From what I've been told, the Mayan calendar didn't have to include a leap year due to the way the months are divided. It's actually more precise than our current calendar.

That being said, my guess is the calendar ends when it does because the guy carving it was forced to stop by his wife. In fact I bet she told him something along the lines of, "It's not like the worlds gonna end just because you stopped carving. Now stop waisting so much time on that thing."

The Mayan calendar is a circle (full of circles) that doesn't end. It just starts a new cycle. The beginning and end of the cycles are about as important as our choosing January 1st as the year's beginning. 2012 is their Y2K.
I'm more worried about what happens in a little less than 8000 years when we have to add another digit to the year.
