Tigers hang on to win despite Valverde trying to give away another one with 2 homers in the 9th. My Kingdom for a closer......

Re: MLB 2013 Thread
A's are pulling strong. Took the AL West last night.. See if they can hold that for a while now!
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Valverde bites again. Gave up a 2 run homer in bot of the 9th erasing a 2-0 lead. KC was down to their last out. :fl

That is a real classy move!!! |

Tom, I know there is a bit over a month, but A's are in Detroit for the end of August, for a 4 game series. 5er on line for who takes the series?

If the Pirates aren't careful, they're gonna make it mathematically impossible to lose 100 games this year.

I wish I was able to watch last nights A's/Pirates game. Sure seemed like a good one.

Big night for Alex Rios of the White Sox last night.
6 for 6 with a triple, a run, 2 rbi's, and 2 stolen bases. That, my boys, is a good night's work. :tu I believe it was the first time anyone ever got 4 hits off of Justin Verlander in a game, as well. I think I heard that on the tv awhile ago, but I'm not sure. Also not sure what happened to Justin last night, but Detroit's bullpen did exactly what it always does. *shakes head in dismay* |

I can't believe they have no SP prospects that they could bring up to do closing work. I know you don't want to wreck a kid by going cold and short, but they have to have a few guys with enough junk to get by without throwing all heat. It's not like they have to do much to be better than what Detroit has right now. Even a different look would baffle opponents for a couple months. I can only imagine the tapestry of obscenity that spews from Leland's head every time he goes to the bullpen. :lr |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Jeter got himself a hit in his very first at bat coming back from the DH, ended up becoming a run.
It hit the front of the plate and slow-rolled up to 3rd and Renteria couldn't handle it. He'd probably not have made the throw in time even if the one-hander came off cleanly. Like the Yankees or no, he's as great a ball player as has played the game. Gotta love him. |

Sox acquire Brandon Jacobs for Matt Thornton. yippie I guess:gary

How about the HR Derby? I only seen the highlights. I only wanted to watch it to see Cespesdes, since I am a A's fan.

Cespesdes put on a show last night. :tu :tu He's been here two years and can't speak a word of English?

Did you guys notice that when the guys doing the interviewing asked the 2 cuban players about their homeland, coming here, and what it meant, both players completely ignored the question?
That, my boys, is a sound fear of their homeland. Good policy, too. What could they say? It's way better here and Cuba sucks, or vice versa? It made me wonder why the sports geeks insist on throwing the question at them, and it's a good reason why Cespedas doesn't do interviews. He put on a heck of a show, that kid just reeks of power. :tu |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Hey Tom, it's a good thing the Tigers don't have a bullpen, because Leyland has no idea how to manage one. ;)
You have the greatest closer of all time, and you go to him in the 8th? I understand his reasoning, and I understand he's used to 3 run leads evaporating with his pen, but there's something about seeing Rivera in the 9th that just feels right. It was a wonderful scene at Citi Field last night. I had wondered if Enter Sandman would play. Kudos to the Mets and their fans last night for allowing that moment to happen. It was nice to see all the top players in the game pay homage to Mo, and let him have the field to himself. I do think giving him the MVP was a bit superfluous. When they gave it to Ripkin Jr in the same scenario, he had the decency to hit a homerun. As I mentioned, Mo didn't get the save. The one thing Baseball does better than all the other sports is give you dramatic moments. The slower pace of the sport, which most of it's critic's detest, is exactly what leads to the drama. It is unmatched in its ability to slow down the moment, freeze time, and have you hang on every pitch. Because of that, I feel the ovations last a little bit longer in Baseball. Over the years, the All Star game has lost most of it's luster for me, but I was into last night's game. Not solely for Mo, but for Harvey too. From a NY perspective, you have the youngster starting the game, and the old man finishing it (almost). That kind of story is easy to watch. |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Twice in a month that I agree with Dom. WTF??? Didn't at all understand why Leyland put Mo in during the 8th?
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
I fell asleep and didn't see the last few innings. That really is shitty what happened to Mo. He most certainly should have been given the ball in the ninth. He deserves it being one of, if not the, best closers the game has ever seen.
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Stuff like that is why I don't watch the All Star Game, Dom. ;)
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
Not sure how true this is, but heard that the reason Leyland (in his own words I think) used Mo in the 8th: He was afraid that, if the NL scored any runs in the 8th to take the lead, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to use Mo to close.

Went to a Braves game on the 28th of June to watch them retire Chipper Jones number...had a great time with the wife and took a few pretty good pics..check em out when you get a chance!!

Re: MLB 2013 Thread
I agreed totally with having Mo throw in the 8th.
It made complete sense. A lesser manager, or one who hasn't been screwed time and again by his bullpen in every way imaginable, may not have even seen the possibility of losing the lead in the 8th and not throwing to the NL in the 9th. Imagine the horror had he not used Mo and then lost the lead and didn't get to pitch to the NL in the 9th? Everyone in the world would have called him every name in the book, cursed his birth, and crucified him in the media. "Mo's last All-Star game" was literally why I watched the whole thing. I couldn't imagine not seeing him. There's no doubt at all that Leyland did the right thing. None. |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
What is the ballpark with the ramped up earth in center field?
I've never seen it before or never noticed it. I saw a replay where someone made a catch running up that ramp and thought "Are you kidding me? That'd take you right out by the knees." The guy made the play right at the very short center field wall. |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
That's Minute Maid Park in Houston, Scott.
I never understood it either, but I heard it was an homage to something, just can't remember. Edit: Apparently it has a name. Tal's Hill From Wikipedia Quote:

Re: MLB 2013 Thread
This article explains pretty well why he is such a POS:
http://www.slate.com/articles/sports...but_there.html "If you test positive and get suspended, then it’s standard procedure to explain away your absence from the field by passing the blame to someone else. If you test positive and don’t get suspended, then you should accept your good fortune and keep your mouth shut. Instead, Braun decided to run up the scoreboard on his ill-gotten victory" |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
This is costing Braun 3.5M. I wish he'd go back to lying, I just had to dump him off my fantasy roster.
It was as good a time as any to take a suspension. His thumb is nagging and the Brewers aren't going anywhere. I think 3.5M and 65 games is a bit overdone, but being as he already skated once, he had it coming and I think it's fair. It may be a bit too big a penalty for other guys who haven't had any history of this kind of stuff, if there are any. I haven't looked at the list yet, but I will in a few minutes here... Really? They only suspended Braun? Oh, brother. |

Re: MLB 2013 Thread
The Detroit Tigers added some help for their shaky bullpen Monday, acquiring reliever Jose Veras from the Houston Astros
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
I heard the Rangers might be willing to sell high on Joe Nathan. The Tigers need to win right now. This year or next, for sure. If there's anything left in the coffers, they need a closer. Period.
With Smiyley and Veras, they're on the way. One more piece and they have a good shot. I wish I knew what happened to Valverde. He's either lost his mojo completely or he's hiding an injury and he's a wrap. Regardless, I never see him becoming effective again. It's a shame. |
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
I would be shocked to see the Rangers make that deal with an AL contender, but I guess anything for the right price, eh Scott?
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
As a Rays fan, I am not an Ortiz or Red Sox fan. I think that he should be fined for that outburst in the dugout. What do you guys think? I just think he gets a pass cause he's big papi. He was tied to steroids but swore it wasn't him and everyone dropped it. Any other player do what he did and I think it's a fine.
|
Re: MLB 2013 Thread
If the team wants to fine him, cool. I don't think the League should get involved. :2
