Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ran down to the city to pick up a couple bottles I had long ago paid for. A different Tumbling Dice Heavy Rye SiB store pick and a Old Haymarket 7+ year SiB, Both in excess of 117 proof. The TD is 4+ year MGP, and the OH is Heaven Hill.
Then the story got good. Stopped in a corner convenience store heading back to the highway to go home. They probably had 20 total bottles of hard liquor in the place, all behind the secure counter. And one was a Booker's Tommy's batch (17-01). You don't find old Booker's like that very often, right? Wrong. Today I stopped at some dump liquor store on the way home from an appointment, and found a 18-02 (Backyard BBQ). Being that I'm not going bourbon hunting tomorrow, guess the hat trick ain't coming. ;) :r https://i.imgur.com/OgX4NYp.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3L0SQTo.jpg The KC is a 9 year pick from the Windy City Smokeout in 2018, and was a bargain. |

"Just going in to pick up a bottle for a friend"
"Not even going to look in the case, there's probably nothing good in there anyways" These are things I told myself last night, but I did look in the case, and there was something good. I blame Tom https://i.postimg.cc/pdLzKm3V/PXL-20...-031635884.jpg |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Stopped by the liquor store on my way home from the office this morning, they never have good stuff in the case in the mornings but they do sometimes put out some old picks they found in the back. Got lucky today and snagged another bottle of their 150 proof light whiskey, I heard from a good source that once all the high aged MGP bourbon got bought up everybody turned to the lesser desired whiskeys (wheat, light, etc) and bought those up too, mostly brokers who will resell you a barrel for a heavy markup. Future me is going to be glad current me dropped $45 on a backup bottle, it's surprisingly tasty and 13 years old

Nice! We're still on B520 here, had to have a friend from out of state ship me in an A121 because I'm impatient. Should be getting here in a couple days

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I only found one 2020 release it was the C in NJ and they wanted almost $100, I (not that this is a bad thing) could only get C19 last year

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Nice pickups, Gabe and Tony. :tu
Tony, that 1.75 ER store pick is super cool. Gabe, I went deep on that C919, best ECBP for me in the last 4 or 5 years. |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ok, I’ll be in Louisville the next week or so. Any regular production stuff I should be on the lookout for that I can’t get back at home in Michigan? I miss being able to get HH BiB for less than $10/fifth.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Some of the distilleries do bourbon sales in their gift shops, and even distillery only releases. Unfortunately Michter's doesn't have anything now.
Not sure what the bourbon scene is there anymore. I hear friends in Louisville complain they can't get a bunch of Kentucky bourbons that are plentiful in other states.... |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Picked up a bottle of this on a recommendation from the manager at the store. I'm no connoisseur, but I do like Old Fashioned, etc. Figured it was worth the $15 since you can't get HH BiB anymore.
https://whiskeyconsensus.com/wp-cont...ed-in-Bond.png Did try it neat. Vanilla, caramel notes. Not bad. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Having some Knob Creek 9. It's the first bottle I've had since they brought back the age designator. It's a damned tasty drink at a reasonable price; can't ask for much more than that.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Good stuff, Bob and James.
I love the 9 year KC single barrel picks for $49, great pour for the price if your store or group picks good barrels. Had some of this last night, sourced from Heaven Hill. https://i.imgur.com/wfMHzUa.jpg |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I believe everything to date from them has been Rye, but they are about to come out with their own bourbon. In terms of the Rye releases, some (like Whistle Pig 12, 15) are always finished, while others (like WP10) are never finished. The expression/label Whistle Pig 10 means that it is A) unfinished rye and B) at least 10 years old. Some stores in the last year or so have been able to get barrels that are much older than 10 years (I've seen up to 17 years), but unless the person picking the barrel took note of the distilled on date from the sample the bottle won't actually tell you what the age is, just that it's "at least 10 years old"
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Going old school with some Wild Turkey 101.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ben nailed it, Steve...and I am not a fan of finished whiskey personally so I stick with the single barrel unfinished WPs.
Last night was a Beam night. Shocking, I know. :r https://i.imgur.com/7yubINf.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ZaawGce.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
That a 15 yr KC Tom? I still have that JDBP rye, let me know if you want to swap some samples sometime.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Had a good week. Got an email last Friday that I won the spring raffle at Total Wine for the Old Forester 150. Saturday I stopped at Spec's and grabbed the new Pinhook Tiz Rye 5 year. Monday I picked up the Weller 107. Tuesday I got a call that I had the Elijah Craig 18 year. Wednesday was the EHT Small Batch. And today I got call that I had a allocated bottle of Elmer T. Lee waiting for me at the store. It was a really good week!
