Minotouro is guaranteed at Bitetti combat. After reading rumors on the internet Lil nog contacted the promotion to say he will be there to fight Alex Steibling. Minotouro said "I'm in. Nothing can keep me out of this event. I want to fight and I can't miss this one. I'm ready and dying to fight," .
But after Bitetti combat Lil nog pretty much has a done deal with UFC. Lil nog, Ricardo Arona, and Pedro Rizzo are scheduled to undergo test by the Army School of physical education around the time of the event, the first mma fighters ever to do so. |

Re: Official MMA Thread
Two really big guys with lots of power but when it comes down to it, I think Brock is the better wrestler and will prevail.
Some news: http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...=9410&zoneid=2 According to a new rule passed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission Wednesday, referees in Nevada now have the opportunity to get a second look at a fight’s end to determine its legality. The final wording as passed: “A referee at the conclusion of a contest or exhibition stopped immediately due to an injury to an unarmed combatant pursuant to NAC 467.718 and after making a decision, may view a replay if available in order to determine whether the injury in question was caused a legal blow or a foul.” The rule addresses several controversial stoppages in recent history where a fighter lost a contest because the referee couldn’t see an injury that forced a bout’s stoppage. A referee may now use instant replay to determine whether the action that caused the injury was legal or a foul and make a decision on the fight’s result. Only a referee can decide whether to order a replay. In one of the most prominent examples of the need to address injury stoppages, UFC welterweight Anthony Johnson was unintentionally poked in the eye by Kevin Burns at UFC Fight Night 14 last July and was denied an appeal to his TKO loss due to the commission’s “lack of remedy” on the incident. After a discussion on the issues surrounding the new rule, the five-member commission passed it by unanimous vote. NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer told MMAWeekly.com the rule could take effect in as early as 30 days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The “UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort” pay-per-view card is going toe-to-toe with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez HBO pay-per-view event on Sept. 19. The UFC is known for its creative marketing and counter-programming tactics and it looks like the MMA giant has come up with a good plan to beef up awareness for UFC 103. The UFC will air a two-hour telecast of the UFC 103 undercard commercial free on Spike TV as a lead in for the UFC 103 main card on pay-per-view, according to a source at the UFC. It remains to be seen how well either event will do with two major PPV events on the same night. Will the UFC, which has been flourishing on PPV in these tough economic times, take a hit going head-to-head with a major boxing card? Is Mayweather a legit pay-per-view draw? He had Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton to help pump up sales in his two biggest PPV fights. Will boxing fans, who also follow MMA, bail on the UFC to see Mayweather back in action or will they be lured into watching Rich Franklin take on Vitor Belfort at UFC 103? One thing is for sure, it’s going to be an interesting night of fights http://punch.freedomblogging.com/200...spike-tv/6361/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looks like B.J. Penn was still able to get some changes through in his case against Georges St. Pierre... there is now a rule known as the "B.J. Penn Rule" that will allow the referee to foul fighters for excessive use of a substance that is deemed illegal. "In a meeting held Wednesday in Las Vegas, the NSAC approved language prohibiting the use of foreign substances on a fighter’s body prior to or during a fight that "could result in an unfair advantage. Dubbed by a commission official as the "B.J. Penn Rule," the use of foreign substances will now be added to a list of "fouls" in the Nevada Administrative Code that address tactics illegal to fighters, such as eye gouging, small joint manipulation, or biting." http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/8/20...was-still-able ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Real Offer The UFC Presented To Fedor The UFC's courtship of Fedor Emelianenko, which has been ongoing for nearly two years, ended again at the end of last month when the Russian heavyweight signed with Strikeforce. Ever since Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, purchased Pride FC in March 2007, the UFC has been in hot pursuit of Fedor. Despite the years of pursuit, Fedor has yet to meet in person with UFC President Dana White or UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta. A lot of rumors have circulated about the offer that the UFC presented to Fedor. According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer newsletter, both sides met on July 28th. Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta were present at the meeting, as was Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelchtein, while Fedor listened in on a phone line and never said a word. As reported last month, the UFC deal leaked to the internet by CBS Radio MMA host Carmichael Dave was for six fights at $30 million. According to Meltzer, that number is not accurate. The UFC presented Fedor with a three-fight deal, thinking that the fewer fights would be more enticing for Fedor as opposed to a longer term deal. The actual number was a $2 million guarantee per fight, plus a sliding percentage on PPV buys, so Fedor's per-fight take could have reached $5 million. While there was no $30 million offer, if he won the championship and the sport continued to draw the numbers it's doing now, he could have earned more. However, it is unclear if he could have been cut after a loss, a clause common in UFC contracts. Most of the rest of the points are consistent with the Carmichael Dave report. Fedor was offered an immediate title shot with Brock Lesnar, with M-1 Global receiving a cut of the Lesnar - Fedor PPV (which would likely be the biggest PPV in MMA history) on top of Fedor's salary. With the sliding percentage he was presented on top of the $2 million guarantee, if that show did 800,000 buys (which would be a huge disappointment), Fedor would come out with a $3 million payday. However, if the show did a more realistic number like 1.5 million buys (which is a little less than what UFC 100 drew), he'd pocket more than $5 million, the biggest one-night payoff in the history of the sport, in addition to M-1 Global's take. Fedor would also be able to don the M-1 Global logo on any of his attire and on his banners, and would be allowed to compete in combat sambo, a point of contention in their negotiations in 2007. As reported before, the deal was turned down - like in 2007 - because M-1 Global wanted to be 50% co-promoters of and show headlined by Fedor, which means getting 50% of the profits after Fedor's cut. The negotiations ended shortly after M-1 Global refused to budge on that point. "We will work only on co-promotion conditions," stated Vadim Finkelchtein, president of M-1 Global, after the meeting with White and Fertitta. "I don't understand the policy of the UFC. The UFC won't be able to control the whole world. The market is so big. . . The UFC proposal doesn't give us a chance for us to do what we want to do." Fedor ended up signing with Strikeforce for an undisclosed salary, believed to be $1 million per fight. The deal is similar to his deal with Affliction in several ways. The deal with Strikeforce gives M-1 Global the rights to market the shows outside of North America, where the shows will be pushed as an M-1 Global event. In North America, the three shows headlined by Fedor will be billed as a joint promotion of M-1 Global and Strikeforce. This is similar to their deal with Affliction, where M-1 had the overseas rights for the Affliction shows and sold them to different sports stations as M-1 Global events, as opposed to Affliction. "I am very happy and excited about the upcoming collaboration with Strikeforce," Finkelchtein stated after the Strikeforce deal was announced. "We are very pleased that we found a reliable partner and I feel that Strikeforce and M-1 can support each other on many things. This will create big opportunities for both parties to test their fighters against worthy opponents." One interesting point, and this is likely the case for the Strikeforce deal, is that even though M-1 Global co-promoted the Affliction shows and were entitled to 50% of the profits from the shows headlined by Fedor, they did not fund 50% of the losses from those shows which eventually put Affliction out of business. Affliction had pay-per-view revenue and still lost millions per show. Strikeforce generally does OK for their shows, with some shows losing a little while others generate a small profit. Up until Fedor's signing, their highest salaried fighter had been Frank Shamrock, who took home $369,790 for his fight with Nick Diaz last April. Meanwhile, the entire payroll for this past Sunday's Carano vs. Cyborg event, the biggest in company history, was only $468,500, which is less than half of what Fedor's take would likely be. http://www.fightline.com/news/mma/20...ko/index.shtml |

Whatever happened to the Cain Velazquez v. Shane Carwin fight scheduled for UFC 104? I would much rather see them fight to establish (at least somewhat) who the legit #1 contender is rather than just keep throwing guys at Brock. I guess this way though Dana can just get 2 Championships fights for Lesnar quickly rather than having any sort of order in the heavyweight division.

The thing is they may both be subpar strikers, but Carwin has lethal KO power, something I'm sure Lesnar has, but Brock has yet to knock somebody out from his feet. His victories have all come via GnP, while Carwin has just demolished people including his KO of Gonzaga with a punch that was the equivalent of a jab. I doubt Brock will keep this on the feel tho, but if Carwin can, I think he has a serious shot to KO Lesnar. |

More news bits:
Velasquez/Rothwell at 104 Official http://mmajunkie.com/news/15923/cain...os-angeles.mma With original opponent Shane Carwin receiving a recent upgrade to title-bout status, heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (6-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will now face Ben Rothwell (30-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 104. AOL FanHouse was the first to report the new bout, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has been able to confirm the switch with sources close to the contest. Featuring a light heavyweight title fight between current champion Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, UFC 104 takes place Oct. 24 in Los Angeles. The undefeated Velasquez has earned four-straight wins in the UFC, including an impressive performance in June in a one-sided unanimous-decision win over Cheick Kongo. The UFC 99 bout was the first time the American Kickboxing trained fighter has been forced to a decision, having earned his previous five wins by TKO. An eight-year veteran of the sport, Rothwell was slated to fight Chase Gormley at the recently canceled "Affliction: Trilogy" event. The 27-year-old has won 14 of his past 15 bouts, including two wins over UFC light heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski, as well as wins over notables Ricco Rodriguez, Travis Fulton and Roy Nelson. Velasquez was originally expected to met Carwin in the evening's co-main event. That fight was scratched in favor of Carwin taking on heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 in November. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Penn vs Sanchez to headline UFC 105 free on Spike TV http://insidefights.com/2009/08/21/s...dline-ufc-105/ A source within the UFC has confirmed to Inside Fights that BJ Penn will likely defend his lightweight title against Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 105. Penn has claimed that he would never fight in the United Kingdom again after earning what he thought was an unacceptable purse for his fight against Joe Stevenson. The internal belief is that the free television show will likely pull in millions of viewers, and that kind of viewer base can help turn Penn and Sanchez into even bigger stars, which will translate into bigger pay per view buyrates for both fighters down the road. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This sucks! DirecTV to Drop Versus (WEC) This story has flown under the radar (except on hockey blogs), but yes, Versus and DirecTV are having a spat. The existing deal between DirecTV and Versus expires after August 31st and the parties are presently unable to reach an agreement on financial terms to continue the partnership: Versus, formerly Outdoor Life Network, was rebranded in 2006 and is the home of the National Hockey League as well as collegiate sports from the Pac-10, Big 12, Mountain West and Ivy League conferences, the Tour de France bicycle race, Davis Cup Tennis, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), World Extreme Cage fighting (WEC), the Indy Racing League and Professional Boxing. The network is available in about 75 million homes and is wholly-owned by Comcast. It is unclear how many subscribers the network has on DirecTV, which has about 24.2 million subscribers overall. In a statement, DirecTV said that the dispute centers on carriage fees. According to SNL Kagan, Versus was getting about 18 cents per subscriber per month in carriage fees from cable operators in 2009. "In our contract discussions, Comcast has demanded a deal for Versus that is not comparable to other providers and is pushing for a significant rate hike that does not reflect current market terms or the value of its programming," DirecTV said in a prepared statement. "We will continue to try and negotiate a fair deal, but we intend to hold the line on our programming costs and protect our customers against these unfair demands that are both discriminatory and wholly unrealistic given current market rates. If we do not reach an agreement, the network will come down on Sept. 1 following the expiration of our contract with Versus." Bisping vs Kang, Hardy vs. Kim UFC 105
http://mmajunkie.com/news/15932/repo...or-ufc-105.mma Reports: Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang, Dan Hardy vs. Dong Hyun Kim in works for UFC 105 The UFC's fall schedule is rapidly filling, and with UFC 103 and 104's fight cards nearly complete, the organization has turned its attention to UFC 105 in November. And according to a pair of new reports from Fighters Only magazine, two high-profile fights for the card are nearly signed. According to Fighters Only, Michael Bisping (17-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) will likely meet Denis Kang (32-11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), while Dan Hardy (22-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Dong Hyun Kim (12-0-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) are in discussions to meet at the Spike TV-broadcast event in Manchester, England. Bisping was originally expected to face Wanderlei Silva, though a recent surgery has left the "Axe Murderer" on the shelf for the immediate future. With the Brazilian unable to face "The Count," Bisping will reportedly now meet Kang. Bisping will be returning to action for the first time since a devastating loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 100, while Kang will be looking to build on the momentum of an April win over Xavier Foupa-Pokam. While the now-scrapped Bisping vs. Silva bout was expected to enjoy main event status, the Fighters Only report suggests the new Bisping vs. Kang match will be relegated to co-main event status in favor of a yet-to-be-named "high-profile" matchup. In addition to the Bisping vs. Kang bout, previously announced UFC 105 participant Dan Hardy will also meet Dong Hyun Kim according to a second report from Fighters Only. Hardy fought most recently in a June split-decision win over Marcus Davis, upping his record in the UFC to 3-0. Kim returns to action for the first time since a UFC 100 win over T.J. Grant. Kim still maintains an undefeated record after his January loss to Karo Parisyan was overturned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to a failed drug screen by "The Heat." With the expected matchups to the UFC 105 card live on Spike TV, the event now includes: * BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez * * Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang* * Dan Hardy vs. Dong Hyun Kim* * Matt Brown vs. James Wilks* * Ross Pearson vs. Aaron Riley* * DaMarques Johnson vs. Peter Sobotta* * Roli Delgado vs. Andre Winner* |

Haven't looked through all the pages, so if somebody has brought this up I apologize. If you are looking for a great fighter to support than look no further than Tim Kennedy. Tim is a Staff SGT in the U.S. Army Special Forces, and has been deployed multiple times in support of OIF and OEF. Currently he is fighting in StrikeForce. He was scheduled to fight Cyborg until Cyborg hurt himself. His next fight is 25SEP against Zak Cummings.

Re: Official MMA Thread
I still have no idea why people think Bisping is any good, and how Kang beating him would be that much of an upset. He is a good fighter, but hes still at best a B level fighter. The fight being in England though should be motivation for Kang to try and finish him, we all know what happens in close fights involving Mike and the judges over there.
BJ/Diego should be great. I really want to see somebody push the pace with Penn. I was shocked at how he just basically handled Kenny, totally didn't expect it. Should be a great fight. |
Re: Official MMA Thread
I would think that Kang would be the favorite. Been going through TUF 9 today the more I hear Bisping talk the more I wanna watch Hendo KO him.

His team mate Rashad Evans is taking on one of his former foes, Quinton Jackson, but what does Jardine think of the fight? In a recent interview, Jardine speaks about Rashad, “Rampage” and Machida, kicking off with an analysis of his own fight with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. “I exited wrong a lot. I'd throw my combinations, and I would exit with my hands in the wrong place, and he would recoil and come through with punches. It was just a real subtle thing, and it's something that I've worked on since.” “I think that's a real good match-up for Rashad. I think Rashad might have a little bit too much speed for Quinton to deal with. I see that going really good for Rashad.” Jardine then turned his attention to the absolute enigma that is Lyoto Machida. “I don't want to give away too much, but you can't play into his strengths. You can't lunge forward. You just can't lunge on him. You've got to keep your balance and you've to keep your head about you, and you've got to be unorthodox yourself.” Prior to his unfortunate loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Keith Jardine had took wins over Brandon Vera and former UFC light-heavyweight champ Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. http://mmabay.co.uk/jardine%20on%20r...%20rashad.html Speaking of Bisping/Hendo: :r http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m.../hendohoff.gif |

Don Frye Breaks his silence about M1 withdrawl
http://mmajunkie.com/news/15946/don-...for-change.mma While the executives of M-1 Global are no strangers to controversy and criticism, the organization's upcoming "M-1 Global presents Breakthrough" took a hit when original headliner Don Frye backed out of his fight with Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. While M-1 Global CEO Joost Raimond immediately went on the offensive, issuing a press release that questioned Frye's motives for backing out, "The Predator" remained relatively silent on the subject. That is, until now. "I didn't drop out; I walked away," Frye recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (http://www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "I didn't want to talk to anybody about this, but I'll talk to you fellas because you're my amigos. "This is business that should be conducted between me and Joost, or Roost, whatever his name is. But he got on the internet and did a Dana White/Perez Hilton internet blog and started talking [expletive]." Raimond's statements suggested Frye may have simply been looking for a way out of the fight with Lawal, and that he used the seemingly simple relocation of the Aug. 28 event from Los Angeles to Kansas City, Kan., as his ticket out of the event. Frye insists that's not an accurate representation of what happened. "Here's the deal: [The event] didn't just move from L.A.," Frye said. "It went from the Staples Center to the L.A. Convention Center. From the L.A. convention center to the Hilton in Las Vegas. From the Hilton in Las Vegas to an Indian casino on the Oklahoma-Texas border. From the Indian casino on the Oklahoma-Texas border to an Indian casino up in Tulsa, which is North Oklahoma. And from there up to Kansas City, Mo. "So you know, after four or five times changing the venue, and then we asked [Raimond] 'Hey, what are you doing for advertising? Are you sending a photographer out to Don's house?' He says, 'No, we're just going to use stock photos off the Internet.'" With a complete lack of faith in the promoter, Frye said he made the difficult decision to walk away. "So they don't know where the hell they're going to have it," Frye said. "They're not putting any money into advertising. So at that point we said, 'You know what? You just ain't got your [expletive] together. We're walking away.'" Frye said he would have been happy keeping quiet about the entire situation, but Raimond's release forced him to speak. "That's something that's between me and Joost, but he had to go and get on the [expletive] Internet and pull this [expletive], so then it opened it up to the whole [expletive] world," Frye said. "That's his fault, not mine. "The position of douchebag fight promoter, who thinks he's tough because he hangs out with fighters and insults fighters – that position's already taken. We don't need that, OK?"[/b] After walking away from the M-1 Global event, Frye will instead face Dave "Pee Wee" Herman in the main event of "Shark Fights 6: Stars & Stripes" on Sept. 12 in Amarillo, Texas. "Geez, Louise, this guy's 6-foot-4, 240 (pounds)," Frye said. "(He's) 14-1. Who signed me up for this son-of-a-*****? "I may have to reach up and punch him in the kneecap." LOL Frye is obviously talking about Dana White in bold. :r |

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend, Renzo Gracie reveals he could join UFC
http://mmabay.co.uk/Story%2002415.html Original source: GracieMag.com Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend, Renzo Gracie has revealed he is in regular talks with UFC President, Dana White about joining the UFC, but only if the promotion can come up with the right kind of fight. Speaking to Sensei Sportv, Gracie said: “Dana White is my friend and we talk on the phone every now and again; whenever I have a suggestion for a fighter ready for the UFC we talk on the phone. We talk of my return and it may be that I fight in the Octagon, who knows. I haven’t any pretensions of becoming champion, but I’d like to face the champions. I’m going to keep fighting till I’m 50, for free is need be.” Gracie also spoke of Demian Maia’s title hopes in the middleweight division, something he can’t wait to see fulfilled. “He’s a golden boy, I can’t wait till Demian wears that belt on his waist.” Maia gets a chance to take a massive step forward at UFC 102 this coming weekend when he battles Nate Marquardt inside the octagon. Only time will tell if we will see a Gracie join him on the UFC roster any time soon. |
Re: Official MMA Thread
I 'm getting excited for this weekend fight mainly because Demian Maia is on the card. He is my favorite fighter to watch and root for. I watch his fights with the same passion I do for Steelers games. When I first read about him a year ago all I had to do was look at his bio to see he was the real deal. Then I saw he had a undefeated record and after watching him fight I was still amazed. And he keeps getting better pulling out new tricks every fight. Its also fun seeing Wandy in his corner, I can't think of a better teamate to have in your corner. If he wins he deserves a shot against Anderson Silva.
|
Re: Official MMA Thread
I'm a big Maia fan as well, and have loved the shows hes put on in the UFC, and the awesome fighting spirit he exudes. I've always thought it would be a BJJ guy who could be Anderson, but I'm just not sure Maia is the guy. For one, if J-Mac was giving him fits on the ground, I'm sure Anderson will be able to hold his own, if the fight even gets to the ground.
Personally I'm thinking Nate is gonna be too much for Maia, and I find it hard rooting against either. I think both guys are amazing fighters, but I don't think either is beating Silva. |
Re: Official MMA Thread
J Mac giving Maia fits? J Mac has 17 submission victories out of 21 wins as well as 3 submission of the night awards. He nearly got triangled just over a minute into the fight. The bell saved him from getting choked out to end the round. He was mounted for most of the 2nd round while recieving punches and elbows. Then he was submitted in the 3rd. Nathan comes from the same gym as J Mac and I doubt his ground skills are much better. If Almieda could submit Nathan I would think Maia would be able too also. Also if Maia can't sub Silva theirs not too many left in world that could. You could easily say Maia is the best bjj guy in UFC since Royce Gracie. And I think Maia is even better than Royce was just because the game has elevated since then. But it is a fight and anything can happen which makes it fun to watch.

Re: Official MMA Thread
Word is that the UFC is trying to sign Pat Miletich. I think they only reason they want to sign him is so Strickforce can't. Otherwise, there is no reason for them to do it, imo.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wandy's New Face http://www.fightlinker.com/wanderlei...s-new-face.mma The hot pointless rumor going around for the past few days was that Michael Bisping vs Wanderlei Silva (a rumor of a fight itself) was off because Wanderlei was getting his face fixed up by a plastic surgeon. I think we can all agree that Wand’s face generally looks like a balloon does four days after it was inflated, but I wasn’t aware that plastic surgeons were able to fix the mushy / puffy look. It’s a good thing his last fight earned him 60k Fight of the Night honors, because going in and saying “Fix it all” sounds expensive. http://www.fightlinker.com/pics/wandface.jpg http://www.fightlinker.com/pics/wandface2.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PARISYAN VS HAZELETT @ UFC 106 http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...9444&zoneid=13 A welterweight bout pitting returning fighters Karo Parisyan and Dustin Hazelett against each other has been verbally agreed to for UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. Sources close to the bout confirmed the agreement to MMAWeekly.com on Monday. Parisyan (18-5) hasnt fought since UFC 94 in January. He defeated Dong Hyun Kim on the card, but later had the victory changed to a no contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission when he tested positive for three banned painkilling substances. He was suspended for nine months and fined $32,000. Hazelett (12-4) last fought in November of 2008, when he defeated Tamdan McCrory by submission. He suffered a torn ACL while training for an anticipated bout with Ben Saunders at UFC 96. He had surgery to repair the injury, and has been sidelined, rehabbing, ever since. The two will be part of the undercard in support of a recently revealed title fight between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin. Tito Ortiz will make his UFC return on the same card, facing former UFC champion Mark Coleman in a light heavyweight bout at Mandalay Bay. |

Mark Coleman, Don Frye....sigh.....they need to set up an "Old Timers" fight league. Does anyone even care about these has-beens anymore?

Re: Official MMA Thread
I don't know if this was already posted but DREAM officials say they have a big suprise for DREAM 12. Rumors are they might be using a Strikeforce style cage. Paulo Filho, Alistair Overeem, Sakuraba, Murilo Rua and Eddie Alvarez are rumored on the card but nothing official yet.

I know Jmac has good Jits, but Maia is a world champion. I know he was in trouble most of the fight but IIR he escaped full mount and actually took Damien's back at one point. |

Either way I still can't see Maia beating Silva. His standup is still way too poor to compete with the likes of Anderson, it is going to take a real special fighter to beat Silva, I think we all know that already though. |

Fedor vs. Brett Rogers Announced:
http://mmamania.com/2009/08/26/fedor...ght-announced/ Strikeforce announced today at an open media workout in New York City that its prized free agent acquisition, Fedor Emelianenko (30-1), will make his promotional debut against undefeated hard-hitting heavyweight prospect, Brett Rogers (10-0). No confirmed date or location is available at this time; however, the showdown is likely to happen on a Showtime-produced card sometime in November. Emelianenko — a former Pride FC Heavyweight Champion and Affliction MMA headliner — recently signed a multi-fight contract with the San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion under a special co-promotion agreement with M-1 Global. “The Last Emperor” was in cruise control under the Affliction MMA banner after back-to-back wins over former UFC heavyweight champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski. He was in line for a WAMMA title defense against Josh Barnett at the Aug. 1 “Trilogy” event until “The Babyface Assassin” got popped for steroids in a random pre-fight drug test. The cash-strapped promotion closed up shop shortly thereafter, leaving Emelianenko (once again) the hottest free agent in mixed martial arts. After a hot and heavy pursuit from the UFC, Emelianenko opted to sign with Strikeforce primarily because of the co-promotion caveat. Rogers is coming off a devastating knockout win over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at the “Lawler vs. Shields” event from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., on June 6. Rogers was a +300 underdog heading into the fight but needed just 0:22 seconds to put “The Pitbull” to sleep — the second time for Arlovski in as many fights. “The Grimm,” now 10-0, looks poised to capitalize on his new found stature. “This sport is all about timing,” he said. “This fight took me to the next level and now is definitely my time. Everyone saw tonight that I am not one to play with.” We’ll find out soon enough as he now prepares to take on arguably the top mixed martial arts fighter on the planet. |
Re: Official MMA Thread
I tuned into the Scotty Farrell show on Sirus radio tonight and was treated to hear Fedor, Mousasi, and Rodgers being interviewed. Scotty asked Fedor all types of questions and Fedor gave his usual diplomatic response. One caller asked Mousasi about fighting Machida and Mousasi responded that it is a fight everybody wants to see and that he has better stand up skills than Machida but nobody gives him credit for that. Fedor also said that he has been training in a cage for the fight.
I'm expecting some good fights tomorrow night in the M1 event. While alot of the fighters don't have name reconition now they might after tomorrow. On another note Quinton Rampage Jackson is going to play Mr T in the new A-Team movie. |
Re: Official MMA Thread
I love listening to Farrell. I don't travel as much at night anymore so don't get to hear him as much which is unfortunate because he has a GREAT show and has always been very pro-MMA on it.

Re: Official MMA Thread
Yeah, didn't Ferrell do some backstage stuff with Affliction? I have listened to him since I first heard him on the old One-On-One Sports Network back in the early 90's
IS WEC ON THE COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION? by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com Perhaps Dana White has grown a little gun shy over the years, with all the media miscues on possible TV deals The Ultimate Fighter had several before it finally came to fruition in January of 2005 but the UFC president has all but confirmed the promotions intention to fold World Extreme Cagefighting into the Ultimate Fighting Championship. White and co.s decision appears to be more or less a timetable issue and negotiation between the sibling promotions television partners. In a rather telling exchange at the pre-fight press conference for this weekends UFC 102 in Portland, Ore., White was asked about adding more weight classes to the UFC, to which he replied, If we do any more weight classes, its gonna be lower, adding lighter weight classes. Asked what the chances of such additions actually were, he replied, very good, and indicated that a plausible timeframe for the additions was probably real soon. When pressed as to whether that meant that WEC would basically fold into the UFC, White replied as a Cheshire grin spread across his face, It doesnt really mean that, but... It really means that. The official company line, according to White: What that means is Ive gotta figure some (expletive) out. In a recent article on Yahoo! Sports, Kevin Iole suggested the UFCs decision to keep the WEC a separate entity from the UFC fundamentally depriving fighters such as Miguel Torres of the biggest stage in the sport was one of the most grievous mistakes that White and company CEO Lorenzo Fertitta have made in their eight-and-a-half year tenure. Sitting on the podium in front of a handful of reporters, including Iole, White said, I dont disagree with (the) article. He added later, Even with all the things that we know how to do and the deal with have with Versus, which is a great deal, its still hard to make money and pay the guys what they deserve to get paid, or what they think they deserve to get paid and to run the business and make it a profitable business. So whats holding him back? The complexities of TV land. The WEC recently extended its television contract with the Versus network. The UFC, meanwhile, is under an exclusive basic cable contract with the competing Spike TV network. Add to that a potential network TV deal in the works for the UFC, which White has hinted at for months, and three entities are competing for Zuffas attention. Ironing out those wrinkles appears to be the likely culprit in keeping the WEC in its current bubble. Its an obvious challenge, but White says its not insurmountable. Ive got some (expletive) I gotta figure out, he stated in true Dana White fashion, But like I said earlier, weve had bigger problems. I will figure this out. |

Randy Couture Vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - I'll take Couture
Keith Jardine Vs. Thiago Silva - Slug fest; Jardine by herky-jerky Chris Leben Vs. Jake Rosholt - Why is this on here Nate Marquardt Vs. Demian Maia - Margquardt by well roundedness Brandon Vera Vs. Krzysztof Soszynski - Should be a very good fight; probably the 2nd best of the night. UC: Gabriel Gonzaga Vs. Chris Tuchscherer - I'll take Brock's training partner. |

Dana White: WEC isn't going away, merger with UFC is unlikely
http://mmamania.com/2009/08/28/dana-...ly/#more-14815 Despite recent reports to the contrary, World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) isn’t “going away” anytime soon. UFC President Dana White reiterated the statement yesterday at the pre-fight press conference for UFC 102: “Couture vs. Nogueira,” saying that plans were not in place to merge the Zuffa-owned property and its roster of fighters into the UFC fold. In addition, there are plans afoot to possibly add lighter weight classes to the UFC — an area that is the primary focus of the WEC. While the idea seems fun in the eyes of most MMA fans, there are many parts of the business side of the sport that would prevent such a thing from happening … mainly the television deals. UFC currently has an exclusive deal with Spike TV while the WEC is partnered up with the Versus network. It would be very unlikely a deal could be struck involving both networks that wouldn’t leave one or both in a less profitable situation than they’re in now. For that reason, among others, White says the two promotions are going to remain separate for now, according to a Sherdog.com report. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t changes on the horizon for the WEC. The organization has long talked about adding a flyweight division (125 pounds) to its roster, and apparently that idea will come to fruition very soon, which is good news for a promotion starving for more marketable talent. It’s also no secret that the WEC fighters pull in far less money on average than that of a UFC fighter. While that has a lot to do with pay-per-view (PPV) revenue, it also has something to do with the marketability of the organization as a whole. Put simply, the WEC name just doesn’t carry the same weight as the UFC. Here’s what White had to say about that: “Even with all the things that we know how to do and the deal that we have with Versus — which is a great deal — it’s still hard to make money and to pay the guys what they deserve to be paid, or what they think they deserve to be paid, and to run the business and make it a profitable business. There is always going to be huge discrepancy in the pay between WEC and UFC.” For that reason, regardless of what happens right now, the merger could still continue to remain a future possibility. If an influx of more talent or adding another division can’t inject some life into the organization, then Zuffa might potentially have to look at it like its not marketing and pulling in money off of stars like Mike Brown, Brian Bowles, Urijah Faber, Miguel Torres, Jose Also, Donald Cerrone, and others like they could be doing if those fighters were competing in the Octagon instead. So the WEC will remain the WEC and the UFC will remain the UFC … for now. |
