Lagavulin 16 - been drinking it for about 10 years and trying something else makes me like the Lagvulin even more, lots of smoke!

Ardbeg is fantastic and I do believe the 10 yr old won whisky of the year in 07
or 08.
Truthfully, I agree that there are better Scotch Whiskys than Macallan, but it is a great bottle and I enjoy. Balvenie is one I enjoy as well. the 17 yr sherry cask a bit more than the 21 yr Port Wood.

It isn't single malt, but the white label is my regular pour when I want something on the rocks. The 12 year is pretty darn good as well.

I have a bottle of Macallan 18 from their Fine Oak series. I like the Sherry 18 better but it was pretty smooth. Just seemed to lack much in the way of character.

I highly recommend the Glenfarclas if you can find it. Very crisp and smooth with a heathery sweetness. In that respect a lot like the Dalwhinnie but with a bit more body.

And the Blue is something unique for a blend at least to me. Such a nice almost refreshing quality to it.

Now I've got a craving for one ofthe other and nothing is on hand! :) I'll have to make do with a Dalmore Cigar Malt which isn't quite as satisfying as the name would suggest. ;)

Being even newer to SMS's than Cigars, I have come to like Aberlour and Glenmorangie, both 10 year old if I am not mistaken. (nope, Aberlour is 12, just checked)

The Aberlour was very nice served up neat, but I found the Glenmorangie needed a little water to help it along (or me I should say!) and at this moment I am drinking some Glenmorangie on the rocks, and its not bad.

I am also enjoying a decent hand rolled corona from Stogies Smoke Shop in St. Augustine that I picked a few weeks ago. Not bad for a no-name stick.

I had the 40 yr at a tasting, it was crazy good.

Soleful, what do you want to spend on the learning process and have you had single malts before? If so, what kinds and what did you think of the flavor profiles? If you never had a single malt, I would reccommend a "lowland" region whisky . It will be a flavor profile of sweet butterscotch with a smooth finish. You may try Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan or my pick for the brand new scotchdrinker, McClelland Lowland, it's about $22 per bottle. The others start in the $40's.

i guess i'd start with a bottle under 40 then if i enjoy it, I could pick up the next bottle a little pricier

Anybody try Lismore Single Malt? I picked up a bottle for $28.00 Saturday. A nice fruity nose, bit of a short finish, but otherwise not too shabby.

Picked up a bottle of McClelland's Highland the guy in the shop talked me into, it was one of the cheaper ones, and one of the only ones suggested in stock. I'll give it a whirl tonight after the gym.

Not to be technical, but these are the only ones in your list which are actually Scotch Whisky. To be considered Scotch Whisky it must be distilled, aged and bottled in Scotland; every other whisky that doesn't mean that requirement is not scotch.

Speyburn 10 Year. A real bargain IMHO.

I love Glenlivet 18, Nadurra, Glenfiddich 12, but this Speyburn compares favorably. :tu

This is a good one. Very good if you're just starting to dabble as well. It's got a clean finish and not overpowering at all.

The McClelland's is good for what it is, but keep in mind that it is a younger version of other Bowmore owned whiskeys. I believe they're all five years old, aside from the Speyside 12. Given the age you might find it to be a bit rough around the edges.

Look for a few of the glens to start. You should be able to find Glenfiddich 12 for under 40. Its a good jumping off point. It has nice flavor but won't overwhelm an unfamiliar pallet.

Glenlivet 18yr. is the best I have had.

Glen Moray 12yr. for $19.99 is very good.

For a blended Grant's is very good. Nice and smooth. It is produced by the makers of Glenfiddich.

Highland Park 12 YO is a great all round pour. Gracefully aged in oak casks it exhibits a nice balance of peaty smokiness and heathery sweetness.

Just finished the last of the "Teachers Blended Scotch" that I had. It's one that I truly love and it's ashamed that it's gone. I don't think it's available in the USA any longer. There is a "Teacher's Cream" which is available and is pretty nice as well, but it's not the same as plain old "Teachers".

I picked up Ardbeg 10yr on Sunday for safekeeping, Arran 10yr to drink for the meanwhile, and tomorrow I am going to pick up some Glenfarclas 17yr old.

A high five goes to the next person to suggest me a good speyside scotch. I was going to go with the A'banadh, but my freaking liquor store seems to have ordered the worse batch, #30. Anyhow, anyone recommend a good speyside scotch, single malt. I am ready to go up to 100 on this one as well.

Oh, and ordered me a 4er of Glencairn glasses :)

You may want to try Balvenie Port Wood 21 year Old, Glenfarclas 105 or the Glenfarclas 17 year old!

All three are exceptional!

I am picking up a Glenfarclas 17 yr old tomorrow as stated above. So its good you mentioned it. Looks like it is probably good.

The Balvinie 21 port wood costs 195$ here. Shame. Our amazing government is worth :2s. SAQ.com

You can select english and see all the single malts. I am looking for a nice overall scotches to add to my list.

The Balvenie 12 year Old Double Wood is also exceptional, just slightly under the Port Wood. A vary worthy Speyside, at a much more reasonable price.

I'd be very surprised if you did not really enjoy the Glenfarclas 17yo.

I have a feeling this will be a good choice. I have 3 ounces left of Ballantines 12 yr old single malt that was sent to me from Italy as a gift. I decided to finish it tonight. It was quite good.

I really hate it that we can't access Laphroaig here in Montreal. A shame really. I tried Lagavulin the other week and it was nice and smooth, peaty and smokey. If only the A'bunadh was not batch #30:sh

In comparison to the 17 yo the 105 is like solvent....

I don't one what's available over there but a really nice Speysider is Mortlach... underrated distillery imho.

One of the best from the Speyside I ever had was an old Glen Grant... 30+ yo.

If you wanna spend some more bucks, luck out for this... from Independent bottlers... you won't regret it.... this Whisky is mind blowing.

You can check out the spirit archive on my blog for some reviews: http://eldondoswitzerland.blogspot.c...s-reviews.html

Just picked me up a 17 yr old Glenfarclas. Does any one know if this is non-chillfiltered. Not a big deal, but I do not see it written anywhere on the bottle.

I'm hard to satisfy with a Spey, but whew... that'll do me up good. :dr
Exceedingly HTF, though, if you don't live in the UK or Japan.

Generally speakin: a Whisky which is bottled with an alcohol strength of less than 46 % is always chill-filtered. Exceptions are if they are not reduced with water to that strength, then they can be un-chillfiltered.

In the standard range Bruichladdich is one of those, having at 46 % and un-chillfiltered....

The choice of Whisky that you take depends on many factors.... what you gonna smoke while drinkin it, what's the correspodning food etc.

The range of Whiskys that I have starts in the Lowlands and goes over Highlanders and Speysiders to Islay (which are my favorite ones)... but in the end it depends on the mood and the situation. A sweet Sherry bomb is more suitable to a good desert... a salty one may go perfectly with some seafood etc.... you can continue it endless....

Absolutely. I think that in general, Islay's are best with cigars. But then again, to each their own right. So it all comes down to 1 word, we all like scotch.

Depends on the cigar.... imho....

A strong cigar goes well with an Islay like Lagavulin or Laphraig... a light cigar might be better with some less "extreme" Scotch.... but as you said... it's all personal liking...

I really enjoyed THE Wild Scotsman, distilled by a local(to me) fella- the only master distiller in the USA!
