Got to sample some wonderful bourbons at Shack this weekend, including Four Roses Al Young 50th Anniversary. Also found a single bottle of Weller 107 on the shelf at regular price.

That four roses sounds awesome. Way to go on the Weller. It just so happens that my local called me today saying they had a bottle for me. The new cork top one as well. I think I need to have a drink of my open bottle of the 107 again soon. I’ve been reaching for the McKenna too often.

Do you drink a good bit of this? I am curious whether or not you can tell a difference after the label change. Some folks say they cheapened it when it when from hand filled to rapid pour assembly line. Personally, I cannot tell a bit of difference .

Couple pours of Redemption Rye last night. Drinkable, but far from being one of my favorite ryes.

Scored a bottle of willet rye and pot still while in KY this weekend. Still searching for the family estate bourbon. Will get back to KY sometime over the year to keep adding to the collection.

Going to try some of this tonight. It's from a place a couple of towns over. The owner goes up to Bourbon country several times a year, tastes a bunch of casks, and selects some to be bottled for his store. I've tried about six different offerings and all have been great. This'll be the first from Maker's Mark I've tried.

Which was your favorite of those last rounds?

icehog3 09-30-2019 05:26 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Andrew, I'd rank them:

Blanton's
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Four Roses Single Barrel

The other 4 are good to fair. I'll buy Contradiction, High West and Bulleit again as they're good for the price. Definitely won't be buying Redemption again.

I really like the four roses I have had. I just noticed the stores up here carrying the Elijah Craig also I'll have to check it out.

Those Elijah Craig Barrel Proof offerings are some of the smoothest high octane whiskies I've ever had. I had one early last year that was something like 132 proof and with a just a splash of water went down with not a bit of burn.

I've got the A119 and B519 releases, James, they're 135 and 122 proof respectively. I agree with you 100% about the smoothness, I think the 135 proof is even smoother than the other.

The Small Batch is good, just not as good as BP. ;)

Went high octane again last night to pair with an NC.

Went with the higher proof ECBP tonight...A119 is 135.2 proof. A few drops of water to open it up, and it was delicious.

Tried the regular EC last night. There an ice cube in it and was very good. Might relax the BP search, Not sure I would enjoy the higher octane right now

Glad you liked the regular stuff! Much less expensive too.

King James and I killed about a third of a bottle of Weller 107 last night before dinner, then moved on the ECBP (122 proof) after dinner.

It took the BH Dark Rye and a couple other finished ryes for me to realize I am NOT a fan of finished bourbons. I would definitely not recommend the Dark Rye unless you are a fan of finished bourbons and port. :2

Good to know, I can't say that I am one way or the other with those yet. Will have to experiment with them more.

Drinking something from the decanter tonight... I forget what I put in it but I'm 75% sure it is rabbit hole.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I actually liked the dark rye, but I'm a big fan of port...not an everyday drinker of the dark rye, but a bottle of it around for a change of pace drink suits me well...also think it goes really well with a nice cigar!....The finished bourbons can be hit or miss...like scotches finished in other barrels, like sherry, etc....but I like Sherry, she was a good time...

Been a while, Keith. ;)

The Jameson 18 Year Select is amazing. Bought it in 2007 and didn't crack in until this year. Wish it continued to age in the bottle. :r

That it is. It may be my favorite whiskey, period. I even prefer it to the Midleton bottlings (which, if you look closely at my avatar, that's what's in my hand). One of the best comparisons between 18-year Jameson and Midleton I ever read was a reviewer who wrote "Midleton is the bottle you have on your bar to impress your friends. Jameson 18-Year is the bottle you have to savor every drop."

Glad to find a kindred spirit, James! I like the comparison. And of course, in 2007 the 18 year was much less expensive than the Middleton's. Not the xase any more.

Booker is a barrel strength bourbon in the Jim Beam Family. The master distiller focuses on the sweet spots of the racks and comes out with a couple releases every year. I am just getting back into the smaller batch bourbons but i believe they have all been up in the 120+ proof. They also have Little book which i believe is just released once a year.

When in KY a couple weeks ago we did a tour at Jim Beam. There i was able to try some and with an ice cube really enjoyed it. I have to add that i have a soft spot for jim beam as it is the bourbon that really got me into bourbon. It will probably sit on the shelf until i work my way back up to the higher stuff and/or find another bottle of it.
