It's a shame Detroit is the East now, and the Hawks and Sharks only see them two times apiece. Good for the Wings, though......The East sucks. :lr

But that argument doesn't make sense. The argument I made to yours was that Bylsma got the excellent record and the Cup due to those players above, thus the causation of Bylsma becoming the coach for the USA Olympic team - that and lack of sexy US coaches on the short list. It's the same fate given to Doc, and Spoelstra in Miami. Now we get to your statement of "oh wait," since he really does not have the players. We will see how good of a coach he is right here. That's the ticket.

That said, it's always fun to see the American players play in international rinks. Most guys grow up playing in fat NHL-sized rinks and radius their blades into the pros at around 1.5", versus Canadian and Europeans at 1.75" and 2.00". Sweden looks good with excellent long-stride wingers and quick puck-moving defense. Canada has so much depth, it will most likely utilize umbrella to leverage its incredible offensive firepower. Russia will be interesting to watch as international rinks are more about playmaking and endurance, rather than pure physicality.

Seems like several of the Hawks are looking ordinary....like you said, Derrek, they should be fine by playoff time.

Oilers scrub Dubnyk amd get Scrivens...should be an upgrade.

Ducks are ****ing unreal right now.

Two nights ago Vancouver had a 7 minute short-handed sequence, don't see that too often.

Well, right now against the Canucks they are about to start a 7 minute TWO-MAN disadvantage. Don't think I've ever seem that, saw the Hawks shorthaned by 2 for 5 minutes once. Wow.

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

I dislike Crosby a little more today....

Quote:

DETROIT -- Naming Sidney Crosby captain of Team Canada for the Sochi Games, even with his strong resume, wasn't necessarily a no-brainer. Not according to coach Mike Babcock.

"Jonathan Toews has won two [Stanley] Cups," Babcock pointed out Monday.

Toews says Sidney Crosby deserves to be Team Canada's captain for the Sochi Games and he's "excited to accept any role I get."

On Wednesday, Babcock revealed a little more about the process. According to the Team Canada coach, Crosby wanted to make sure Toews was fine with him getting the captaincy before things became official.

"Crosby wanted to make sure it was OK with him because of the fact that he's won a couple Cups," Babcock said. "[Toews is] held in high regard, to say the least, amongst coaches, amongst management, amongst players, and he's a huge reason [the Chicago Blackhawks] win as much as they do."

Team Canada picked Crosby as captain and named Toews and Shea Weber alternates for the Games.

It was honor enough for Toews.

"I think everyone knows that Sidney was the guy," the Blackhawks captain said Wednesday. "I'll be excited to accept any role I get. If it's more of a leadership role, I'm excited for that challenge. It's a quick two weeks, everyone really focuses on their own game but also tries to find that team chemistry that is going to make a difference for us."

Maybe maintaining that chemistry was behind Crosby's motivation to include Toews in the conversation. Either way, Toews said it's a good example of Crosby's leadership.

"For Sidney to ask the other guys for their approval, I don't think he needed to do that," Toews said. "That just shows the kind of guy he is and obviously a great captain in Pittsburgh."

I'm not sure, Derrek, I am guessing Sid? Regardless, I thought it was a classy move on his part.

Hawks blew a chance to gain 2 points on the Ducks and Blues tonight, getting one point for a shootout loss.

Krueger and Shaw in the shootout with Saad, Smith and Leddy on the bench? Hmmmmm

media can say what they want about the blackhawks being in a slump ... they always bring their A game to vancouver .

a little taste of what chicago will bring to the playoffs soon .

meanwhile back out west : scrivens makes 59 saves for a shutout !!!

Most of the Hawks stinkers have come against teams like Calgary and Winnipeg....put them againsy Anaheim, Boston, Vancouver and they bring their A game. Next 3 (LA, Anaheim and San Jose) will be a big test.

59 shots for the Sharks, and Scrivens stopped them all....amazing, Derrek...and a modern day NHL record number of saves for a shutout.

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

As a Sharks fan that was hard to watch. They had a ton of good scoring chances not perimeter and point shots. A lot of chances between the dots. I swear at one point there seemed like they had a force field in the blue paint. Edmonton is world's apart from the kings who they played Monday. From a game where every inch on the ice was a fight to a friggin track meet in Edmonton.

I like the extension and though I don't like the Avs giving up goals in the 3rd to make games close....I'll keep taking the wins.

Last night was a little bigger, extending the lead for 3rd in the Central.

GO AVS!

Chad Johnson had a nice shutout today (might be the first of his career haven't checked yet). Great comeback win after Rask sh!t the bed the other night.

Weird to see Andrew Ference in another team's jersey, but he's the "C" so that's awesome for him, great guy, good to see him with his own team.

Reilly Smith, Boston's leading goal scorer, not bad for the "and" part of the deal with Dallas, just goes to show you never know, because if I did know I never would have dumped him from my fantasy team :r

You are right Tom, the Avs announcers were talking about how it may be a time for some roster changes because of lack of effort from some of the players.

Blackhawks pull to within 1 point of the overall NHL lead with a whitewashing of the Mighty Clucks. Huige game for Crawford, Hossa and Toews with the tallies.

Sharks won last night because the hockey gods felt pity. That was the most lopsided 3rd I seen in a while. The Stars had so many pucks laying in the crease they couldnt tip in. Then the Sharks win in overtime. They had no business winning that game. Even the post game had trouble saying it was a good win.

We have a lot of up and coming D men that are projected to be quite good. one of our weaknesses may become one of our strengths.

Also, I was up early to watch the US Women's hockey team take on Canada this morning. The US Women's team had some tough calls & no-calls today and that loss stung a bit, but they will see Canada again and I can't wait to watch again. (I still want to know what that ref saw on replay that told her the puck went over the line before the whistle on Canada's second goal)

Can't wait for the US Men's Hockey to hit the ice!
