This is actually with just a few minutes to play.... The game was already chippy and he is being VERY vocal about keeping their cool, that he doesn't want something stupid to happen that could cost them games in the State Tournament. http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/1-5.jpg Who doesn't love celebrating.... http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/6-3.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/30-2.jpg More celebrating... http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/50-2.jpg |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Is there any wonder why he leads the team in PIM.... WTF???? I sent this to him as a visual learning lesson. These pics are taken about 30 seconds apart....
YOU DO THIS...... http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/25.jpg YOU END UP HERE........ http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/26.jpg He's 3rd on the team in scoring, so he's not just gooning it up....but sometimes I shake my head.....:sh |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Love the pics of Abbs. Thats so awesome. I have some of micah when he was 5 with first year squirts. Crazy size difference.
The flu is ripping through our house and the boy is falling. The West Coast NARCH Winter Nationals are this weekend. Teams from Hawaii and So Cal are coming. At this point I hope he will be able to play in a game by Sunday or Monday. He is already getting sad he may miss this. Horrible timing. They are supposed to go to LA in the spring and summer for thr jr olympics, but this is a big one. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
As for the penalties, dont know what to say.
My kid has been glossed the little $hit and last weekend was told to go after a kid who kept jabbing at the goalie after he froze the puck. He apparently got his pound of flesh from the kid and it stopped. . I was told none of the second years were able to handle the job so the first year took care of it. The coaches were talking about how he hip checked a kid on the boards perfectly. He took a penalty but I guess the were so proud no one cared. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
How's the West Coast NARCH Winter Nationals going, Mike? PICS?!?!?!
Here are a few from this weeks tourney.... After a diappointing start, we beat the Capital Thunder(Sacramento) to get to the Championship. LM had a goal and an assist in the Semi Final game..... Here are a few pics from said game... Let's play! http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/15-1.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/20-1.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/25-1.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i397/EJB21/30-3.jpg |

His assist... Monster slap shot from the point that was deflected at the net.

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
UNBELIEVEABLE!!! Just got this in the mail(see below)........WTF!!! Just beat a team in the semi final and they are advancing.... How do you come through pool play, play a 2 vs 3, assuming you'll play the 1 vs 4. Win and then play the loser of the 1 vs 4....(the 4).... Wish I could ***** about a phucking trainwreck of a tournament, but it's ours.... UNBELIEVEABLE.....PHUCK.:r:(:fl:pu
Here's the deal. The way the rules read, it states the two teams with the most points advance. And the schedule doesn't say Semi Finals. Bummer deal but we did what we had to do and beat them. They can cry all the way home after Ogden puts a beat down on them. All we can do is go out like we played today and kick the crap out of Greenwood. All in all be proud of how we played today and bring it tomorrow!! |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Had a somewhat similar weekend.
The boys went 4-1 on the weekend. They took third in runner up game. They lost to the tournament winner 8-6. Dont want to blame the goalie but he got yanked because he couldnt make a save and let in the first 5 shots he faced. Soft soft goals. Sucks because the one lost saturday knocked them out because the champs and another team tied. If we had played the other team we would have won and got to the championship. Just didnt work out. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...121_151631.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...121_152430.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...121_152444.jpg |

Right on, those were some good ones! My kids teams' best player, and coaches son broke his kneecap last week, he's done for the year. He was also supposed to be immobile until his surgery so the coach had to stay home last weekend while the team played in Pittsburgh. So the assistant took over and asked me and another dad to work the bench with him. It was the best time I've EVER had at one of my kids games. Talking to the boys during the game, giving advice, yelling at the refs and actually getting a response! I'm not sure if I'll get to help again, that situation was pretty unique, but man I'll never forget it. |

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
So the Little One's game was a little more physical than a parent or coach would like today.... I mentioned to the ref a few times that he needed to get control of the game and start using his whistle a bit, with absolutely zero results.... I mentioned to our kids, play a clean game. Play the puck not the body ect....
Anyway, close to the end, she got knocked off the puck in what looked to be an almost unintentional check from a kid that just had a hard time stopping himself as he ran into her. He actually got the worst of it by far..... But it set her off..... She got up, skated in a small circle, lined a kid up who now had the puck and was bringing it through the neutral zone. She put on the burners, from about 30' away with a great angle & CRUSHED the kid. Just annihilated him. It was as good of open ice check as I have seen in a bit.....but totally illegal in the fact that it is Mites(no checking) and totally uncalled for. I screamed out her name and then told the ref, BLOW THE WHISTLE....CALL THAT! Which he didn't.... I could hear parents in the stands yelling....it was crazy.... I pulled her and skated out and talked with the ref AGAIN, saying that he had let the game get out of control and someone was going to get hurt. He looked me right in the eye and said "I know." WTF??? I made it clear that we were as much at fault as the other team, but that he needs to blow his whistle.....UGH! I really don't know what else I could have done....the whole game.... I felt bad, the Little One started crying and told me that it wasn't fair, she was getting checked and then gets in trouble....bla..bla...bla... Stuff like that is tough for a coach.... All that said.....and now that the game is done and nobody was hurt.... WOW, WHAT A HIT..... |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Oh....and conservative estimate, she had 8-10 goals...

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Nothing wrong with some body contact. Its hockey after all. Cant say much my kids the toll collector on the boards for his team. Everyone pays. He loves rubbing kids out and is already a student of the hip check. Hes familiar with the sin bin. Usually the refs warn him a few times then he gets the hook.
My gripe is that the powers on high have now deemed no full ice for mites. Thankfully his inhouse program still does 1/2 full ice games and 1/2 Xice. Next year though I will have to move him up a year early so he will play full ice in inhouse. Nor Cal Hockey which oversees doesnt really sanction mite travel teams has now decide that mite club kids cant play any full ice games. So they arent acknowledging our existence really, but wont let us play full ice games unless its a tournament. We are left playing 1/2 or 3/4 games with no offsides or icing and the kids are confused. Look I understand xice is supposed to give more kids touches, but if you ever watch you will see the good kids still end up with the puck all the time. Kids that arent good just end up as cones to skate arond. The worse thing is now you will have kids who are squirts who have played up to 4 years of xice now being thrown on a full sheet of ice and introduced to offsides, icing, in game line changes etc. NC hockey has also basically banned kids playing up in travel so he will have to play inhouse squirts next year and travel mite. Then the travel teams are likely going to have to sneak around to do full ice games occasionally. |

How did the kid break his knee. Im always trying to explain to my kid to stop screwing around with soccer at school. I keep telling him if he gets hurt hes hurting himself and his team and was5ing mom and dads money. He actually got a one month ban from soccer at recess a while back. Apparently he thought it was hockey. |

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Nice shots!
Are 1 & 2 a sequence, looks like he crossed that tall kid(girl?) and she/he lost an edge and went sliding away harmlessly….. The boy starts HS playoffs tomorrow night. First game is single elimination, the winners go to a double elimination bracket…. For some reason I’m anxious as hell…. The team they are playing, they crushed early in the season, but seem to be on a bit of a run as of late. Hate to catch a hot team this time of year. Then, we are traveling to a tournament in Idaho this weekend, outdoor rink…. Should be interesting. Supposed to be a fun time for the kids. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Not sure. The guy said yeah, but boards are not matching. I dont know if he moved while taking photos. He dangled that girl? A bunch. She was 9 from what we heard.
They got stomped by his team from last year. He scored the only goal skating through the team looked like he did a pull through in the process |

Turns out it was a torn ligament. They thought at first there was a bone chip or spur by the knee cap, but further xrays showed it was the ligament. He had surgery last week and it went well, but he is off the ice for quite a while He took a hit mid-ice and just twisted with the upper body hit, his legs stayed right where they were, I think that's where the tear occured. He went down on his knee right after that, and favored it while trying to get back up, that's why everyone thought it was the knee.. |

8 Teams left and I think there are 2 frontrunners(not us) and 3 other teams with an outside shot(we're in there)...... We're going to have to have FAR BETTER play between the pipes, than we had last night, to get to the Final 4. We play the team that I posted about on Jan. 10th. Beat them 9-3 a month ago(they are better than that) and I am worried as could be... Couldn't stop a beach ball last night.... |

Had a great time in Salmon, Idaho this past weekend.

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
They had a skills competition at noon yesterday for the 5 teams. The LM entered the hardest shot and sniper competitions. He was competitive in the hardest shot, though didn't win(73MPH)....another kid on our team did win it with 76MPH.
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0cfa3e48.jpg He did win the sniper competition. Hit 4 or 5 in the prelim(missed center) and then 4-5 in the final to win it(missed top right). He was pretty stoked.... He had some teammates there for support. http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1ae25b5b.jpg Hanging out with some of the other kids during the skills thing. He also was a shooter in the goalie competition. Which he may have thought was the most fun of it all.... http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42c45e00.jpg |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Bad ass photos. Would love for M to experience something like that.

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Good guys win! We were the lower seed, 4 vs 5 game, and move on with a 7-4 win. Play the #1 next week....

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Nice. Congrats
Lol just noticed all the iced out cages on the travel kids. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Into the meat grinder tonight.... Playing the undefeated #1 seed. They have outscored their opponents this year, 130 to 13....:r
If we can get good play between the pipes and the lower end 2nd-3rd line players step up, we'll be right there. But that is asking a lot.... All that said, there is a reason they actually play the games, no game was won or lost on paper..... GO SPARTANS!!!! |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
After taking a 2-1 lead, now down 3-4 after two.... 15 minutes to go!!!

Oldest girl idolizes big brother. Now they do judo and hockey together. They have a free roller class right after his travel team practice. She wants to do ice, but I told her just like brother she has to do roller first for a while. Cool thing was didnt have to spend a penny on new gear as we just reused brothers. |

Switched over to reeboks. Seems happy said felt great. Skated a little off, but I guess thats to be expected. Hockeygiant opening in san jose on the 16th. Wooooot. They were taking some on ice pics in case you are wondering why in full uniform for pracy |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Spring summer time hockey.
No one close outside of the a $$hole coach he refuses to play for has a mite summer team. We now have to try to get him a redshirt on either the summerhawks (blackhawks summer team) squirt team or the Seals (jr sharks summer team) squirt team. Talked to Curtis Brown who runs the seals. Said he may let him redshirt after roster established. No idea on summerhawks. Not sure if he will play competitive roller next year. Something has to give between travel ice, inhouse ice, travel roller and judo. He likes roller because the coaches and kids, but doesn't like playing roller that much. He wants to do baseball now that Hawks is ending. Uuuuuuugh |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Yep, things winding down here and starting to look at what we are going to do this Summer. Sure it will end up a lot like last year.... High School Summer League for the LM, 3-3 for the Little One, which generally is locked up in soccer, which is going to ramp up(not that she isn't already playing on 2 indoor teams right now)....
Did he play baseball last year, cannot remember? |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Had the last practice of the season for the Lady Lightning, last night. Last practice for the house league tomorrow night(parents vs kids game).....then final game on Saturday. The older one is done with Jr. Grizzlies and HS.... WOW....I said winding down above, but for some reason thought we had a little more time.... Nope, season is done at this house Saturday around 3:00......

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Nice. We didnt do that this year.
My thighs are burning though. The little man has picked up a weird habit of not getting low anymore and his stride has shortened and he is losing speed. I think its a roller hockey thing. The roller hockey court is shorter and narrower so they dont need to have as much speed as they need to be quick. Short quick strides often work better. Spent time in the garage and driveway using roller blades funny enough going over stride mechanics. Work in progress, but I he did see that getting low allowed for fewer longer strides which generated more speed. His coach also told me he needs to start shooting from further out to take advantage of his hard shot. He loves to dangle (toe drag junkie), deeke and get in close on the goalie. Coach was saying while its easy now its going to get harder to do in the coming years so......... Lastly need to start introducing some light cardio with him. Abby plays soccer so you dont have the issue, but he gets gased at times. So yeah fun spring and summer for me. He played his last travel game of season and of course wouldnt have been complete without a beautiful shoulder check that sent the other kid horizontal into the boards. It really was pretty. The other kif had a wtf just happened look on his face. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Little Man is at State Camp, went up and watched for an hour today. Some great players there, he's getting a workout... Interested to see what the evaluation says...

Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Wow... Was looking at who this kid is, who I thought was the best kid on the ice, turns out he is a local kid who'd be playing for our HS if he wasn't billeting in Colorado to play. Looks like he's trying to get on(goal, he's 15) the USA U17 National team(think it's U17??).
Long story short.... Kid is GOOD and he's a Murray kid and I'd never even heard of him because he left the State for better competition. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Yeah scary when you see how good some kids are. Was like when we went down to LA for ice or when our inline team played the LA inline team. In fairness to the boys our inline goalie is not much and had his worse game ever. We likely could have beat the LA team with a decent goalie. Just puts everything in perspective. This weekend we played another Nor Cal inline event and mercy ruled all 5 teams very quickly.
Atleast he got the exposure and saw what he needs to shoot for. Travel and inhouse ice are now over. Only thing that remains is roller. Looks like we got hooked up and gor on a ice power skating clinic list. They are letting us do the mite one, but also got on the list for the travel squirt skate. Trying to weasel a red shirt on a squirt summer team, but not likely unless someone does us a favor. Fair amount of ice for the spring and summer, just trying to figure out best bang for buck. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Changed my mind and put the Little One in the Grizzly Spring Ice, instead of house 3-3, for her Summer ice time. It will be a big jump, as they don't do Mite, only Squirt and it will be full of travel kids....but will challenge her, which may be a good thing.... Guess we will see how she responds. Surprisingly, it is actually cheaper & more ice time.....go figure.
Oh, and the kid I mentioned above is a '96. I assumed he was 15, as he's in a grade lower than the Little Man, but when I looked at the selection stuff, he's a just a young(November) '96. |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Well spring plans are set.
Little man tried out for hawks summer squirt team and made it. In fairness they had a big turnout and were able to form 2 teams. As a first year mite I dont think he had enough juice to make the 1st team but he did look really really good. Carried the puck multiple times in scrim, deeked some kids, had some nice shots on net. Got some compliments from coaches about him. Supposed to play a tourney in L.A. end of next month. Whats awesome is he also has a roller tourney down there that weekend. Could get 2 for 1 This week and next we are doing a power skating clinic. Never been a fan of private lessons, but after talking to a few people I think clinics are often a waste. So many kids on the ice tbat instructor's cant really tweek things |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Congrats to Micah!
We got bad news yesterday.... HS coach and 2 assistants, all resigned. HC had been doing it for 10 years, more or less a volunteer position and I think with all the time and energy, he just decided it was time. One assistant was his brother, other was a kid he coached on the team years ago. LM was really bummed....broke down even talking about it....:( |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
That sucks. Imagine vwey tough as will have to learn a new coach.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...y/IMG_3220.jpg Two of the best 05s in the area. Very competitive relationship between these 2. M is in yellow. New used skates. Got them off ebay for half price. Reebok 18ks $330 brand new got for about 150 Wedges installed. Loves the fit. Says most comfortable skate ever http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...412_124528.jpg |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Nice win, on the skates...
Love his position on that pic! Balance/center of gravity is awesome! |
Re: Being a Hockey Parent
Apparently the Little Man was awarded the best defenseman award(team) at the Jr. Grizzlies awards banquet(we had other plans). AWESOME!!! Not sure what that is(what they give him), but the coach is going to bring it by Sunday. (they just contacted him)
