Giving Opera Mini a test run. Was previously using Perfect Browser, but I think Opera Mini might win out. We'll see.

Another Opera Mini user tryout....its wicked!

Also DL'd the Justin.TV app and its not half bad on a WiFi connection. Haven't had a chance to try it out on 3G yet, will check back.

Any tips on making cheap international calls using the iphone connected via wifi? My wife and I are going to Mexico in a couple weeks and I want to call home occasionally.

Justin, ATT started allowing VOIP over 3G about a month back, several apps (Fring, etc) are updated to do this now. Might be the cheapest way to do this.

I think Skype just made this possible, too. I'm thinking I got something in the mail the other day. I don't have use for it, but it might be worth a look.

Re: Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

So if I understand correctly then I can make free skype to skype calls if I have wifi? I would just need to have the person I'm trying to call install skype.

Resipsa 04-15-2010 06:52 PM

Re: Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

Forgot that using 3g for data would probably incur data roaming charges, not sure how that works out of the country.

As far as I know, skype iphone app has always worked over wifi, but whether there are charges or not I don't know.

I don't use it, I use ICall, which is free. One of my brothers lives in the mountains and I get no cell service at their house, so I just use Icall if I need to make an outgoing call over their Wifi network.

ICall lets you use Wifi to make voip calls, but not to a computer directly to a house phone or cell phone. much better than having to talk to somebody sitting at a computer. Downside is the calls are limited to 5 minutes I think, but you can call right back if you go over that so really not an issue for me.

Just found an app called Gorilla Bob. If you guys like shooting games it's pretty sick for $.99 not to mention his life bar is a cigar!

Yes, or you could just sign up for a Skype account and buy some credit to use while on vacation. Skype's LD rates are generally much better than telco's. With Skype credit you can call from Skype directly to any land or mobile number as if you were using a normal phone for the dialing. The Skype app only works over wifi though, not wireless data. Probably a good thing since that would jack your data usage pretty quickly.

As for apps: AirVideo is absolutely brilliant.

Works on the latest iTouch as well as iPhone and iPad. Real time conversion and streaming off your computer for pretty much every media format your can think off: avi, mpg, mkv, wmv, etc. It's also bandwidth aware so it will scale back the video quality if you're connecting over 3G and internet instead of over your home wifi. The server software is free, the full client costs $2.99. This one app is making me lust after an iPad, so perfect for watching tv and movies on the deck with a cigar!!

Re: Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

I recently played with uHear. It words really well to test your hearing. It's a quickie throw-away app.
World Series of Poker Free is a well done Texas Hold-em app.
I installed Dictionary.com's Dictionary app. I use it constantly. I'm really happy with that one.
GoodReader is 99 cents. Best .pdf reader app I've found. I use it for reading all my ebooks.
The coolest app yet is Dragon Dictation. The uses for it never end. I'll use it more on my iPad later. I've thought of lots of ways I can use it, and I plan to write a few books soon. That'll make that a breeze.
I may have mentioned Goby. It's a "find stuff to do" app. Best one of seen yet, it actually doesn't suck like all the other ones I've checked out. They really got it right. It's worth a lokksee just for the cool factor.
SoundHound sucks. Digital Pinball sucks.Siri sucks. I've found a bunch more that are just plain worthless for lots of reasons.
I think the top five on my phone that I use all the time are:
Navigon
12 Step Companion
Olive Tree NKJV Bible Reader
Wikipanion
Dictionary
IMDb
MLB.com at bat 2010
GoodReader
I could probably live without any of the other 100 things on my phone. :D

I grabbed that one to show Lisa, she loves Sushi. I don't.
It's a super cool app, I can see where it'd be lots of fun.

I recently downloaded Aroundme. Say you're away from home and need a donut. You just open it up, either choose a category or type "donut" in the search, and bang. Donuts.
I know there's tons of ways to get this done, but vie been traveling a lot, and it makes it quick and easy to find whatever I need wherever I am. It's nice and clean and simile, too. No crap.
Then I can click on George's Donuts and there's directions in google maps. I wish it'd kick up the destination in Navigon, but I can get by.

iSnipe for us precision rifle shooters. Spend less time calculating and more time smoking a cigar between shots. If I didn't smoke cigars, I'd likely just calculate it manually to keep my brain working.

I really like it and you'll see why at the end of my response. The same work can be done by hand but this is just plain faster. As far as accuracy, its more accurate than I can shoot put it that way. The processing power of the iphone/itouch lets this thing crank out crazy accurate numbers. I tend to do a lot of mixed-distance 'gong' shooting to practice hunting. I'll use the laser range finder to get a distance of say 335 yards, then plug all the info into iSnipe and adjust clicks as indicated. Never missed a gong shot since. As for doing it by manual calculation, well lets just say I've had to take up reloading due to the amount of ammo I was going through :)

Sounds good! thanks for the info. I think this might be just what I need for shooting 500< with my .223 bolt gun.

Thanks,

Haven't had my iPhone for long, but for those of you into homebrewing, I picked up:

Brew Pal

Great app that helps in recipe formulation, mashing, expected efficiency calculations, and can even categorize your recipe to the proper BJCP style if you're considering competition for your brew. Great app!

Re: Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

My favorite apps are:

Pandora
Shazam
Bump-easily share contact info between iphones
Photobucket-photo hosting
ESPN scorecenter
flixter-movie times
Photoshop mobile
engadget-high tech news
Skype
Remote-control iTunes from the phone
Units -quick unit conversion app
Facebook
Google
What's On?- TV channel listings. Can program your favorite shows and set up alerts to remind you of when they air.
Dragon Dictation-Speech to text software, and it works REALLY well as long as there isnt a lot of background noise. Unfortunately it doesnt recognize a pause as the end of a sentence, so you have to say period or exclamation point etc., but the app is great for texting while driving or if you cant text with both hands for whatever reason.

As for game:
Tower Madness
Cartoon Wars
Stick wars
I Dig It
Zynga live poker
Beer Pong
Toobz free
and my current addiction: ANGRY BIRDS

Re: Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

I tried Pocket Informant Lite.
It's an app that syncs with your google calendar and/or Toodledo and Microsoft Outlook.
You can merge a bunch of calendars or view them individually.
It's incredibly useful because I can merge my calendar, my daughter's, and my woman's and I can see what I'm supposed to be doing at a glance.
I liked the lite version so much that I ponied up the 13 bucks for the full calendar app.
This thing has removed so much confusion from my life that I can't even quantify it. I use it constantly, and I love it.
The Lite version is free. Google calendars is free. Give it a shot if you have any need to merge a bunch of calendars, whether it be family or work.
Did I say it's awesome? :D

Hulu won't allow browsers to display video on mobile phones. They want you to buy Hulu Plus... In order to get this to work you would have to have the browser set to some other kind of host -- not sure what that might do to the video feed (they may customize it for different browsers).
