Yep, they really race, though except for a few of the high dollar race teams most don't really push it. As far as winning, there are different classes. Sparky, which is the ones with all the Jelly Bellys on it, won the Silver, they didn't run a Gold on the last day because the winds got to high but Strega, a race P51 won it because it won the Saturday race. The race planes average in the high 400s around the course where Sparky averages about 340, at maybe 50-60% throttle. Last year Strega did three laps at 500mph. Sparky is my father in law's plane.

Sparky is a P-51 sponsored by the local Jelly Belly factory and owned by Steve's Father in law. Flown by his Brother in law Brant. :tu

I love old planes like those. There is a Naval Air Museum we visit in Penscola atleast once a year. I have never seen that many "old" planes like that in flight at one place.
