Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
I think the Wings are still a threat, but there are 7 or 8 real threats in the West, so I get your point to some degree, Mike.
Should have gone with my original thought the other night, that the SCF would go to Game 6. |

Wings traded Brad Stuart to the Sharks for a unconditional pick in 2014

Devils are the first team since 1945 to go down 3-0 in the Finals and force a Game 6.

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index....seman_bra.html Wings also got Andrew Murray but like Stuart, he is to become a FA on 7/1. BTW Mike, I don't know why you like stirring the pot so much. IMO UFAs aren't going to be beating down the door in SJ. They finished two spots back of your least favorite team and likewise got bounced in the first round. So, I'm guessing history might play a part if deciding between the two. One team has a history of doing whatever it takes to win, within reason and with class for the most part. The other team has been used as a verb "going Shark" as a metaphor for choking in the playoffs. :tu |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
With the series getting a bit tighter, how is LA going to react? I admittedly haven't seen any games, so I can't say how things have looked. Is LA getting a bit tight/tentative, with NJ Seemingly getting things on track now?
|
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
I can't see LA not closing it out. Will be epic if they don't.
Mike look a few posts back I said the Sharks window is likely closed also. I also am very aware they repeatedly have wet the bed in the playoffs and talked about it. I said they would not escape the first round this year also. The core of the club doesn't have heart and they won't win till it changes. I am a hockey fan who lives in San Jose. I watch hockey regardless of who is playing. If the Sharks win great. If not I still love to watch. Flaming the Sharks does not bug me like flaming the Wings bugs you. ;) I think you place to much value on history. Players in all sports these days seem to play for money or a title. Can't remember in recent history a player going to a team based on the teams past history and not current potential. Again I'm saying if I am those two and want to win now I look two teams that are one player away. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
I understand. I'm more of a Wings fan than a NHL fan. Partially because I don't have time to follow the entire league. I agree that money and chances at a title are the biggest FA motivators. I disagree that the Wings window has closed. Many thought so when Yzerman retired; others when the cap era began. I think the Wings can go either way. With the right additions they'll be right in the mix, top 4 in the West. Without them, they'll struggle. However, history and potential for a title are intertwined often. Sure when you lose a long time superstar you often go into a lull. However, that can be avoided. I have faith in Holland that he can add the right pieces at the right price.
Off the top of my head the Wings have added Rafalski, Marian Hossa, and Ian White via FA since the cap era began. I'm sure they'll be able to fill some needs. Hopefully with some top level talent given what they're losing with Lidstrom's retirement. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Let me say I never said the Wings lack heart. I don't think that. I just see the Wings as a team needing more then two good players to make a serious run given what the last few years has seen. Parise and Suter both have to come and hope some more pieces can be added.
The Sharks have more depth but the core guys just seem to lack in heart. Look at Marleau this year. He should be ashamed of how little he tried in the playoffs. Gutless and no heart. He's far from the only guy. SJ is this place where it sells out almost everynight the weather is great and media pressure is barely a factor. The wrong type of players here seem to lose drive. I like the Stuart addition if he signs. I think he will. His family is here. They should have let marleau go. |

The Sharks definitely have talent. To be honest I was surprised they went from President's trophy to where you assess them at so quickly. As far as the Kings. I haven't watched, but a 3-0 collapse in the finals would be beyond epic. It would be historic, even crossing into other sports. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
I'll take that start! Bonus points for Trevor Lewis finding the back of the net!

That fan behind the Devils bench should have a t-shirt advertising her surgeon(in lieu of her Kings t every game) he did a fantastic job!

Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Amazing run. 8th place seed beats 1,2 and 3 in the West. 16-4. Wow.
Congrats to Dustin Brown, Jonathan Quick, Darryl Sutter and the L.A. Kins! :wnr Wonder what Philly's management thinks of their statement that they just felt they couldn't win a cup with Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. Thank goodness Simon Gagne didn't drop the Cup. |

Congrats to the Kings and their fans! I was pulling for them to win the series as there are only 2 or 3 teams in the West who I wouldn't have rooted for playing against the Devils, but also was rooting for the many Flyer connections in the organization.

Well if its money and family the wild will be making a big push. I know everyone is pointing to this alleged discussion that occurred when Parise and Suter were on the U.S. Olympic team in 2010, but I think there are plenty of other things which will factor in. I like his "no way" on playing for the rangers. Bet some of that is Torts. Got to imagine players not on the team look at that guy and think Fock that! |

sharks wont be players really but it will be interesting to see who goes where. Sharks will be getting a facelift. 7 UFAs are apparently going to be allowed to walk. Also no suprise Stuart is coming home. He has signed a 3 year deal. |

In WTF news the Wings sign Tootoo. A player with a history of discipline and substance abuse problems. Is he buddies with Suter?
Bertuzzi and Tootoo on the same team? |

Jiri Hudler took his 25 goals 25 assists and +10 rating to the Flames today. Hey Wings fans that can't be good. With Lindstrom gone, and Stuart and Hudler going to new teams I got to imagine Detroit will really offer a lot of money to try to bring in Parise and Suter. Radulov goes back to Russia. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Garrison to the Canucks....big offense from defense if he repeats his performance of last season.
Sabres get Steve Ott from Dallas for Roy, was hoping Ott might come to Chicago. Jokinen to the Jets....meh. Radulov back to the KHL is good news for the rest of the division. :2 |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Ott? Man such a instigator. Love when he gets pounded.
With Hudlers departure from the Wings I just cant see Parise going there. Talking heads brought up Semin as a possible Wings signing. Apparently he has burned his bridge. Funny how a top 4 +/- guy could do that. Now if they signed both Parise andgoing Semin they would immediately be a threat to win the cup with some D help. Could happen. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Avs extend Erik Johnson.
Hope the stars align and the Avs somehow snag Parise or Suter, who they admit to having talks with..... |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Strange they don't admit to having any talks with Semin, with their need for a LW.....

Holy crap. He turned down Detroits offer of 80 Mill so they offer him 90 For 13the years. I got to say to me this shows Detroit is no longer a place players are trying to get to. I got to imagine he will take the money. Its just too much. Multiple local honks hear are reporting the Sharks have made an offer for Rick Nash. The offer includes either or both Pavelski or Clowe |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Jagr to the Stars for 1 year at 4.5 million. Stars have been quite active, we'll see if it pushes them into the playoff picture.

Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Lol Suter and Parise both sign with the wild. Awesome for the Wild organization, but I really think they over paid. Still nice to see an organization with such a strong fan base reward its fans.
Mike I said it before. In todays NHL history means nothing and the Wings have been on a down turn for a few years. Players will not take less or close to the same for history. Detroit is no longer that desired location for players trying to win a cup. You were right about Suter and Parise wanting to play together. You were just wrong about them wanting to play for Detroit. Have a felling Detroit is going to over pay for some players much like White last year. Semin if he goes is going to get paid well. Lot of teams with room is going to drive his price up very high. Wings may have to trade for some D but obviously Zet aNd Dats are off table which doesnt leave much room. Wonder if Detroit is on Nash list. I know San Jose is. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Unreal. Bummed that one of the two didn't land on the Hawks, but excited to see how this will affect hockey in Minny. Congrats to our Wild fans!

Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
I am not really excited about the Sharks going after Nash. He strikes me as another Marleau who will just be happy to win in the regular season enjoy the weather but not a guy who will give everything in the playoffs. Who knows?

It's great news for Minnesota. This franchise tanked for most, if not all, of its existence and now there appears to be better days ahead (and perhaps for the next 13 years). With both goalies re-signed, they might be light on the backend, with only 6 Ds inked. They don't have any more cap space, so I guess they'll have to promote some youngsters. According to hockeysfuture.com, Brodin might be ready to make the jump, but I think he'd have to put on some muscle, because at about 170 lbs, he's a little light for the big leagues. |

As other teams in the running said, Minnesota offered something the other teams couldn't; returning home for Parise and Mrs. Suter. Not to mention Suter won't be far from his native Wisconsin. I would have like to see them in the winged wheel but I hardly think this is the NHL players sending a message that Detroit is no longer a desired destination in the NHL. |
Re: NHL '11 - '12 Thread
Haven't logged in for about 2 weeks. Figure I better add my :2 here, at least.
July 4th was a WONDERFUL day! Got home from a 40 mile trining ride to my wife telling me that Suter signed. I go to look on my phone and she tells me Parise signed, too. I was surprised, elated, and felt the hair raise on my arms. Signing them was HUGE for the franchise. It re-energized one of the most passionate fanbases in the NHL. When you can get 10,000 and more to show up for a high school championship game, you know your state has a love affair with hockey. As for the signings and the money, I think that most Wild fans are OK with it. You look at how the contracts are structured, and you see that they're very frontloaded, with HUGH signing bonuses due for the first 2 years. What that does is foce them to develop their youngsters, something that they were planning on doing, anyways. We (Wild fans) have known that they have a stockpile of talent coming up in the next couple years. Some of them include Granlund, Brodin, Bullmer, Zucker, Gustafson, Coyle, etc. I've read that they have 7 of the top 49 prospects in their system. The frontloaded deals allow them to bring those guys up and develop them as a team, and then have the flexibility to resign them to larger deals when their rookie contracts are up. The fanbase was excited about all these young guys even before signing Suter and Parise. They add instant depth, and make the Wild relevant in the league. Remember that they were leading the league in December last season when a rash of injuries derailed their season. They'll have a top front line that will be able to score with anyone in the league, and a solid second line. Their D may be a bit suspect, but even with a lack of depth back there last year, they were reasonably solid, so I'm not too worried about that. But this move wasn't about this next year or the year after. This was about the next 5-8 years, with both Suter and Parise being just 27. I see big things on the horizon for this team after these signings. I'm glad some friends of ours asked us to split their season tickets with them. :) The X will be rocking for the next few years, I hope. And as Parise is a Fighting Sioux, of course we had to go get jerseys on Thursday. He he. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7127/7...9ebc26_z_d.jpg |
