Don't get me wrong- it's absolutely terrific stuff and an excellent value. I'm not knocking the product at all. I'm just trying to warn you that it's a bit 'deep end' for a first bourbon to try. Coming from the world of Scotch, it might frighten you away from some of the bourbons that might be a little more familiar/accessible to you.

Giving serious thought to buying the Buffalo Trace Exp. Being at work with nothing to do is bad for my wallet

The buffalo trace should be good. Consensus has it that this is a well priced and great tasting bourbon. I have never tasted it, nor is it available to me here in Montreal. However, if it were, I would have it without a doubt.

It's been one of my favorites for some time, though 4 Roses Small Batch is in the same price range and is simply finger lickin' good. I really feel it has taken over being my favorite as a very damn good bourbon with an everyday price.

Right now I'm sipping on a Weller SR 7yr. A wheater!

BT is good bourbon. I actually wasn't too fond of my 1st bottle and the next one settled in very well. If you're not used to bourbon then the rye content might be a tad much.

Picked up a bottle of Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond per many recommendations in this thread. I'm anxious to give it a try later tonight! (I am aware it is not a Bourbon. :tu)

I wish I could find more, Joey (ir13) found it at my local Total Wine then I picked up their last bottle months ago and they never restocked

An outstanding, inexpensive bourbon is Old Weller Antigue. It was a 7 year-old,107 proof, wheated bourbon. Recently, the age statement was removed when the Buffalo Trace Distillery redesigned the bottle and label. I tried the bourbon in the new bottle and I believe that it is even better. My fear was that Buffalo Trace may have started using younger bourbon and the taste would be inferior. The distillery stated that the bourbon is still 7 years old.

Another very good and inexpensive bourbon is Very Old Barton 100 proof. Unfortunately, it has very limited distribution.

I was in the liquor store last week and spyed a bottle of Jefferson and thought I would give it a try. Liked it very much was reasonably priced about 22.00.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

A few years ago, there was a 15 year old Jefferson Reserve which was excellent. Subsequently, they started using younger bourbon and I thought that it was inferior.

The Jefferson's Presidential Select 17 yr old bourbon is excellent. I have had batches 1 and 2. They were great; however, they are expensive. Controversy continues concerning the source of the bourbon and if it is in fact Stitzel Weller bourbon. Personally, I don't care. I like it.

I've done a lot of events with Jefferson's Reserve. Good people, and great bourbon. I have enjoyed all of their lines including Sam Houston, Jefferson's, Jefferson's Reserve, and the Presidential Select. The PS is awesome, but yes, expensive.

My latest purchase! Didn't realize the new Master's Collection was out. Maple Wood Finish! Has a bite to it, and an interesting, complex finish. Not as smooth as the Sweet Mash from last year, but much more complex. Found it at World of Beverages, on Camp Creek Pkwy, Atlanta.

Nice I've yet to bite on this years masters collection. How is it compared to say the 08 Masters? Which I found to be excellent. That bottle lasted me one glorious night.

Sorry Danny while chastising Matt I overlooked your question. I enjoy Eagle Rare a good deal. It is smooth and on the 'rye' side if there is such a thing. It is a great value for the price.

This is pretty much what I have read online. I'm a fan of Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey and Maker's 46, so I think this should fit in nicely with my bourbons.

I think this year that I am gonna pass on Stagg. I love the stuff, but just can't afford the price tag this time of year. It was tough going to the store and leaving it on the shelf. :(

Would Blanton's be a good start for a bourbon newb?

I just know that I literally haven't quite shaken the smell of anything resembling Jack Daniels from a bad episode when I was 15 years old to get the idea to try bourbon/whiskey/scotch ever again.

Blantons is good, don't know if I'd start with it though. I suggest Eagle Rare to start out with.

Either that or some Basil Hayden. For me, it's a light, slightly spicy bourbon

:r Jack is sour mash whiskey and has a very unique smell. I don't think bourbon smells like it honestly. You should be fine. Regular Jack is not so good, but I do recommend Gentleman Jack. Tastes completely different, much more mellow and less harsh, not that nasty sour taste either.

All are great starting recommendations. I agree with all of them. I really did like the Eagle Rare 10 Year Single Barrel. Four Roses Single Barrel would be another great start. Both will run you roughly $35 a bottle. So not too pricey, and pretty common.

I know bourbon, whiskey, and scotch are all a bit different, but they all smell close enough alike to me to bring back the memories (and lack thereof in same cases) that involved throwing up cool ranch doritos a lot. (And yes, I've never touched the cool ranch doritos ever since either. :r

I had a similar experience involving cheap whiskey and store brand Dr. Pepper about 10-11 years ago. Until recently I couldn't smell Dr. Pepper without feeling a bit sick.

Yeah....I have had a few of those stories as well. Jager, goldschalger and any cinnamon liqueur, I cannot even smell them!

Oh man that's brutal even the close smells throw you for a spin, well there's always run and tequila. I guess all you can do is try. Good luck! :tu

Blanton's would be a great start, albiet on the pricey side. Might put Bulliet on your to-try list. Half the price of Blanton's and easy to drink.
