just polished off a bottle of old rasputin and I have to say, its obvious the beer is quality, and no doubt a shining example of the RIS style, but I just couldn't get into the style.... I was looking for a change from my constant diet of DIPA's, but this one wasn't quite it....

$18.00 for a 4 pack of Ten Fidy? Yeah, when I can buy Brooklyn BCS and Old Raspy for less than half of that, I think I'll pass.

I don't mind paying that much if it's warranted, but Ten Fidy is just a run o' the mill RIS as far as I can tell

Same thing with GUBNA. Sorry, pass.

It has a great chocolate taste and doesn't fill you up like you would think it does. It is probably one of my favorite tasting beers at the moment. It does pack a whallop @ 12% though

I was thinking the same thing the other day, dropping 16.00 on a 4 pack of GUBNA felt exciting and unknown at first, but then after tasting it, no way would I pay that again. There is something to be said when a beer like that makes something like DFH 90 min (my benchmark for DIPA's) look cheap.... anyway, Oskar Blues needs to get their pricing down for me to continue to try their stuff, 4 bucks a can is asking too much.... just my :2

For your first i suggest a RIS aged in bourbon barrels, infused with brandy soaked cherrys and Madagascar vanilla beans

IMO it was good but nothing unique and certainly not 10-12$ a bottle appealing. The blue bottle was cool looking though.

I'm drinking another Surly Abrasive Ale, and enjoying this one much more than I did the first one. Guess my tastebuds were "off" the other day. The malts are sweet but not cloying, The hops are perfectly balanced to the malts, and there's a nice floral note as well. There's also an "earthyness" on the exhale that I like. I'm looking forward to drinking the other two and see if they're as nice as this one.

Wolavers Pat Leavy's All American Ale. A good hoppy amber.

Re: What beers are you enjoying?

Drinking a Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Bier Ale. It's an "American Strong Ale," which seems to be somewhere between stout and porter. Pitch black like stout, but a thinner mouthfeel like porter. This is a super tasty beer, deep malt flavor, a bit of chocolate, and a nice hoppy finish. I could drink several of these easy, but the 7.5% abv would sneak up on me.

Some thoughts on side by side of Founders Breakfast Stout-KBS and Goose Island Bourbon County-Goose Island Nighstalker.

I compared a few beers with some friends on Friday night. We first had the Founders Breakfast Stout which was the first time either of my friends had it. Right out of the gate they loved it, both of them are beer fans and stout fans. We moved onto the KBS which was also interesting since one friend had one from last year while my other friend never had one. It was noticed that after I poured the KBS it was darker top to bottom to the Breakfest Stout. First sips across the board was this blew the BS out of the water. The flavors of the coffee, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate were not hiding at all. The other big difference was the KBS had a very long finish that changed which the BS never had.

We continued the evening of beer and movies with Nightstalker. The NS started out more creamy with a little hoppiness also some kind of fruitiness to it (compared to BC). While drinking it I hard a hard time picking out all the flavors in this beer. It was all over the place at times. This was the first time any of us had tried it and amazed my friends and I. I would place this beer in my top 5 under KBS. Onto the last beer of the night GI Bourbon County. Now from what I've heard is NS is the same beer in BC, just aged in bourbon barrels. Which is hard to believe cause these are night and day compared side by side. If they are the bourbon barrels do some crazy things to the beer. I know everyone has a different palate and notice or pick up things differently. I was the only one tasted the alcohol right away while my friends didn't notice it till they were half way through. A couple more flavors I picked up with BC was toast (I know call me crazy) and towards the end I got Hostess cheery pie.

My favorite beer of the four was KBS but in a close second was Nighstalker.

Now you're hooked, once you start down the sour path forever will it control your destiny. ;):D

Had Hunapu Stout from Cigar City last night, just a glass but I got to keep the Cigar City "snifter". :tu It was good, the chiles were very mild, only noticed them at the start, as it warmed up I think the malty/roasty flavors overpowered it. Overall it was pretty sweet, but well balanced. :tu

You need a bigger glass. Then you'll only be having one or two glasses, which is much more responsible. :r
