I will be trying The Arran tonight. Will let you all know how it is. I had heard it was good and decently priced, so who knows.

Indeed. Please understand, I was speaking only of my own preferences. I've studied every region and it just so happens that the Speysider I will reach for, given reasonable selection, is a rarefied beast. That said, the ones I like, I very like.

As with cigars, I say 'dig what you dig' and don't let anyone call you wrong. :2

How about your thoughts on the Arran?

It is quite good for a 40$ bottle. On the initial sip, you get fruits such as grapes and pears with caramel and then on the aftertaste you get vanilla, cream and a burst of cake icing. Quite enjoyable if you ask me.

I'd be very surprised if you did not really enjoy the Glenfarclas 17yo.

I am still a scotch noob, but after all the stuff I have tasted, I always come back to this stuff. Freakin fantastic. I really love Oban as well, but is was a good bit more expensive.

On Friday I'll have a Whisky tasting with a few other guys...

The following is on the schedule (and they all really rock):
  • Bunnahabhain 1976, 31 yo, Murray McDavid
  • Inchgower 1974, 34 yo, Scotch Single Malt Circle
  • Caperdonich 1972, 37 yo., Duncan Taylor Rare Auld
  • Glenfarclas 1971, 35 yo, Whiskyfair
My personal favorite is the last one.... fantastic to be combined with some ginger bread.

Sounds like a great time Heiko.

I love Glenfarclas 25 year. I'm sure the 35 year was off the chain!

I still have to open the 17. I heard nothing but good things about it. I remember reading you liked Oban somewhere. I see lots of people have mixed feelings about it. Can you convince me its worthy of a place in my stock? :)

A few Nadurras... I've only had the Triumph variety per a recommendation from a bartender friend of mine at Craftsteak, and I really enjoyed it. Keep in mind I'm a fan of the Speyside singles like Macallan and Aberlour, some of the others regions are a bit too "medicinally peat-y" for my delicate palate ;).

I enjoy a variety of single malts. Have not tried so many, but those that I have I have liked. I tend to prefer islay scotches, but it is always good to get a change with a speyside here and there.

The Whisky tasting weīd yesterday evening was really awesome...

Got another bottle which I tried this morning: Ardbeg 1975 (bottled 1997) by Spirit of Scotland... that stuff really rocked the house...

Heiko, are the older Macallan offerings worth the buck? 18-30 year olds?

Speakin of the older Sherry finished Macallans itīs more a "yes" for me than for the "Fine Oak" stuff.

But itīs definetly a fact that Macallan is price-wise Rolls Royce... so, had to say, if itīs really worth the buck... Maybe you should try to find older bottling from Independent bottlers.

Thanks for the advice. Are there online retailers that sell Independent bottlers stuff? I've seen them being auctioned online before, but not really on any retailers site.

Most Whiskys are stored in Bourbon hogsheads... so, I'm sure you had one.

The difference is simple: Sherry casks gives you aromas of dried fruits etc...; Bourbon gives you more of the vanilla notes, in most cases the wood is also more intensive.

Yes indeed!

I am a big fan of Scotch blends. I find them to be just as complex as Single Malts, if not more so, and much more affordable in most cases.

My two, go to scotch blends are, Johnnie Walker Black and Teacher's Highland Cream, in that order. They are simply outstanding and very affordable.

I also enjoy and love, Johnnie Walker Gold (for me the Blue is way overrated) and Grant's 15yo.

When I can splurge a bit my absolute favorite at this time is Dewar's 18yo.

One of the very best blends I have ever had the chance to savor, on two occasions, is Chivas Regal 25yo. It is a most amazing scotch, in my top five of all time. The big problem with this, is that it is very hard to come by and when you do find a bottle its will cost you $300 +++.

Black is my everyday but I occasionally buy a bottle of blue. Sooo smooth. Will check out the Dewars 18. Used to do the dew before the black!! I will look for the Chivas 25 sounds good.

The Dewar's 18 is just amazing, but very hard to find! It's not too expensive but not cheap at about $80 for a bottle. The Chivas 25 is beyond explanation, it's one of those that you can only understand once you tried it. It is not cheap, at $300 plus a bottle.

Re: What is your favorite Scotch Whisky

Some blended scotches are quite nice, but compared to single malts they are not on the same level. Personally, I would not compare the two. I personally prefer single malts. As stated many times, drink what you enjoy most and have a good time. Chivas 12 was not bad, had it the other day with a Brickhouse Toro cigar.

Supernova is really nice... and if you like it peaty you should try to get the Octomore.... which has much more peat than the Supernova.

Just had a glass of The Glenrothes 1991 with an AF 858. This has to be the smoothest, best tasting Single Malt I have ever had.

I have heard a lot of bad things about this bottle. However, I don't let myself get sucked into negative comments as taste is subjective. Unless, of course, everyone claiming something tastes completely foul.

I haven't had much of a varied experience with Scotch (though I do love it), but a friend of mine from Scotland suggested Glenmorangie La Santa. I was able to find it at a local bar in Ann Arbor and it was absolutely fantastic. About $9.50 for a glass, but pure bliss nonetheless

Re: What is your favorite Scotch Whisky

Just picked up a bottle of Glenlivet 15 Year French Oak Reserve.

Sitting down to sample it, big fan of the 12 year. This is even better, doing a side by side with the remains of my 12 year bottle. The 15 is a lot drier but in a good way, not as sweet, and very woody. I taste a little citrus, but not much. The color between the two is very noticeable as well the 15 being a much deeper golden shade.

I am drinking each straight up (neat) with no ice. I figured that was the best way to compare. Highly recommend to try the 15 year if you like the 12 year Glenlivet.

Re: What is your favorite Scotch Whisky

Maybe I repeat myself, but you should NEVER put any ice in a Scotch Single Malt....

Re: What is your favorite Scotch Whisky

I wouldn't go that far with any statement like that, whisky is like cigars... it should be enjoyed the way you like it and not the way convention likes to tells you it should be. For me personally that's neat in a tulip shaped stemmed glass gently hand-warmed to fully release and funnel the aromatics but that certainly doesn't mean that someone who drinks a nice malt over ice in a tumbler is doing it wrong.
