Start there, for it's price point it doesn't get much better.

Personally, I don't think there is any better advise than this!!!!

This doesn't mean to stop here, and I surely haven't. But, it's a darn good starting point!

I picked up a couple bottles of Rittenhouse Rye, bottled in bond, 100 proof. Never had it, but for $25 each, can't be all that bad. Gonna have some tonight with some cigars and meatball subs :banger

It's very solid and fairly similar in flavor to Wild Turkey rye. They're about the same price and, by a couple of points, I'd give the edge to the bird.

Never knew that WT made a rye. Will look for that next time I'm at the store. Thanks for the tip.

Might be comparing apples to oranges, but have you had any of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection ryes? If so, how do they compare?

Do. It's probably my favorite rye in price/performance terms. :tu

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Well, had about a 1/3 of a bottle of the Rittenhouse last night. It was a little rough right out of the bottle, so I put a little water in and it mellowed nicely. Don't like it as much as the Bulleit rye, which is the same $$$ and available here, but it's not bad, for a change of pace.

This is a decent bourbon for a very reasonable price. A good choice that should satisfy without breaking your wallet. I've had better (for my taste buds), but at twice the price. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the Rare Eagle, cause I did.

Enjoy!

It's not bad. For the price Woodford is better. For a bit more I like Noahs Mill.

I've drank 2 bottles of it, don't find myself wanting a third anytime soon though.

It's a lighter bourbon than most others but that is not meant as a criticism - more a stylistic descriptor. Still bolder than wheaters like Maker's Mark or Weller. Not a bourbon that has most enthusiasts raving about it but it's what you think that counts.

Is that the stuff in the little bottle? If so, yes. It was good but I don't think it was worth the money.

Thanks for the feedback. (The bottle I saw was 750ml, though I believe the store owner referenced a 375ml bottle as well.) I am fond of the "standard" BT, but the single oak project bottle I saw was nearly 3 times its cost ... so I've not bitten the bullet yet.

Thanks, Peter! Very, very affordable!!! It'd be nice to find another good sippin' quality bourbon for less than $60!!!!! Few and far between. I've never seen it in Alabama, which means it's not on the state's "approved" list. But I'll be in Tennessee on and off over the next three months, and there are several excellent stores within a couple of miles, so may be able to find it there!!

I was looking at the 18 year Saturday night, but Zaya caught my eyes instead. Kind of on a rum kick lately.

I'm sure I'll get back into bourbon. Set aside a few hundred $$$ for the 2012 WLW, Stagg and Pappy.

It was my understanding that Buffalo Trace not only used differs seasoning and charing techniques, but the also used different mash bills for the whiskey that filled the barrels. The idea was that no two barrels would be alike. I was also under the impression they were only released in 375ml bottles. If you saw a 750ml bottle I would grab it, because it must be very rare. I haven't tasted them myself so I can't speak from experience but that is what I have read. You can go to the Buffalo Trace web site to get the pedigree on each barrel, but you have to do a review of the bottle you are requesting, so I haven't gone that far yet. I hope that helps.

Matt-N-GA pointed out to me that the WL Weller Special Reserve had be marked down to $9.99 a quite a few of our local stores, as a marketing ploy to gain interest. Well it worked for me, I had never tried it but this stuff is really good.
