I live in MO but my favorite B&M is in KS, luckily the tax rate is the same for both states.

This country loves to, for lack of a better term, abuse the smokers and tobacco users. When money needs to be raised one of the first taxes they raise is tobacco.

If you make a purchase online from a store in another state, which tax rate applies?

Technically you would owe the tax to the state you live in, and the online shop does not charge you their state tax. Somehow I bet a lot of folks accidentally "forget" to voluntarily submit those taxes to their own state.

You dont pay Tobacco tax. The tax due is Sales tax and that is calculated based upon the delivery address. :2

Thanks for clarifying that, they still get more than enough of my money, as a single white male with a decent job ... I'm boned.

70% here in MN. They have always been forerunners for raping tobacco users. Heard they are in the process of raising it again in the near future too.

MN is currently 70% (35% on wholesale tobacco and 35% health assessment "fee") and by Monday when the budget makes it to Governor Daytons desk the tax is going to take a huge jump. Not exactly how it will impact cigars but it will pole vault us to #3 in the nation. Tax per pack of cigs will jump from roughly $1.38 to $2.58. Ugh...

Here it is:

"The governor and DFL legislative leaders already have agreed on the two key components — an income tax hike on high earners and a $1.60-per-pack hike in the tobacco tax, which would more than *double the existing levy."

What if you order online from a different state than the one you live in?

If your state has a "use tax" then you are supposed to report your out of state purchases on your state income tax form.

However, if you are one of the dozen or so people in your state who do so you will be flagged by the state as dangerously insane and your name will be turned over to the NSA for further investigation. :r
