All my favorites have been mentioned. For historical reference, though, you have to give props to Judy Garland and Julie Andrews.

Another vote here for Alison Krauss, her voice will cut right through you. It's what I imagine the voice of an angel would be.

Re: Great female vocalists

I'm not one that is a big opera fan but this woman, Barbara Padilla, blew me away on America's Got Talent, a show I also do not often watch.

Her singing made me feel this statement by Morgan Freeman's character from Shawshank Redemption when Tim Robbins' character put opera on the prison PA system.

"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free"

Doris Day had a powerful instrument and knew how to use it. Pure, clean and true. It's a shame that she got pigeon holed into novelty tunes. Her earlier stuff was incredible. If we're talking current vocalists, I like Anna Nalick, :dr And she sings good too!

She really hit her peak (vocally) before her movie career took off.

Her movie debut, Romance on the High Seas, is my favorite because, well for one she was an absolute doll and they gave her real songs to sing.

The few I will add
older
Abby Lincoln
Her version of Afro Blue is fantastic if you can find it.

Joni Mitchell

Carole King

newer
Jenny Lewis
She is in the band Rilo Kiley. She also did a solo album and one with the Watson Twins.
Her album with the Watson Twins has a Dusty Springfield feel to it. :tu

Amy Millan with her solo stuff and with her band Stars.

Maria Taylor another favorite female singer/soloist.

*I know Emmylou Harris has been mention but I just wanted to add my favorite song of hers. When she was playing with Gram Parsons and did Love Hurts. IMHO it was the best version of the song hands down.

ok, rant off

I'm 32, but back in the mid 90's I worked with a guy who was in his 30's then and he turned me on to Renaissance. He had been to see them live a couple of times with his older brother and was borderline obsessed. Hell I just like good music, I'll take some Dead and Floyd over anything else most days. I do agree with the Stevie Nicks pick as well, that choice is passed from my dad.
