Assassin's Creed 3 and Borderlands 2 are going to be two of only a few games this year that I'm a) really excited about and b) will actually play all the way through

I almost feel like the Assassin's creed games are rolling out too fast, I mean I know they have a story to tell, but it's like they are making expansion packs and selling them as full games.

:hm

I see what you're saying but I can't completely agree, the games have quite a bit of play time. That said it really isn't hard to make a few changes to essentially the same game and come up with a new storyline.

I enjoy the franchise though, reminds me of the Hitman games, speaking of which I can't wait for the new one.

Although I couldn't playthrough Revelations, it's terrible....I'll have to complete it though :bh

Making a few changes and coming up with a new story line used to be called an expansion pack. Because it takes a fraction of the time and effort that an actual full game takes, the cost should be adjusted accordingly, IMO anyway. Another 60 bucks for what is essentially just a story continuation is a major peeve of mine.

Bill86 06-16-2012 06:01 PM

Re: Games thread!

Frankly paying $60 for a game is too much period. Not sure when they made that change but I do not support it at all. I agree with the cost 120%.

They are getting lazier and lazier with games I will give you that as well.

Getting pretty bad, I haven't been IMPRESSED in a while.

Ah hell, that could be why. Diablo 2 was like 7 years of my life, so the hype for this 3rd one was beyond anything I've ever anticipated.

Blizzard has a bad habit of ruining a good thing.

Re: Games thread!

Man if I had a computer that would run D3 I'd be all over it. It may not be perfect but I owe it to Blizzard to try it out after all the years I spent on D1, D2, Starcraft, Warcraft 2, and even a year and a half on WoW after it first came out. I've spent the last couple years just console gaming though so my computer is #1 in storage from the move, #2 broken, and #3 woefully out of date.

If I didn't have my tablet I wouldn't even be able to leech wifi and surf the net.

I'm still bitter about them breaking up S2 into 3 games and trying to get $140 per person out of the game.

Making 2 ....supposedly end of the year. They are priced "accordingly" they sold the first for 60 the next two look like 40 a piece. So $140 for the complete game. The original SC was like $30 for all 3 campaigns. Broodwar was an additional $30 or so for 3 more complete campaigns. $60 for 6 campaigns, so far I've paid $60 for ONE campaign.

Rip off :td

I played a couple hours of the first one and got bored fast. I don't know, I like the old classic RTS form from C&C, SC1, TA, etc. They're trying too hard to improve on a really good model.

They won't get any more money out of me for the other two until a couple/few years from now when someone offers a "classic bundle" for short money.

I don't know if my tastes have changed or if it was the aforementioned changes to the core game play, but I was never able to get into WC3 or SC2 eithe. Which is odd considering how much time I poured into their predecessors.

Oh it's them.

Head to GOG and pick up "Total Annihilation" for $6 and you'll see what I mean. Yeah the graphics are a little wonky but it's fun as hell. I jsut spent $15 on "Command & Conquer: The First Decade" from amazon. Just wonderful. The worst thing to contend with in the good old games is some really goofy cutscenes.

No retarded attempts to build in plot trees or RPG elements (whatever that actually means.) Just great turtling and zergling rush tactics :p (well, ok. not JUST that.)

I definitely couldn't get into SC2, but really it was only because it's been so long and they sold me 1/3 of the game. I really wish they would have kept more of the classic units in the game as well. Thought I do like some of the new styles of play.

If only you could combine SC1 and SC2, that would be a game.

I love TA, it is a much overlooked classic.

Re: Games thread!

I just wish they'd take the data files of some of the classics and apply them over the top of a new engine. (yes, I know it's not QUITE that simple.)

Like... Morrowind for instance. I could never finish that as it was just too buggy on my rig. But put that on the version of the engine that Skyrim's running? That would be amazing! Hell, even Daggerfall for that matter.

These things were classic. Now it's a special effects and "how many gaming mechanics can I jam into this thing?" fest.

Also, get those kids off my lawn. Their baseball belongs to me now.

Bill86 06-19-2012 02:18 PM

Re: Games thread!

Yeah I never got to play Morrowind either. There were so many good older games I'd be up for them getting put on current engines as well.

Not a lover or hater of DIII, it is what it is, but my computer is over 5 years old. Now it was a very expensive build back in the day. But it doesn't even meet the min requirements Blizzard lists for the game and runs. If you computer is in or close to the may run, but we won't support category they list it should run DIII just fine, albeit on low resolution.

It isn't a First person shooter, it is Third person. Just like Ghost Recon, Hitman games...etc.

The graphics are very good, but I just got into it so I can't say much yet.

Seems like they have introduced more environmental combat, which seems interesting. We'll see as I get further into it.

It still is a war game and the genre is so played out. So I don't know if it will go the distance yet.

Cool, thanks. Yeah I'll stay tuned for more impressions. I don't really have room for anything else now that I've jacked my skull so firmly back into EQ2.

But if it's sufficiently compelling I'll tap it.

Further getting into this game, I don't get it. The "story" seems completely ridiculous. The gameplay is so-so. Shame because the graphics are quite nice. I'm having trouble really getting into it. It looked like something different, but eh...I don't like the direction at all.

Unlike Bill I love the new Ghost Recon. At least the multiplayer since it's all I've played. I think it's great and requires more thought to be put into it that just running and shooting like in COD etc.

I play it every now and then. Usually when I don't want to think about what I'm doing haha.

I have been playing the HELL out of Magic The Gathering 2013. I miss playing it for real :(

Damn MTG, wow that has been many years. I haven't played it in probably 10 years. I stopped collecting when they changed the face on the cards.

Just finished a replay of Mass Effect 3, paragon engineer.

I thought people whined too much about the old ending. It wasn't Hollywood. But it was interesting. (I entirely concede the point about choices through 3 games dissolving into almost no variety in the end game though.)

But the one they replaced it with? 5 minutes of Admiral Hackett spewing the most hackneyed "work together" monologue that's ever been written? GAH! The magic rescue of crew members sacrificed in the previous ending? Awful.

They gave in to the lowest common denominator mob gamer forum whiners and botched it.

Yup, by way of a free DLC. It's not different in substance enough to recommend playing through. I just wanted to try an engineer + Ashley spec rather than sniper + Tali.

Why would they change it? The game was done, it was over. They screwed the pooch with the idiotic ending that made no sense and that should be the end of it. They won't be winning back my business with some pandering ending change. I've already traded me3 in to gamestop and see no reason to ever play it again...

Explain the game to me, it seems like they mashed every popular game I have seen in the last 5 years into ONE game. I see mages, assassins, monsters, robots, dragons, swords, AK-47's......the trailer is crazy and I understand absolutely none of it. Did they take bits and pieces of every game and make it an MMORPG or something?

They did something relatively clever. There's no class system. It's all skill based. The skill tree divides at the first level into ranged/magic/h2h (3 weapons each.) So you end up with 9 top level skill categories. You can equip two 'weapons' at a time, so that gives you some flexibility. You earn points to build up into whatever kind of spec you want. You can't really gimp yourself since you can conceivably rank all the way up in everything. Many (most?) of the quests are replayable after a 1 day lockout for more xp.

However, taking a page from GuildWars, you can only have 7 active and 7 passive skills 'live' at any given time. So, while your capabilities keep building, your actual load-out has to be tweaked. There are recommended profiles that you can use (pure dps, ranged, support, heal, tank, etc. or hybrid), but you're under no obligation to.

crafting is there, but the mechanic is sparse. based on deconstructing items into raw materials then using 'toolkits' (which determine max quality level) to build items. There's no "trade XP" notion at all. Still not sure how it'll pan out. I'm ending up with lots of raw materials from deconstructing things I don't want to bother going to a vendor and selling.

Combat mechanics are pretty fluid, a little button mashy. But there's some nice complexity that doesn't get all AoC.

The setting is "modern fantasy" and in the PvE zones, the three different factions are intermixed transparently. Starting zone is the same, etc.

There are also some puzzles involved in the side quests. Not "minigame" nonsense. Actual puzzles that you have to exercise some brainsauce to figure out. They give you an in-game browser to do 'research'.

I think I like it. But I'm not going to get really addicted to it. Skill points come pretty fast and the more advanced stuff takes some willpower to save up for (rather than just spending them wide and shallow.)

I think they've layed the groundwork for some interesting stuff. The base mechanics are there, the questing is solid without being overly grindy. The plot chain is solid, and some of the npc conversations are absolutely hilarious.

7.5/10 ? maybe 8?
