Re: Second Firearm Thread...
Savage 220, 20ga bolt action slug gun. I'm going to be hunting in a shotgun zone this year, with the potential of 150-200 yard shots. Everything I've read says the Savage is up to the task.

Re: Second Firearm Thread...
Also found a great deal on gunbroker for a Leupold Ultimateslam scope for it.

Slug guns are pretty wicked. I've always lived somewhere where we could use rifles or buckshot so I've never owned a real slug gun. I've used the old sabots or pumpkin balls a long time ago but I recall them being not very accurate compared to a rifled slug barrel. |
Re: Second Firearm Thread...
Yea, you can use any straight walled cartridge as long as it's 1.8 in case length or less. At least that's what I've been told.
Researching the Savage, lots of guys in MI have them and love it. Was at Cabela's today and got a couple different boxes of Hornady's for it. Wanted Remington Accutip, but no 20ga on the shelves. :( The line for gun sales was crazy. |
Re: Second Firearm Thread...
If any of yall are bass fishers, the Bass Pro sale going on right now is actually pretty great. I'm more of an online shopper but they had some great deals. Stocked up on Zoom plastics at 25% off, tons of hardbaits on markdown, and some great sales plus rebates on line.

Saw this the other day and thought it was quite interesting.
Glad I have that Glock 21 as my go to bedroom/home defense weapon of choice. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...e9e6fdfaac.jpg |

mass x velocity (squared) at entry - mass x velocity (squared) at exit. Hence a relatively small round from a high velocity rifle is devastating. In an operational area I treated deceptively small wounds from AK47 rounds that had caused devastating injuries. (There are of course 50 cal rounds that would pretty much take your head off.) Military rounds often don't have much "yaw" and "tumble", but a lower velocity round can be manipulated to do all kinds of gyrations based on bullet design. A 9mm can do a whole lot of hurt. Obviously where you strike your intended victim is also important, and I'm sure you LE guys could advise us, but the percentage shot in my book is two in the torso. I'm far less likely to miss! In a "domestic setting" with a handgun,- I guess you want to stop someone cold - so I suppose the biggest you can handle would be my rule of thumb. Personally I think a nice semi auto shotgun would settle most disputes. |
Re: Second Firearm Thread...
I am with Neil, shotguns for most applications :tu A good .223 is always a nice option also. I carry 9mm and .45 for handguns and a pocket .380, I figure any gun in hand is better than one in your car.

Re: Second Firearm Thread...
I'm seriously considering a pistol permit. I'm pretty sure an intruder isn't going to wait around for me to get and load my shotgun.

You could move to America and the you wouldn't need a permit to have a handgun. |

I think he was referring to New York's strict gun laws.

Re: Second Firearm Thread...
I am about to purchase a M&P Shield in .40. My everyday carry is a S&W E series 1911 which i love. I have had a Beretta Tomcat .32 for about 10 years that I carry in my pocket once in a while. I recently got my PI license and in Florida even if you have a Concealed License (which I do) you can't carry with that license when you are working on a case. You have to get a Florida G Statewide firearms license. And you have to qualify with whatever caliber you are going to carry. Did that with the 1911, and will now have to do it with the .40. The .32 isn't an allowed caliber to carry so I figured I would get something that was on the list that is smaller (than my 1911) and I could fit in a pocket in a pinch.
Anyone have any experience with the 9 and the 40 shield? I was a little concerned that the recoil in such a small framed pistol in .40 would be snappy. Talked to a guy that has one and he said it wasn't a big deal. I was able to get an awesome deal on one with my first responder discount. Looks like the pistol, and extra extended mag (for a total of three, it comes with two) shipped to my FFL and background check will be just a few dollars less than 400 bucks. |
Re: Second Firearm Thread...
I dont think the recoil in that frame will be a big deal to you since yu are used to the 1911. Should be pretty similar in my opinion.

Re: Second Firearm Thread...
I have the Shield 9mm, and have yet to shoot the .40, I have heard that they are not friendly, but who knows, can you shoot one before you buy?

I got my shield and my ccw about the same time. I picked the shield 9mm due to cheaper rounds and more carry capacity. It is a great gun and shoots like a laser. I chose it over the xps 45. |
Re: Second Firearm Thread...
Big 2A supporter here! Proud CPL holder.
My EDC pistol is a Glock 23. I carry it at 4:00 in a Crossbreed SuperTuck Deluxe. I typically have it loaded with either Federal Guard Dogs or Winchester PDX1. |

I was able to look at a compact M&P .40 today and although I really like it, I think the extra width will be contra-indicated for the way I want to carry it.

Re: Second Firearm Thread...
