I'm not a fan of the shelf bottle I have, but I've heard some of those single barrels of the full proof can be delicious. Glad you got a good one :tu

Very nice Steve!

Anyone have any experience with the Knob Creek Single Barrel bourbon (120 proof) store picks? There are a couple different ones at Binny's about 11 years old. I've heard great things about the 14 years old sps, but not much about the 11 years.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Just picked one in KC here 2 weeks ago and tried it (1st time). I had a "couple" Oktoberfest beers before I tried it and I it was the most mint I had tasted out of a bourbon. Tried it again the next night and it was there but fainter but still there so maybe it was just me.

A couple weeks removed I will give it a go here again this week.

I know I am no help whatsoever.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Thanks Jay. :tu

I was wrong, the Binny's ones were only 9 years. Had a gift card so grabbed one for free to give it a whirl. Picked the one with the fewest bottles left. Also grabbed the OFSBBS store pick for trade bait.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Nice snag on the OF. Local store got the first barrel in CO a few weeks back, I was watching the announcement and figured "that's a little pricey for a young bottle, I'll let everybody else have their fun" then immediately saw how much other people cared about it and wished I had grabbed one or two to pass along. FWIW I did have a pour from that bottle last weekend and it was pretty good, very easy to drink for a high proof, but it still seems expensive

icehog3 09-16-2020 08:47 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

The OFs are going for more than double what I paid on FB secondary groups, so I figured maybe I can get one of the '15 Booker's I need out of it. If not, I'll drink it. Had a pour last night and was pretty happy, that Beam peanut funk was front and center.

Nice picks Tom! I have really enjoyed some of the OFs lately.

The OF i have had have been great. have a couple of the BP picks that are real solid. Everyone around me loves the 14-15yr KC SP. My guess is if you like bookers you will enjoy the KC SP also. I have also hear that the 14-15 year KC picks are going away/ pretty much done now.

I snagged a 15+ year old store pick for what I thought was a very reasonable price on a FB secondary group yesterday Andrew, so at least I'll get one before they go the way of the dinosaur.

Got a purty little trifecta of samples from Mr. Stearns today as well, a very nice surprise indeed. :D

I needed to pick up some daily sippers, went in torn between EC94 and WT101, both were on sale EC94 for $26 and WT101 $21 (PA prices) So I walked out with both!

Two winners for sure. I don't know how available picks are in PA, but a good EC store pick is as good as it gets for that price range, I usually keep a couple around

I've been looking and I am guessing we are out of luck this go-round. That last one was the only one I saw after seeing how much resale/trade value it was bringing. Flipped that one for a 2015 Booker's batch I needed. But I have been, and will continue to look. :tu

Always appreciated! Have you been able to try the bookers 30th? I have not but have heard good things. I kick myself for not buying one back when it was around 400.

I haven't tried any of the variations (30th, 25th, Rye, Noe Select), Dave, and at the current prices, probably won't unless it's a pour at a bar or a friend's place. One friend promised me a sample of the Rye when he opens it. I told him the way the price is skyrocketing, keep it sealed and we can sell it and have a Maker's Mark in Maui on his dime. ;) :D

No losers there :tu

I just got a bottle of EHT Single Barrel in, I tried a sample of one blind and thought it was solid but wasn't wowed, I still have a sample of that one I'm going to side-by-side with this bottle when I crack it. Had a friend that got it from Binny's for $69.99 and didn't want to keep it, I couldn't say no :D

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Yeah, can't say "no" at retail, Ben. :D

Hung out with a local guy and had my first taste of EHT Barrel Proof. Yeah, I'd pay over retail there. :D

Had a few other cool pours. Old Forester Birthday, and a couple different Kavalan expressions. One was aged in Sherry casks, the other was their barrel proof "base". Not much of a finished whiskey guy, but these were really freakin' good.

Yeah, I see crazy secondary prices. I'd love a bottle, but not at gouger rates.

Two pours of Booker's last night, Shiny Barrel and Country Ham. Shiny is good, but the Ham is the sh!t. :dr

Last night I was fortunate enough to have a pour of GTS thanks to Mr. Stearns. Amazing how so many flavors can shine over the oak when it's been in the barrel 15+ years. Thank you Ben. :D

Later in the evening I craved some more. Nothing on the bar to outdo the GTS, so no need to try. :r

It took a lot of courage but I did give it a try. Not as bad as I thought it would have been, but I wouldn't go as far to to call it decent or good straight. Mixed the raining with a little Dr. Pepper and it was a decent if interesting mixer but I will not seek it out to do it again.

Is Midwinter Nights Dram as good as everyone is claiming? Some MI bourbon threads I’m on have been going nuts about it the last few days as the new act just came out. Trying to decide if I should try and seek it out with the hefty price tag. PS anyone in SE MI have an idea where I can find a bottle of Stagg JR or Weller 12? Those are my two unicorn bottles I’m trying to get my hands on. Thanks

Did a 3-bottle comparison of EHT Single Barrel on Saturday (third was a sample from a friend). I think the general consensus was that they are all a little different but still pretty similar, the main takeaway was that even though it's the same proof as the small batch these were all noticeably better, probably should have thrown a pour of that in but it's something I've had a bunch of and am familiar with

I'm biased, but I liked my bottle the best, I thought it had a thicker sugar note

I was having a pour from my OWA pick bottle last night and figured I'd do a little taste of the shelfer to go with it. The shelf was all sweet caramel, the pick had a little cinnamon spice to it, tasting side by side really let their differences show :tu

Shelfer would probably be better for casual drinking in large amounts (so smooth and sweet) but the pick was more interesting, made me think a little. The pick takes the overall win but I've been trying to slow down on drinking that one, so the shelfer is what I'm usually grabbing for a Weller fix

Saw this in one of my B&Ms and thought I'd give it a try, mainly because it's bottled here in MS and some of the whiskies used in the blend are distilled here, too. It's got a good amount of rye in the mash bill, which is right up my alley.
