Thanks for the warning. I won't update. Are we missing anything outlandish in this update?

No it was just for some type of security issue from what I've read but Apple hasn't really disclosed what.

I'm not brave enough to jailbreak.

The update was to close the PDF Exploit thus rendering JailbreakMe useless,

The only reason for the update was the security issue with .pdf. This was the issue that allowed the new iphones to be jailbroken.

iOS 4.0.2 Update for iPhone and iPod touch
FreeType

CVE-ID: CVE-2010-1797

Available for: iOS 2.0 through 4.0.1 for iPhone 3G and later, iOS 2.1 through 4.0 for iPod touch (2nd generation) and later

Impact: Viewing a PDF document with maliciously crafted embedded fonts may allow arbitrary code execution

Description: A stack buffer overflow exists in FreeType's handling of CFF opcodes. Viewing a PDF document with maliciously crafted embedded fonts may allow arbitrary code execution. This issue is addressed through improved bounds checking.

The only reason for the update is to close the "security hole" that allowed JailBreakMe to work.

No harm in jailbreaking. If something happens, simply plug your phone into iTunes and restore to your most recent backup.

Guess I'll wait until the 4.0.2 jailbreak is available.

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

You can still Jailbreak on 4.0.2 as long as it's not an iPhone 4 (from what I understand).

Seeing as it's legal to JB now, I assume there will be a 4.0.2 compatible break coming soon

It still voids the warranty.

When are they going to fix the proximity sensor issue? That my only real grip anymore with the 4. The death grip has been more manageable with the best skin ever on it and the case is on the way, but the proximity sensor is still the sucks.

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

Also, be sure to backup your SHSH blobs via Firmware Umbrella or Cydia, that way you can always jailbreak your phone using the 4.0/4.01 firmware.

Got my free case in from Apple today. Pretty cool, I think I like it better than the Belkin Case I had already purchased. Comes with a little stand to set the phone in when watching videos, etc

Tony,
Is that a hard case or soft as the Belkin?

While I don't think it will be an issue with the new iPhone due to the back being the same type of material as the screen, I still have nightmares of what my InCase did to my 3. Any dust that accumulated between the plastic and the phone acted as if abrasives and scratched and chipped the heck out of it.

It is more of a ridgid case than the belkin.

The only case I am waiting to get is the Speck Candyshell. I ordered the Speck Pickelskin as my free case.

I need to get a case for mine, haven't decided yet but I have the really good Invisi Shield on the front and back now.

BTW, I love this phone, just amazing, but I'm coming from having my little Zoolander flip phone. :r So take my view with a grain of salt.

Facetime is awesome, just blown away with how cool it is, especially with Elli now traveling for work more. :tu

So far, so awesome!

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

I just got my iphone 4 on Monday. I was still rocking the original iphone, but it stopped being able to connect to the internet, which took out my voice mail. After exhausting all the possible fixes, they decided it was just a problem with the phone, which was, of course, out of warranty. I did some sweet talking, and got them to offer me 50% of an upgrade to the 16G 4! :banger

Ordered it Wednesday, it showed up Monday!. This thing is sweet! Such an improvement over the original.

I picked up a Griffin hard case while I wait for my free one.

The only negative is that the upgrade lost me my grandfathered unlimited data plan :td

Got my free "bumper" today.
I actually like it a lot.
Took off my Belkin and am using the bumper now.

I got it yesterday as well. So far I really like it. I'm mostly excited that I actually have a cover on it now. I've been so paranoid of dropping it with all of the horror stories of the backs cracking.

The actual GPS itself won't, but by default you will be using data unless you are in a hotspot because it has to populate the map.

I ordered an received the InCase that's clear. I didn't find out until I got it that it only a 3/4 case. No protection in the front. Good thing I already got a shield for it.

Speck’s PixelSkin HD is the one I ordered, I made my choice the first day of the program and if I remember correctly it should get here around the end of September. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to keep the phone if there is not a fix for the Proximity sensor, it has caused me a lot of issues.

What's the proximity sensor issue? I'll take your case if you do decide to sell it.

From ZDNet

The proximity sensor in the iPhone 4 is what tells it how close the phone is to your face so that it can turn the touchscreen off while you’re making a phone call. This has the effect of a) saving battery power, and b) preventing inadvertent touches of the screen by your face.

The problem is that the proximity sensor in the iPhone 4 is on a hair trigger. It’s either not sensitive enough, miscalibrated or both.

I have had this issue happen to me. It is no reason to throw the new iphone away, but I will be happy when it is fixed.

Yardgnome 08-23-2010 02:36 PM

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

It might be the way I hold the phone, but the sensor rarely works on mine, I end up muting people or facetimeing them at least once every 10 minutes.

I think most of the issue is in the new placement, on the older phones it is where the front camera is now, on IPhone4 it is above the speaker.

New hardware design - iPhone 4.5? :hm Or do they sell all manufactured stock and then that's it until iPhone 5...very interesting.

the next jb will be for 4.1. The smaller updates usually are skipped due to the time it takes to break the code.

I'm running 4.1 which has the fix for the proximity sensor. It's MUCH better now. No more face buttons or sudden speakerphone. I'm pleased.

Apple released a beta version of their Facetime software for use on Mac.

You can use it to Facetime call between desktops and compatible iphones and ipod touches.

To jailbreak or not to jailbreak that is the question. I actually did it, and then i reversed it because i loaded too much crap and messed something up and got annoyed, but its my own fault. Trying to decide if i wanna be a jaiilbreaker or use vanilla ios.

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

There are pluses and minuses for both Myles. Almost the first year I had my 3GS I saw no reason to jailbreak. I really liked the UI and it did everything I needed it to do. Then when I decided I wanted my phone to do a little more I weighed the pro's and con's of jailbreaking and decided it was worth the risk.

Now I can't imagine having a non-jailbroken version of my iPhone 4. From Lockscreen cydgets to BiteSMS, tethering, SBSettings, Installous, Winterboard etc etc etc. I literally couldn't imagine my iPhone without them.

And i absolutely loved the day or so i had it jailbroken for, and considering everything i've read says there is little to no risk of bricking your phone, it seems like the "right" thing to do. The problem i had was that i had installed backgrounder, and some stop multitasking app that i forget the name of, that along with something else. I was trying to make it so that i could all together kill apps but keep them in the background if i wanted. Everytime i would go into sbsettings, ipod would be running even if i hadn't used it. If i killed the process, it would just be there a few seconds later again! This frustrated me and so i restored my phone. Now i'm thinking of jailbreaking but taking it slow and not going app-install-crazy. I don't know :)

Chingas 10-20-2010 05:50 PM

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

Do it! Just in moderation that's all. This way you can try to pinpoint what app gives you issues, if any.

LasciviousXXX 10-20-2010 06:00 PM

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

Wait.... you had backgrounder running along side a stop multi-tasker at the same time? Wouldn't those two have problems running concurrently as one is always trying to do the opposite of the other?

Yeah maybe start out with the essential apps and then roll from there. Gizmodo put out something on a new multi-task managing app. I'll look it up and get back to you ;tu

btw what did you guys use to jb 4.1? i tried greenpois0n and it was not working so i got limera1n and it worked np

Tyr informed me on GP and it worke like a charm!

LasciviousXXX 10-20-2010 06:22 PM

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

I used Greenpois0n for my iPhone as well as Echo's. I JB a friends iPhone for them using Limera1n just because I wanted to see if there were any inherent differences.

I could see how that app would cause trouble with Backgrounder. They would just keep trying to cancel each other out.

goalie204 10-20-2010 06:27 PM

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

i suppose that makes sense, i guess i didn't fully understand what i was doing, i just downloaded them based on suggestions from a friend; maybe he didn't know what he was doing either.

Was there any difference in greepois0n vs limera1n, any reason to use one over another, or even alternative options? I'm going to light a nice cigar and get crackin on this soon :)

btw - is there an alternative chat anywhere that people are still using?

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

just did a jb, love limera1n, takes like 2 seconds. Installed openssh, changed root and mobile passwords and turned sshd off. Installed winterboard, five icon dock, iFile, sbsettings so far thats it. Any suggestions? :)

Re: iphone 4 just announced.

Install activator through cydia, it allows you to set things to button presses ie. Short hold on home button to activate camera.. Whatever you want, it's pretty sweet... Insomnia is another good one.. Forces your iPhone to stay on wifi when it's available.. Facebreak is cool, it allows you to use FaceTime over 3G... 3G unrestrictor is awesome if you wanna use apps that require wifi over 3G... There's tons of great stuff.. I know a thing or two about jailbreaking lol ;-)
