I know that is a jab ;) ....and I agree, they are the 4th best team in the league.

That said, they are 3-1 against the top 5 teams in the East and 3-2 against the top 5(6, as they sit 5) in the West. Winning 67% of your games against the best teams in the NHL, not to shabby for a team that wasn't supposed to compete.

Add, if you take playoff teams(as currently stands) from both leagues, they are 6-1 against the East and 6-2 against the West.

They sure have made it a fun year more me, so far!

That should have read "....and I agree, they are not the 4th best team in the League."

No longer able to edit...

Who knows, maybe it was a Freudian slip...:tu

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

E.J., I was just jabbing, but I think 4th is probably about right, I can't put them ahead of the Blues, Sharks or Hawks at this point. OK, maybe ahead of the Blues. :r

Doesn't matter what the polls say anyway, it is all about head-to-head come April :)

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

I know, I took it in the way intended....:tu

The Blues have the Avs number, 2 of their 6 losses are to them.... Outscored 11-4....

Even with almost a third of the season over, I am really just hoping they make the playoffs. Then all bets are off, just win 4 before the other team does and move on!

It just doesnt seem right the Avs should be ranked that high. Maybe I'm just a prejudiced hawks fan.

This is awesome and just another reason hockey kicks ash!

http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2013...r-sakic/15879/

Brett Hull to Sean Avery: “You do not get to talk to Mr. Sakic”
By Mike Chambers
The Denver Post

Great read by Adam Proteau of The Hockey News on Monday about the game’s “code” and respect for its best players. Proteau writes that in Sean Avery’s rookie year in 2001-02, when he was coming into the league with the Detroit Red Wings, Avery tried to chirp the Avs’ Joe Sakic before a faceoff in front of the Detroit bench.

“You do not get to talk to Mr. Sakic,” Brett Hull told Avery, after pulling on the rookie’s sweater and making him sit down on the bench.

Proteau’s complete story is here. It speaks to our recent two-part series about hockey fighting and having players police the game, and I’ve always liked Brett Hull and obviously everyone in Colorado loves Joe Sakic.

As Proteau writes, “this was hockey policing itself without an enforcer.”

“With the guys we had on our team – myself, Brendan (Shanahan) and Stevie (Yzerman) – guys played hard and played to win, but when we played Colorado and all the other great teams, we had a lot of respect for them,” Hull told Proteau. “They were champions and unbelievable players. And I just never believed in all that chirping anyway.”

Wild looking like they did earlier on in the season. Controlling the flow for the whole first period against Tom's deadly Hawks squad. Hopefully we can keep it going!

Every time you start to think this team may have something special they remind you why they will never get it done in their current configuration.

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

Only a couple bad games for them, Mike. Hawks are 0-2-1 in their last 3. They had a couple bad losing streaks in each of their SC seasons, sometimes it's a wake up call they use to improve.

Went to the Wings game last night or should I say the Grand Rapids Griffins game at Joe Louis. Too many injuries against a good Ducks team. Was not a good game :(

Patrick Kane has points in 22 of his last 23 games, including his 6th GWG last night.

Sounds good, Derrek, except Kane and Toews play together on the power play and the odd shift, but the lines this season have been:

Patrick Sharp - Johnny Toews - Marian Hossa

Brandon Saad - Andrew Shaw or Michel Handzus - Patrick Kane

You know I love me some Johnny T...Toews is still one of the top 3 defensive forwards in the league, but Kane's two-way play is vastly improved the last two seasons.

Kaner is second in the NHL in points....if he played with Toews fulltime, I think he would be leaps and bounds ahead of Sid.

Is there a better tandem of the blueline now than Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook? Nope.

Now.....what do we do about Hall, Eberle, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov? They could use another 2 or 3 David Perron's on that team to show 'em how to play both ends. I wish they would get it together, I'd root for them against every team besides the Hawks.

tom

should know better than to second guess you about the hawks :) . kieth & seabrook ??? nope(non better) ... but still it takes about 9 nhl caliber d-men in the system to win a stanley cup(the exception being l.a. a few years ago).

the oilers???only time will tell ... I am done b!tching about management & owner ... non of them listen to me anyhoo .

for the record ... toews remains my favorite hawk ... long before ovechkin or Crosby I would take toews for the person to build a team around .

On that we agree, Derrek. Proved it to me again last year in the Conference Semifinals....there's no better leader right now in hockey than Johnny Toews. :tu

Firstly, Oilers need to make the commitment in Ilya. Secondly, they need some players who inspire confidence - not players who are talented. Much of this is picked up off the ice, but you can tell how the team gravitates towards members - and it doesn't have to be the captain, just several guys that create that spark and keep the team in spirits. Darren McCarty comes to mind as the best example...not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, but if you've played team sports, it's that guy you look at to fill the low moments with sincerity and spirit. The most successful of teams will have the biggest share of these players.

Anyway...really looking forward to the Avalanche / Blackhawks game this week. Avalanche, Ducks, Kings, Blues, and Wings are the teams I follow.

^^^Reading that, love having Landeskog... Appears to be a monster of a leader, even at his young age. Long story short, could not agree more...GREAT TALENT is going to bust if they flounder with leadership.

icehog3 12-25-2013 12:15 AM

Re: NHL '13-'14 Season Thread

The main reason Edmonton brought in Andrew Ference, and brought back Ryan Smyth. Not even some solid leadership can overcome a young, inexperienced, weak defensive core, especially when the young stars look at backchecking as an afterthought.

Avs have done pretty well against the Hawks the last couple years. That being said, LET'S GO HAWKS!

(Frankly, I am even more concerned/excited about Hawks-Blues tomorrow).

I see some posts about snubs and as an Isles fan of course you know I am wounded that they did not select Okposo. Boby Ryan is being left out too??? people do not realize how goo KO has been since about game 20 of last years shortened season. he is second in the league for american born players in points. and he gets gritty...But the biggest snub I think is leaving Yandle off the list. Good luck team USA I will be rooting for us to bring home the gold.

Disappointed today for Martin St. Louis and Brent Seabrook. Marty for sentimental reasons, and Seabrook because he is better than several of the d-men picked.

Sorry but that's like saying Doc Rivers is an amazing coach for bringing the Celtics a championship that one season where we were stacked with 3 future HoFers.

Detroit comes in and gets beat yet again by SJ. Cleary with a blatant head shot with the game out of reach, elbow to the head. Bertuzzi bleeding can't see anyone sad about that. Sharks continue dominance over Detroit.
