I love Steinhart. A great value and they have beautiful styles. If somehow I could grow my wrist, I would be wearing this one right now. But at 44mm and 16mm thick, it would look pretty goofy on my small arm.

Is it an automatic? Looks like a classic pilots watch with a onion crown, kind of like a Big Pilot chrono. 47 mm is huge!

Like IWC's Big Pilot Chrono, the Steinhart Nav B-Chrono is based on the B-UHREN watches that 5 companies, including IWC, produced for Luffwaffe bomber pilots and navigators before and during WWII. Steinhart also makes a line of pure pilot watches that much more closely resemble the B-Uhren's. The diamond crown on the watch I ordered is actually historically accurate, the onion/pumpkin crown is a more uniform/round shape and is a modern addition to the pilot watch.

All of Steinhart watches are mechanical, some manual wind and some automatic. The one I've ordered is a mech auto chrono using the Valjoux 7750 movement. 47mm is on the larger side depending on your wrist size, but it's the 16.7mm height that's the large dimension on this watch. I have a 19.5cm wrist and find that anything under about 42mm looks lost on my arm. While obviously not my arm, this person is wearing the 47mm on a slightly smaller 19cm wrist:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachm...73_resized.jpg

Depending on how this purchase goes, and I have no doubts that the watch quality will be just as good as the watch forums say it is, I've got a feeling I'll be ordering this marine chronometer inspired manual wind as a dress watch. Hard to go wrong for 383Euro shipped.

47mm is large, no matter how you cut it, but it's whether it looks foolish or not is the question. You have the wrist to carry it off. It would look out of place on me.

Looking at their site, I can't figure out where they are manufactured. It says Switzerland, but I can't find the factory address beyond just Jura. That's a well priced watch considering the movement alone may cost them $150-200 unfinished.

mithrilG60 08-16-2012 11:29 AM

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?

Ya I'm not sure where exactly in Jura their factory is. They're also a small company so I would expect they contract to factory(s) which makes the pieces per design spec then ship them back to the small workshop in Augsburg, DE where Steinhart is based out of for final customizing/finishing and shipping.

Although growing quickly, Steinhart is still definitely a cult/boutique brand that doesn't have the presence or size that many of the other well established brands do. That comes with some perks though as the owner has also collaborated on several occasions with various watch enthusiast forums to create customized special editions for their members.

Laco makes some beautiful pilots too, closer to historically accurate than the Steinharts as well. I looked at Laco's but just couldn't justify spending 1600€ on a watch right now. You do get what you pay for and the Laco's are better quality again, but it is what it is. As it stands my Steinhart will cost almost the same as my Aristocrat did last year. Thank god my wife doesn't blink at these things... her exact comment was "Would you stop obsessing and just order the damn watch already!!". The one thing she did have me change was to requested the satin/brushed finish buckles instead of the polished :r

Hoping to get a FedEx number on Monday and if all goes well I should have it sometime mid to late next week :noon

Shane everything on shop NBC is on flex pay so you're looking at $40 a month x 6 months. Just saying

That 3 watch set's a good deal but I'd only wear one cuz i dont like the gold or rose gold color so that'd be a waste

Well, I ended up getting my girlfriend something less fancy than I had intended.

This Steinhart kind of fell in my lap and I thought she'd like the size (37 mm) and colors. It's automatic with a deployment buckle and a "case protector" that comes off.

I want a good automatic skeleton watch and it has to be large. I love my Invicta watches but want to try some others out. Probably won't pick anything up until Christmas but I always look. They opened a Home Goods/T.J. Maxx by my house and they have a fantastic watch section with really good prices.

I'm a big fan of my Grand Diver Auto and I really want a Subaqua Noma. Some of the Android line of watches are nice too.

I have the Grand Diver in the strap, wouldnt mind one in a SS bracelet.

Everyday wear is an $80 Timex. The ONLY cool thing about this watch is the orange face. I own a Submariner that I bought in 1982-it's been with me thru thick And thin. It's promised to my son when he graduates next May, so I don't wear it much anymore. I'm looking for a diver style watch with an orange face. I've been looking at the Seiko Orange Monster. Does anyone know of a better alternative in the same general price range? Thank you.

They make a Mini-monster (or Neo as in new), of which I own, for a reasonable price. Still has the orange face, just not rated to as much depth.
