Yeah, like rubber washers/grommets/straps. The more vibration you can keep off of your walls, the quieter it will be. I hung my fan (its ducted so the setup is a bit different from yours) from the rafters with rope, and rubber exhaust hangers, its super quiet.

A dimmer would be awesome, just make sure you use a fan dimmer. A light dimmer would burn up.

Good luck!

If you want some ideas about how to trim the inside, I used a plastic grate which is made for the inside of fluorescent lights. It lets through lots of air, but does a good job of hiding whats behind it.

Got the door and window framed in:

And then added in a shelf to display all my homebrew bottles:

Are those heat lamps on the outside of your fan or just lights?

Clicking the below image will take you to a video that provides a nice compare/contrast to what the room looked like before the window and door framing, as well as the shelf.

Just lights, no need for heat lamps here!

I'm going to put in a laminate floor....get something that looks ok but won't absorb too much of the smoke. I was initially just gonna put carpet down, but the more I thought about it I realized I would be replacing carpet in the room on a bi-yearly basis to get rid of the smell.

Once I settle on the flooring choice, as far as color, I will be staining the shelf in the same color.

Yea, for temperature stability, you'll want to cover up that slab. There's a big difference in the gym area of my garage (where we installed laminate wood.)

Re: Creating my Smoking Lounge!

Bought the flooring yesterday....gotta let it sit for a few days to "condition" to the room it will be in and then get it installed.

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...n/flooring.jpg

Also kept doing my homework on the ventilation system and realized I was in serious need of a fresh air intake. So at least one more hole to cut in the siding.

Re: Creating my Smoking Lounge!

Progress continues...I got the exhaust vent cut into the wall and installed.

Started cutting the hole out...that proved to be a real pain in the ass!
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-10-46_711.jpg

My first breakthrough to the outside...can't lie, I was nervous as hell cutting this out. Didn't want to ruin my siding.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-32-53_291.jpg

Cut the entire body of the fan out.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-19-38_934.jpg

And up she went.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-19-05_547.jpg

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-37-08_672.jpg

Had some wiring issues, mostly because I'm not an electrician...but it's up now and working very well. I am going to box that area up and insulate it some so I don't hear it as much. Gonna pretty up the outside as well. I'll keep posting progress!

DO BE advised, starlings will find their way in there in a WEEK. So go ahead and cover that with a screen while you are
doing that whole thing and before you go inside for the real fun......ehh, I guess the screen is on the inside, so they
won't have much fun once they nose that flapper open.

I plan on boxing it in and covering with a grate so it looks nicer. Just haven't gotten there yet.

How loud is it? Would you be able to watch tv with the volume at a normal level?

It's a little too loud to watch tv at a normal level, IMO, just barely though. I listen to music without problem. I think as soon as I frame it in, it will no longer be an issue.

This is what I have with a return air grill in the ceiling. It is ducted inside the attic and shoots out the side of the house. Super quiet and 1700 cfm

Actually yes...finally! Got a lot of work done this weekend while the wife was out of town. Funny coincedence.

Started putting the floor down on Fri
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...3-29-36_41.jpg

Things went pretty fast honestly, specially due to several interuptions.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-17-30_991.jpg

Cutting out around the stair was about the hardest part, and it wasn't challenging.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-53-17_483.jpg

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-11-45_559.jpg

Cut around the water heater, which I'm going to hide away.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-11-37_960.jpg

That finished the flooring for now. I'll be heading out to get the corner round soon.

icantbejon 05-21-2012 10:50 AM

Re: Creating my Smoking Lounge!

Then I started putting up a few decorations....just little stuff.

Cut out the bottom of an old humidor and put it up on the wall to cover the verizon fios box in the garage.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-39-25_289.jpg

Got this picture at CI Fest this year, it had to go up.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-52-31_649.jpg

Finally, I got my AC/Heater unit up and running. It's going to move in the long run, but for now it functions.

I got the last of these from the Perdomo booth. You had to buy two of their samplers to get it. Then got Nick to sign it, which was pretty cool.

That lounge is going to be awesome! Was the wood hard to put down? We are seriously considering doing it ourselves in our home but I don't have any experience with it. We were shooting for some laminate or composite..the real stuff is EXPENSIVE! lol

Scott, as far as I'm tracking right now we'll be around in early July. Let me know when you're in town and we can set something up for a visit.

I went with the laminate as well, and it wasn't hard to put down in my opinion. It was my first experience laying it and it went smoothly. My only real suggestion is making sure you have a sliding miter saw because a regular miter isn't big enough to cut through the pieces. Other than that, it is really just cutting it to fit and using the spacers. I think we're going to end up using this in more of the house now that I know how. Real wood is super expensive, I agree. My dogs have totally ruined the real wood we have in the house so I'll never use it again.

Staying to box in my fan. The damn right side pulled in on me while hanging and is not level. Driving me absolutely crazy! I will fix with shims doing drywall, but still annoying.

I lined it with window screen to prevent bugs from getting in as well.

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...-05-28_424.jpg

Also put in a dimmer switch for the fan, which reduced the nose considerably.
