2115f.jpg This one really got me with the DEPTH it showed, in addition to the color and crispness. http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...psb90791b2.jpg |
Re: Photography Thread
Shark, are you using a tripod there?? Those pics are sweet.
|
Re: Photography Thread
Ehh, the pics I took don't look very good on my work computer, lol. In fact the 70-210
looks better than the 200mm I was going on about. But still BOTH lenses were $40-$44 so I am still happy, lol. |

No, I had the camera set up on a railing for the train shot. 1/2.5 sec., f5.6, ISO 1000 +0.7EV

locos could use the application of a curve in Photoshop, and then IT would also be very close to a pro shot. Both very nice photos. Which lens did you use? If I didn't have a band to shoot tonight, I would go back and try my flower shots on a tripod. My laptop at home must be super sweet, it makes those pics look great. I get to work and think "Oh Geez, what were you going on about?" |
Re: Photography Thread
Well, what a night. I regret only one thing, that I didn't stay longer. I try to get to bed
by 9:00pm on weeknights where work is looming the next day, and the nights are so long with DST, that this outdoor gig kind of messed me up. The best shots in terms of overall atmosphere were right before I left and the sky was dark and the little light strings were beginning to overtake the ambient light. SUCKS I did that, but a free gig, ehh, I am gonna get my beauty sleep. If I had been paid for this, I would have stayed WELL into the good light time. You will feel like you already know these girls, I shoot em so much. But I like to shoot them because they know me and I am not likely to bother them much if I stand right in front of them and block the audience for a minute. MIDTOWN VIOLETS. This shot was not in focus, but I just LIKED the vibe.... In Photoshop, it is IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>CURVES, and then that gives you a box with kind of a bendy 'wire' kind of tool, that you grab by various points and it establishes little keyframes that you can move up or down to add various degrees of color and balance effects to your open photo, then save it. I will go home and post some screen grabs tonight to show you better. What it does basically is take the photo and enhances or reduces various attributes to make the photo more or less attractive. It takes a straight line and allows you to make bezier curves in it....the straight line basically represents your picture in it's current form. You use the curves to make smooth changes to lightness, contrast, color, etc. |
Re: Photography Thread
A little cross-threading......
But to make it official, Nikon D100, Nikkor 35-80mm f/4-5.6 AF-D (Thank goodness for the flash) http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0744781a.jpg http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/...psab2fd879.jpg |
Re: Photography Thread
I know you all hate to hear this all the time, but I did it again....
I bought some more dregs from Ado. They threw up a metric TON of cameras today in the used sections. There was one, a D200 that said "ISO and WB buttons do not work"....It was $150. I can set those in the Menu, and don't REALLY change them a lot when I am shooting. Just a GREAT OLD CAMERA that works with all the manual focus lenses, and I have a bunch. In EX+ condition, it is basically 65% off for something I don't even care about. I picked up a D90 for $200 that said "Flash will not stay down". Geez, half price for something I can place a tiny strip of gaffer's tape on and have a camera THAT GOOD? I almost never use a flash, and when I DO, I can just pull the tape tab. I much prefer to use the ISO to help my shutter speed in low light, or fast lenses. Also in Excellent condition, so that one is at least 50% off, and it's a killer camera. And for $50, I got another D200 that said "front and rear command dials not working properly"...... Now that one is gonna be a problem, lol. But I tend to have great luck with things I purchase there, so I figure it can be A.) a spare for parts, B.) a camera that only shoots in one mode, whatever mode its IN, lol, or C.) It will work SOME of the time and just give me a little trouble in the field, which I should be able to work around. For $50, I can GUARANTEE that I will be able to use it to take pics. I am guessing in rainy conditions, super-dusty and dirty conditions, or high crime areas. They are VERY well sealed. And you can swing one and KILL a man, and if you don't kill him and he takes your camera, ehh, it was $50. I know they are old, but they WORK SO WELL and are SO DAMN versatile. And if all I get from it is a shutter mechanism, I am fine with that. The large, bright viewfinder ALONE is worth having 4 D200s, haha. I have old man eyes. But I will give at least one away to friends and family. Basically now, though, I have to stop. I have stockpiled these cameras not because I am a TOTAL idiot, but something more along the lines of genius. I KNOW that I do not care if I EVER have a camera over 12 MP. Nikon has had Japanese law dictate that they cannot use open contact batteries anymore, so after about the D300, all of their batteries have been changed over. I can run D100, D50, D70, D90, D200 and D700 all off the same batteries. I have all the cameras in that list, and a good stock of batteries for them, after getting one with each camera buy, lol. So I have a fortress of bodies protecting me from too much progress in the digital age. I KNOW there are people who can use and actually WANT a 24MP or 36MP camera....but that ain't me. |

I'd like to apologize to the group for running off Justin. :) I think I was too hard on him with my constant cat comments. I feel bad, cause he was one of the only steady contributors on those days when nothing else was poppin. He will be missed. The rumor I spread that he died might be a little hyperbolic. On a related note, I am THROUGH ordering cameras. Until the D700 becomes a $450 item I will not order ANYTHING else. |
