It's gonna be a tough decision. I'm for keeping him, but at his soon to be new price, it's gonna hurt us in a lot of other needed areas.

Cool pics, Hugh! The snow pic looks like the one taken last year.

Old news again, but Bruce signed to a multi-year deal. Hoping Votto follows suit before he becomes a Free Agent.

I am not sure why they focused on a less than stellar Jay Bruce, why not offer the reigning MVP. :hm

Another free agent that the Reds could have really used ends up somewhere else. Greinke to the Brewers. It looks like they could have offered Stubbs in that trade and gotten a much better prospect with him. Pony up some cash or players and make the team better. :bh

I think it was smarter than paying Votto at this time. Let's try to lock him down after next year. Hopefully he'll keep up his performance, but we may take him for less next year, unless he wins MVP again.

Re: Red's Fans Check in

Seeing the full trade for Greinke and Bettancourt today, it looks like the Reds could have gotten him for Stubbs (who strikes out more than anyone) and a couple decent pitching prospects (whom the Reds can't groom anyways). A Cy Young pitcher and a good middle infielder for an over rated OF and some pitching projects sounds like a good trade to me.:bh

Rhodes is Texas bound...:( He won't have another season like he did this past year, so maybe that's good news. Clears up some cash.

Looks like Edgar Renteria is gonna be our everyday shortstop rather than Janish. A deal for around $3 million has been made (not sure if it's official yet). Jocketty promises that Janish will be the starter, with Renteria playing backup, but with Dusty's track record, my bet is Janish loses his spot in Spring Training until Renteria gets hurt (b/c he's more than injury prone).

I would love to see Janish play everyday. Sadly, I agree with you though Andy, and I think Dusty will play Edgar.

I guess I was right. Renteria is a has been in my book. He still has a slight bit of potential, but to be honest, I'd take Cabrerra over Renteria at SS anyday. Sucks to be Janish right about now.:td

Joey Votto signs a new 3 year deal and no one is excited? They have some decent hope with him in the lineup. Now if we can just find some outfielders and some pitching, we could compete for a wild card spot. :tu

I'd like it better if it were for 5 yrs, but it is what it is. At least we don't have to worry about arbitration.

My guess is Votto is waiting to see if the Reds can compete for a few more years before he gets stuck. If they stink up the joint, or don't surround him with talent worthy of an MVP, then he will be peacing out in 3 years. I certainly don't think he is destined for the highest bidder when that time comes, but he will definitely be looking for a contender. :tu

I'll bet you a 5'er they don't win the World Series and a 5'er that Stubbs doesn't bat over .300 :tu

I can see that. He said in an interview after the signing that he couldn't see himself playing for any other team "right now", but that he definitely didn't see himself playing for NY or Boston (good news).

CC Sabathia is talking about opting out and the best player in baseball is going to be a free agent after the season. Its too bad the Reds won't make a run at either of them. Good news is they are saying the Cubs are going to be making a serious run at Pujols so we won't miss seeing him multiple times a year. :hm

Not a chance the new owner of the Cubs (Ricketts) will commit $300 million. And even if he did, don't you play the same amount of games Vs the Cubs that you do against the Cards?

That was the point, that the Reds would see him just as many times. I guess I worded it wrong. There are only about 4 logical options for him if he makes it to free-agency, Cubs being one of them. I am not sure any team will be offering up the reported $300 million/10 years he wants, I am guessing $255-260,000,000 for 8 years gets it done. If I were betting, he ends up a Cardinal for the rest of his career but the open market will dictate the price. :tu

I just didn't read it as tongue-in-cheek humor, Adam...I re-read it now and I see exactly what you meant. ;s

The big joke here is that Ricketts and Hendry will not want to commit $300 million over 10 years to a player who will be 41 when the contract expires....so they will offer him $300 million over 5 years. :r

You can have a terrible pitcher and still win games with a great defense. But good pitching makes it all that much easier.

What about when the ball is hit in the stands so the defense doesn't even have to move ;)

If that happens too much, then it's not terrible pitching; that is horrible pitching.:r

Anytime they are talking about Homer Bailey in the starting rotation, it makes me cringe. He is awful :td

Re: Red's Fans Check in

I keep hearing that Bailey will mature and develop, but IMHO, if he hasn't yet matured and developed by now, then it's time to cut him loose. he could be a decent setup man to Chapman, but they're not ready to get rid of coCo. coCo needs to go if he can't successfully close this year (w/o giving all of us fans a heart attack or stroke each and every game).

I still like CoCo. Sure, he makes it stressful, but he was one of the best closers last year.
