That is many a person's dream car. Never been in one, have you?

I know someone who dad has an original Shelby Cobra. He bought it in the early 70's as a wreck and had pieces of buried in his yard! He was affraid someone would steal the car before he could restore it. I saw him once washing off piece from the car and asked if that is from a Cobra. I thought he was going to skin me alive.

I saw one at Cars & Coffee in Cary, NC, two weeks ago - Waverly Place Shopping Center first Saturday of the month, 8:00am to 10:30am. Owner said it was an original 427 - I did not ask to record the serial number; he seemed honest. :D It was a gem from every angle. pm if you want all the pictures. I had a serious rumble factor.

Here's my purchase from earlier this year.

Not sure if I had ever posted my car, but here's my toy... Lotus Evora. It's a manual and mostly an every day driver for most of the year. This car has very precise handling traits and is really connected to both the road and driver. No cup holders here!

To Lotus fans, nothing handles like a Lotus. As much as I get new-car-idus as much as the next motorhead, I can't think of another sports car under 100K I'd rather have. Plus, this one is all sorted out now.

I am think today is going to be the end of the season. Plan on washing it later and connecting the CTEK.

It's a '76 280Z. Previous owner did a lot of work on it, and kept it in really good shape. There's no rust (fingers crossed it stays that way). Looks like it was undercoated at some point. All rubber body mounts replaced with urethane bushings. New springs/shocks put on to lower the car about 1-1.5". Paint is not original, but in pretty good shape. I plan to get a respray in a couple years. Engine is all stock and still runs strong for 40 years and 113k miles. It is an automatic trans, 3 speed. While I'd prefer a manual, the auto isn't all that bad. I have a 4 speed trans in the garage I may swap in at some point.

My first car was a 78 280. I had said at some point I'd get another one. So glad I did. It's a visceral feeling driving it.

Nice cars guys!

Looks like tomorrow will be the cutoff here as well - to stop pretending it's spring, and say goodbye to the car for a few months.

Re: Sports Cars, Muscle Cars and Customs!

Would be cool to make it a resto-rod style Z. Keep all the styling but put a miata engine trans in it. Would have slick 5 speed and good engine maintaining light weight.

I've gone back/forth about putting a LS1 in it. Lots of guys have done it, mated to a Tremec 5 or 6 speed. Talk about bad a$$. Only affects the weight by around 40lbs towards the front, as the original straight 6 is quite heavy. I've also thought about having the motor gone over to freshen it up. Maybe a mild cam swap too. All depends on how adventurous I want to get, plus how deep my pocket book is at the time.

It's a 2016 Lambo Huracan - LP610-4 in Midas yellow. I decided I didn't want to be the really old guy driving one so I got it now. Incredible experience to drive. Really got hooked after driving an aventador in LV and then a 458 Speciale in Germany for two days. Found a guy here in VB who has a Gallardo Superleggra in the same yellow at a local cars and coffee event.

Oh forgot the details. 2015 Charger Scat Pack. The lesser known car. Same engine as the SRT 392. No adjustable suspension and a few less options in the driving modes. Smaller brakes and tires too but I don't track the car and I drive like granny. But I think it was 7K less and cheaper to insure.

Re: Sports Cars, Muscle Cars and Customs!

Going to start a build on a '67 Impala SS convertible. Not me - paying for it, I don't know what the hell's going on under the hood. I just like the old stuff mostly mid-60's.

Debating on the engine? Rebuild the 327 or put in a period correct 427? That should add $5 + K to the value of the car. I'm not going to resto-mod it too much aside from brakes and suspension - I want it to look stock. I'm thinking save the 327 and put it on a stand and buy a modern Chevy crate motor. If I ever get rid of the car I'll let the old 327 go with it

68TriShield 01-16-2016 08:51 AM

Re: Sports Cars, Muscle Cars and Customs!

If the 327 is original to the car, that's the way to go to retain the value. If you want the 427, save the original engine.

No kidding. That car is hot. I exported a 996 Turbo S (coupe) to Switzerland like 6-7 years ago. That car was wicked fast; can only imagine what yours is like on the open road.

I have not tracked the Lotus yet. I have wanted to but just haven't had the time. I know a few that track Evora's almost every weekend. They are robust cars for for going to on off track.

Is your car PDK or manual?

mmblz 01-18-2016 09:49 PM

Re: Sports Cars, Muscle Cars and Customs!

It's a PDK. No more manual in 2016 turbos. I know they dropped manual recently but not sure if it was this year. Traded in the M and miss it for about half a second, but can't complain as this is about twice as fast. Finding time will definitely be the issue for me as well as far as track goes...

My friend had a '14 Cayman S with PDK and traded it on '15 997 base with manual. The PDK is neat, but I am still wanting to row my own. I like how the Porsche you can go up or down on either side of the wheel and the two gear kick down. Along with the more mechanical feeling when the PDK engages vs. a conventional slush box auto...

I just can't warm up to owning an automatic for a sports car still. I traded in the XK because it was an automatic and passed sweetheart deal on an IPS new Evora. That could change. When my S2000 lease ended years ago, I went right for the automatic sedan...

If you are ever in Natick, check out European Performance Engineering on Rt 135. They are Porsche specialty shop. I was in there about a month ago and they were rebuilding a 959 engine! How many times does one ever even see a 959, never mind with the engine besides it.

I had it for a year and a half but wanted something in the 3 sec 0-60 range with a duel clutch. The exhaust sound on the mazzi was pretty insane though and you can get one for under 83K now with few miles.

I'm a car whore.

Some rides past and present

1967 Camaro
1978 Landcruiser FJ40
997 911 C2S (gone)
997 911 C4S (gone)
2010 V8 BMW M3 drop top (gone)
2009 BMW X5 V8 (gone)
2010 Cadillaic Escallade (gone)
2014 Lexus LX570
2012 Audi A6 (gone)
2013 Audi S4 EPL Stage II

There's been lots more and I almost did the Lamborghini thing too, but for some reason didn't. I'm an idiot I've spent more on cars in my life than most spend on houses. I'm trying now to be grown up about it, but it is very hard to do.

My favorite and the one I regret letting go was the C4S. It was a manual and I drove it every day. There is no better daily driver on earth (at least for me). I miss it every day.

996 GT3, absolutely love it. Previously had a 1995 RX-7 which was awesome, but always worried about something going wrong. GT3 has a very familiar feel as the FD without worrying about the engine blowing.

On the flip side is the raptor that gets abused as often as I can go. Say what you want about Ford, that thing has been through hell and back with very few issues. 75' jumps are not what it was engineered for...
