That was just a pitching clinic tonight!

Not much offense at all until late. CC didn't pitch all that bad except the first inning. He just made the same mistake to Chase twice and paid for it both times.

Good start. :tu

Hopefully the Phillies can keep working the count like they did tonight and get into (what I think is) the Yankees' suspect middle relief.

Here are the 2009 stats for both on things that shed "excitement".

Runs Phillies 820 Yankees 915
Hits Phillies 1439 Yankees 1604
HRs Phillies 224 Yankees 244
RBI Phillies 788 Yankees 881
Avg. Phillies .258 Yankees .283
Slugging Phillies .447 Yankees .478

Add 103 wins to 93 and I can clearly see why you think the Phillies are a more exciting team.:r As I said earlier, blind.

Hey Carlos, something came to me tonight while watching the game. If the Phillies were able to plug a DH into the lineup every game, their stats would be awfully similar.

Or maybe I'm not thinking straight and am not seeing it right....you know, blind. ;)

Not really. If they had the DH every game that would mean they'd be playing in the AL east, and with the record they had wouldn't have made the playoffs ;)

Lee pitched great. CC pitched ok. It's only one game, still a lot of baseball to be had.

Uh.....yeah.....okay.

I was looking at the stats Carlos listed. Not sure how that equates to "not really". And to think the Phillies wouldn't have made the playoffs is an assumption. I, on the other hand, assume they would have. Maybe if they win back to back World Series you'll give them some credit.

I was looking at stats too. They had a worse record than the Red Sox and Angels, if they played everyday with a DH they would not have made the playoffs with the record they had. I don't think having Ben Francisco or Matt Stairs in the field everyday would have very much impact.

I do give them credit, they have a great team. If you look over my posts there is no Philly hate. This is the match up I wanted, I even made a post two months back stating so. I reserve my burning hatred for the Red Sox ;)

Having Ben Francisco or Matt Stairs in the lineup everyday certainly would have been a vast improvement over having a pitcher bat 3+ times a game. With either one of them playing everyday (or at least platooning) I think they would have had more HRs, probably RBIs, and possibly hits, runs and SLG% too. Innings would have been extended that ended because of a pitcher's ineffectiveness during an at bat.

And no one knows what their record would have been had they had a DH...each game would have played out differently.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.:tu

FWIW, this is the matchup I wanted as well.:)

While as a Yankees fan I am upset over the loss, I tip my hat to Cliff Lee for putting on a pitching clinic last night.
The man was amazing.
As is always known, good pitching shuts down good hitting.
That was a big win for the Phillies.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but tonight is a must win for the Yankees.

Going into Philly down 0-2 will be too big of a hole to climb out of.

Sorry about that. I couldn't help myself. That just seemed too easy to pass up.:tu

Honestly, last night was exactly what we (Phillies fans) hoped for and expected with Lee on the mound. He's been incredible this post season. It's a different ball game when he's pitching.

I have a feeling tonight is going to be a lot different. The bats are going to wake up on both sides and I think we see quite a few more runs scored.

I think we'll get 4 or 5 good innings out of Pedro, but then the pen is going to have to go to work.

With the loss of game 1, tonight is a must win indeed.
Down 0-2, even the almighty Yankees may see that win in 5 some predicted and some of just blew off.
I still have faith they will make this a series but that series goes via a win tonight.
Will certainly have me on pins and needles.
I am hoping I don't get to feel like a Patriots fan ala my Giants.:r

It was a shame to see Cliff's shutout blown by a bad throw.
Cool thing is, he could care less. :)
If there was one thing that impressed me last night, it was the Phillies composure. They're calm, and absolutely certain they're going to hand the Yankees their ass.
I can't wait for the game tonight. I hope the Yankees show up and give Philly a game.
What a series already. I couldn't be more pleased. :tu

"Must" win tonight? Am I the only one who remembers 1996 against the Braves? Down 0-2, the Yankees won 4 straight to capture their 23rd WS.

Hey, I want a win in The Bronx tonight too, but the only MUST win is the last game.

I remember this well.
I also remember the Diamondbacks well.

I also think this is a double edge sword.
It reminds us all what happens in the first few games doesn't really mean much.
As has been said, what really counts is the final game.

The pen's been strong this year - don't judge by last night. And at the end there's Mo, whereas Lidge has been a blown save looking for a place to happen all season.

You mean the Yank's pen? A season era close to 4 ain't gonna cut it against the Phillies. I know that's not bad nowadays, but it's teh suck when you're putting it up against the World Champions.
If the Yanks starters don't go deep, they are in huge trouble. The Phillies will absolutely shell their bullpen just like they did last night.
There used to be a day when a bullpen's era was supposed to be around 2. It gave a team a chance to do well.
I promise you, a 3.79 era bullpen ain't gonna get it in the Series. (and that works for both sides.)
I sure hope the Yanks have what it takes to make this exciting tonight.
One game does not a Series make, but I'm not making any bets on the Yanks after they didn't show up last night.
What's scarier is that they threw the kitchen sink at the Phils and came up empty.
At this point, I'd honestly be surprised if it didn't end up the Phillies in 4.
I sincerely hope it goes seven games because I hate for baseball to end. :)

AJ pitched a decent game today. I think he could've done just a bit better but I'm not gonna knock the man. He did his thing.

That call on first though was a close call so I really wouldn't consider it bad officiating. From where the ump was standing he couldn't see the hop.

I WISH HE WOULD'VE THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good win for the Yankees tonight. AJ pitched good, a couple nice HRs and the bullpen of Mo to close it out. Looks like Joe has completely lost any trust from the bullpen in a close game.

I think that's going to end up being the key in the series...for either the Phils or the Yanks. When through, I think it was 3 1/3, and Burnett was close to 60 pitches I liked the Phillies chances, but he did a nice job of settling down and working some quicker innings.

AL also did not have his usual blow up inning in the 5th or 6th. That was the key to the game.

No doubt. The Phillies usually thrive on those blow up innings. Their lines are usually something like 0 0 0 1 0 5 0 1 0....if the Yankees minimize those types of innings, there could be some trouble. Hopefully that won't be the case. :D

Cmon Joe.... you had to be sweating it out just a little after they took the lead in the second. I'm shocked Burnett had it in him to pitch a good game, more so after giving up that first run.

Nice win, this is shaping up to be a solid series.
