one other quick question... a buddy of mine just got a few makers mark cigars.. and a few others that were sealed in tubes. someone was telling me that they did not need to be in a humidor. is this true?

From everything that I've read and learned in here, you should still put them in a humidor. The tubes are good short tern storage, but they are not "weather" proof. So if you were thinking about smoking it very soon, I would think that it would be fine, more than a week + i'd throw it in the humidor.

hey everyone. I'm pretty new to the cigar scene, have tried a few and seem to like the real mild flavored ones. My current favorites are Cao Bella's Caramel flavored. Any suggestions for me to try?

Also, I know not to inhale, but my throat hurts alot when I smoke. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?!?

Thanks! <3

Is it just me or are the Perdomo Lot 23 Maduros a very light maduro wrapper? They seem only a slight shade darker compared to the natural wrapper.

Some mfg. die the wrappers so they get that dark black color, some will stain your fingers and lips.

My experience with flavored and infused cigars is limited so all I can recommend is the JAVA by Drew Estates and maybe the Tabak Especial Negras, also by Drew Estates. The Tabak is a fuller bodied cigar though.

To get more suggestions for flavored cigars, you're probably going to need greater exposure for your question than this thread will get. Your best bet is to search reviews or general cigar discussion for terms like "flavored cigars", "ACIDs", "infused" etc. Or post a new thread with your question in general cigar discussion.

As for the throat, you're probably not doing anything wrong, if you are a new smoker, it takes a little while for your body to get used to the smoke.

Maduro, as the term is applied in the cigar description, means a more heavily fermented wrapper and not a specific shade. Some leaves/crops/batches will be darker, some will be lighter.

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

How long should I let my new cigars rest before I can smoke them? I received two boxes in the mail today. I live in Texas so when I opened the UPS box I found the cigar boxes were very warm. They have been sitting in the coolidor for about 4 hours now.

To the question above: Some maduro wrappers, typically in cheaper maduro cigars, are dyed or altered to appear darker than they actually are, like Mike said. In my personal opinion the Lot 23 Maduros are naturally maduro and they do not try to dye them to make them appear darker. Just my two cents though.

My Preference Is To Rest Them In My Cooler Or Humidor At Least 1 Month, But I'm OCD!:)

You Could Always Try "1" Right Now, But I Would Wait At "Least" A Week To Get The Sticks To The RH Of Your Humi. They Were Probably Shipped Very "Wet". :2

If I wanted to smoke the cigar that badly, and I had two boxes of them, I would have lit one up already. It's probably fine and I mean, what's the worst that can happen? It tastes a little bit off? Eh, big deal...

Greg is wise.
I usually wait two weeks but a week minimum is a good rule of thumb. Gives the sticks time to acclimate to YOUR storage conditions.

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

Nah I think the rule of threes is 3 girls, 3 cigars, 3 nights.

But you smoke the cigars, don't give them to the girls.

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

Okay this might be a newbie question but in all of my years of cigar smoking I have always wondered this and never saw a clear answer.

When saying what kind of cigar it is what order do you say the size and wrapper?

For example: Is it a Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Maduro Toro, or is it Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Toro Maduro?

Sherlockholms 07-03-2011 03:21 PM

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Toro Maduro
I have always seen the wrapper put at the end.

One country? That is a bit limiting don't you think? You must be a man afraid of variety.

No Tom just chose the best country :D

There's a lot of variety in every country, once you find the one you like....why bother looking for more if you've tried a bit of everything.

Think about all the cigars produced....THOUSANDS. How could you ever get bored?

Different years taste different.....aging them....the possibilities are endless.

I think what it comes down to is. The manufactures can word it anyway they like.

And no one really seems to care or even take note. Probably most of us didn't even notice.

I have tried them all, and made an educated decision, Sherlock. Why smoke the rest when you can smoke the best (for me)?

And as Bill said, there is vast variety amongst smokes of one country...think Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic. Would you be afraid of variety if you only smoked cigars from one of those countries? Hell, Gurkha alone makes 27,381 varieties of cigars.

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

If my last two cigar wrappers have split a little, more like a small crack in the wrapper, while smoking does this mean my humidor has too high a RH or too low?

Much depends on the cigar and wrapper. Some Cameroon wrappers such as Fuente's can be very thin and susceptible to occasional splits. Others such as the old Padilla Achilles had very thin wrappers as well. If its just a small split then most likely not an Rh problem. :2

Tyler 07-04-2011 11:13 PM

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

They have just been very small splits. One was a Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne Figurado, the other was a Perdomo 10th Anniversary Maduro Epicure.

Re: Beginner Questions (Ask Them Here!)

yet another newbie question from me!!

after messing with a small traveldor for a while i decided it wasn't really as large as i'd like... especially with the great abundance of sticks that bob sent me, even though my friends and i smoked a lot of them, had a sentimental value worthy of some aging :). anyhow, i invested in a slightly larger humidor (50ct) and with it got a 84% boveda pack, i left the pack in the humidor from about 13 days and 12 hours, too anxious to finish up the last 12 hours! well, i ended up tranferring my cigars to the new humidor and put my 65% BP in with them. they were fairly dry when i put them in and they've been in for a while now but some reason the 65% just wont seem to get them very humid, most remain dry to the touch and when i test by squeezing them softly they dont seem maliable at all.

would i be safe to insert my 84% BP again to get the cigars more humid? and how long would be acceptable before overhumidifying my sticks?

thanks again for all of you're assistance :)

All personal preference Micah. I would put a hydro in there that's calibrated and see what the reading is. The packs usually are low :2

I tried my first Opus X this weekend, it was amazing at first but then it killed me.
I hadn't eaten much that day, is that why I almost died or is the Opus X that strong?

Also what should I try next? I found a small B&M in Allentown PA that has a little lounge area (Where I grabbed the Opus X) and saw they have the 601 Blue and RP Vintage. Overall they had a real nice selection. I am thinking I'll try the 601 Blue next time.

I gotta admit it was a humbling experience!
I've seen you guys all talk about the 601s so I figure I will give it a shot next time.
I paid $17 bucks for the Opus X, seemed really high to me but I really wanted it.
Afterward I searched online and didn't really find anything cheaper.
Is $17 average for an Opus X or is that just a rediculous amount to spend?
