My Tigs are clinging to that first place spot. Although 2009 is still fresh in my mind. I wish Verlander could pitch everyday.

Sox or Indians, just praying for no collapse (which they have done every year for the past 5). 2009 took the cake; losing the tie breaking game 163 to the Twinkies after being up 7 games with 15 left (I think). Brutal.

Brutal? From the outside, it looked more hilarious. It was like the old Alphonse and Gaston joke: "You take it! No, you first! No, you sir! No, I insist, you take it! No, you!" :r

Beckett Vs Shields tonight is a much watch!
If not for the injury, this is a game Beckett would win.
He made his career coming up big in spots like this.
I just don't know how much missing a start and the ankle will effect him.
Even if it does, I still expect a gutty performance.

Shields is no slouch either!

Alright...so the debate begins to heat up...who wins the AL/NL MVPs?

AL: Granderson isn't hitting for high enough average, but Cano has come on real strong lately. Does Verlander even garner votes being a pitcher? Do Gonzalez and Elsbury cancel each other out? Michael Young has got to be given some consideration.

NL: This race is wide open.

NL: This race is wide open.

In the AL, you could consider three Tigers:

Verlander
23 W
5 L
236 IP
53 BB
238 K
2.36 ERA
0.92 WHIP
.192 BAA

Miguel Cabrera
.334 BA
26 HR
97 RBI
.438 OBP
.563 SLG
1.001 OPS
102 Runs
100 BB (20+ intentional)
44 Doubles

José Valverde
44 Saves
0 Blown Saves
65.1 IP
33 BB
60 K
2.48 ERA
1.22 WHIP
.199 BAA

Cabrera should receive plenty of consideration as well. Not sure how I missed him.

Congrats to the Tigers!
I know I would be excited too if my team took near a quarter century to finally win the division,
no matter how weak that division is! :tu ;)

You don't get it, Dom. See, they print up those shirts and caps before the fact, since they have to have them handy. When a team loses, the merchandise is normally shipped off as a charitable contribution to some Third World location . . . like Philadelphia. :D

For the Tigers fans out there. Gruff old skipper enjoying a stogie during the divisional champ celebration and getting a little choked up.

The White Sox released managaer Ozzie Guillen from his contract tonight. They expect compsensation if he signs as a manager for 2012, as he was committed to the WS for one more season. I expect him to be managing the Marlins in '12.

Now let's go Angels! :D

Mets exercise Terry Collins option for 2013. He's done a bang up job with that hes had this year. Love to see what he could do with a decent pitching staff. :D

Re: *2011 MLB Thread*

Jose Reyes leaves Citi Field today, in what may be his last appearance as a Met, to a chorus of boos. Why? Well, he bunted for a hit in his first at-bat, raising his average to .337057, or 2 1/2 points above Milwaukee's Ryan Braun for the NL lead. He was then lifted for a pinch-runner, and went into the dugout, to the total disappointment of the partisan crowd, who likely came to this otherwise meaningless drizzly afternoon game for the sole purpose of watching Reyes fight for that honor.

Exactly 70 years ago today, on September 28 1941, Ted Williams started the first of a double-header and got a hit in his first at-bat to lift his average to a lofty .400. He then continued to play the remainder of both games, went 6-for-8 on the day, and finished at .406 for the last season he had before a pair of wars put a crimp in his career. Even a Yankee fan like me can't deny, here was a man.

I shall not disparage Reyes for what happened today, yet I will admit I would be delighted if Braun goes 5-for-5 tonight, and takes that narrow "victory" away from Jose.

icehog3 09-28-2011 02:19 PM

Re: *2011 MLB Thread*

I am completely with you on that one, Thomas, and I am not even a Ryan Braun fan.

Reminds me of 86, when Boggs sat the last 4 games against the Yanks, to beat Mattingly for the batting crown.

Shame on Reyes, and shame on Terry Collins!

kelmac07 09-28-2011 05:10 PM

Re: *2011 MLB Thread*

Being a Mets fan...I am completely torn on this one. While I want to see Reyes become the first Met to win a batting title...I respect the game enough to wish he did it the right way. He should have played the entire game, as he was 4-5 lifetime against the Volquez. In true Mets fashion and a typical ending to this disaappointing season...Braun will go 4-4 to snatch the title away from Reyes. :bh :bh
