Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Killer week, Tony!
I headed to the city to grab some bottles I had already paid for some time back (Old Haymarket SiB pick, another Whistlepig 2 barrel blend pick). Owner let me try the Barrel Bourbon SiB pick, grabbed one of those too, never had Barrel before. https://i.imgur.com/M2ikQgk.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
That is a nice collection of bourbon in two pictures! I did pickup two different batches of Barrell last week, have not opened either and have not tried it before but might have to change that here this weekend.

Went over to a friends house on Saturday, I'd seen pictures of his bar but never been there in person. Started with a Michters 20 next to a freshly opened 1972 Ezra Brooks 12yr ski boot decanter, and things went off the rails from there :r

Nice, Ben! What else did you guys sample, and what else did you spy for next time?

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
A couple Old Carters, Pappy 10 next to 2017 WLW, there was some 2020 Old Forester Birthday in there. I brought a Willett 6 year bourbon (my first and only Willett) that I think stood up with the M20 and WLW as the best, but it's really hard to tell. Just fun to drink whiskey with whiskey people. This guy is the shining example of "befriend a store owner" and gets first dibs on a lot of cool bottles as they come in at srp

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Hello. I saw today that a place in Newport Kentucky called Newberry Bros. Coffee/Prohibition Bourbon Bar is finally reopening their Friday/Saturday in person drinking part of the operation. Two hour visits and reservations required. (They have been EXTREMELY Covid conscious, you might say.) From what our local bourbon chasers (like Theo Cincy) tell me, the selection is unparalleled in this part of the country.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Sounds like a great night, Ben. I've only ever had the 4 year Willett, I am guessing it's just escalating goodness.
Any chance one of the Old Carters was American Batch 4 (139.6 proof)? I still haven't cracked mine, and they're already going for double what I paid for it a few months ago. Brian, please get a picture of the bourbon list from Newbury Bros. when you go inside. Love to see it. :tu |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I probably won't be heading there anytime soon, Tom. Theo is your guy for that. He'll probably throw a group together for a visit. Heck, come down here yourself and join them. Kentucky is slated to remove all restaurant/bar Covid restrictions on May 28. You'll have no excuses after that. :banger

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Has anybody tried the Woodford Reserve "Malt", "wheat", or "rye" versions? There is a local spot that has been selling them for $19.99 a bottle, a very, very, very reasonable price. I personally like The malt and the wheat even better than the normal bourbon.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Looking forward to hearing about the OC when you get to it, Ben.
Todd, that sounds like an outstanding price for the Woodford variants. |

At $20 a bottle, those could easily become a go to pour as a nightcap. Peace of the Lord be with you. |

This is a very nice bourbon, but it is hard to find outside of Wisconsin.

Son, that is the WP I sent. No super recent picks, but I agree, every WP group or store pick I have had has been stellar. Plus gives me a break from my constant barrage of 125+ proof pours. :r You know you are welcome here every day and twice on Tuesdays. :tu
Speaking of high proof, last nights pour, courtesy of Black Carl. https://i.imgur.com/9Yc8O2C.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Popped in to one of the local B&Ms on a whim and grabbed this plus a bottle of WT101.

Curious to hear your thoughts, James, I wasn't a big fan of Dicker's BiB.

Cracked open the first Barrell bottle on Friday night. Blend of Tennessee, Indiana, and Kentucky
Seemed very forward on the Tennessee flavors and notes. I hear dried fruit - apricot used to describe the flavors but had never really found that myself, I did in this one. The finish is light considering the proof for this. The Tennessee is speculated to be Dickel so interested to see what you think Tom. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Jay, my one and only Barrell is a single barrel, and I am not positive what the source is though I believe it's MGP. I'll have to try and find one of the blends, is that one a specific batch number?
Here's the tater sticker on mine for chits and grins. https://i.imgur.com/kqe7vUA.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Opened my oldest Booker's to day, 15-02 (Dot's Batch). It was good, less heat than the typical Booker's finish, a little sweetness on the palate. I'll reserve any real judgment until it's been open several weeks.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Barrell is too hard to keep up with, I had a sample from an 18 year bottle that was one of the best pours I had last year but I know there's no chance of finding that one so no reason to look. I know they're trying to settle down a little with Stellum and some of the bigger regular releases like Seagrass but I feel like it would take a lot of money and energy to really get into them like some people do. I don't have anything from them and likely won't unless I get to give it a sample first, the few I've tried have ranged from ok to amazing

I agree they are not something that is easy to keep up with, just something different. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Did a blind tasting last night from a friend, 5 ryes and last place by far was a 15 year WP10 pick. I don't know what was going on with that barrel but it was not good and so off profile from the typical WP10 or any other single barrels I have tried, fennel and anise and wet wood all the way. I went back through the 5 many times and every time thought that one was not good

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
One bad barrel don't spoil the whole bunch, Ben...with apologies to the Osmond Brothers.
Had some Booker's 2017-02 last night. It was the current batch when the world lost Chris Cornell 4 years ago yesterday. Listened to Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and solo stuff. https://i.imgur.com/c96SxfM.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Picked up some Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series 2021 Limited Release yesterday. Hope to give it a try today, maybe tomorrow....

Since opening this bottle, it's been hard to drink, the ethanol just obscured the flavor and made it less than enjoyable. I've poured out more than one pour. First time in a couple/few months, over half the bottle gone and suddenly it's good. Ethanol dialed way back, cherry syrup and banana flavors on the palate. Not outstanding, but certainly enjoyable now. Traded both my other picks, which are both supposed to be much tastier than this one. I may live to regret it, but life's too short for bourbon regrets. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Very interesting Tom, I passed on a lot of those (and actually got one, long story but I don't expect to ever actually receive it) but the ones I've tried were predominantly ethanol, which is why I never bothered to shell out the $80-90 for one, glad this one is turning around.
Has anybody tried anything fun with this new honey barrel finished trend? I had a sample of the original BM honey (really good but not worth $1k or whatever secondary is asking), got some from a VA distiller (Ragged Branch) and have a sample of the Binny's Starlite Rye Honey barrel coming in from a friend. Typically I'm not big on finishes but something about the honey impact gets me interested. Next weekend a local distillery who puts out a lot of MGP is releasing a wheat whiskey finished in honey, they've done a few 8 year toasted wheat bottles so I'm hoping this will be 8 year as well, looking forward to picking a couple up :dr |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I have not seen any that were honey finished around here - but I also did look specifically either.
The SB picks around here went down to 100 proof last year so maybe that was in response to a bit much on the barrel proof. Went down to the lake for a couple days and stumbled upon a bottle of New Riff that I picked up this week. Have not seen one up in the KC area before so a chance to give it a shot. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ben, I have heard that the Belle Meade Honey is head over heels better than any other honey barreled whiskey. I have heard some good things about the Starlite though...I am curious to hear your thoughts on that sample because I've seen that at Binny's in the past and wanna know if I should grab one if it comes back again.
Jay, I am a fan of the New Riff. The BiB stuff is good, some of the single barrels even better. |

Grabbed a couple of owner's barrel selects at my B&M. I've never had either of them. I believe they both use MGP bourbons.

Nice! If you find some MGP you like buy it up, it's only gonna get more scarce/expensive for anything over 3 years
Managed to track this down on Friday, only had a little taste but I liked it, gonna revisit soon :al https://i.postimg.cc/sXpH47PC/PXL-20...-000112423.jpg |
