Garry, I was late getting in on your original request, but am glad you found a source for your recent purchase of green coffee beans.

I'm going to add the following source located down our way in SoCal for your review, and possibly for your next purchase. Sign up for their email specials (discount codes). The codes are great when purchasing a few+ pounds. Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders also has a great selection to choose from too:

I blend about 90%of the time, usually a Sumatra or Monsooned Malabar with Central American and an African or Yemen. I roast separately and blend after. I like to drink my single origins on the weekends. My wife and I go through about 18-20oz./week.

That Costa Rican SHB sounds interesting, let us know how it turns out

Fired-up the West Bend Poppery II late this morning (sounds like a whopping commercial roaster doesn't it?) and roasted up some Brazil Bobolink Brown (about 15.25oz post-roast)...

Give it about 10 to 11 hours of de-gas time and we're ready to rock n roll:cf1

I saved some of the Yemen and Ethiopian for SO in my Aeropress and blended the rest. The blend has a big, silky body with complex chocolate, caramel, nuts and a bit of citrus in the cup this morning. The Yemen needs to rest a couple more days before the berries will pop out on the top end. Fantastic cup of coffee to say the least. :noon

I stopped by Bodhi Leaf yesterday and as suspected, when they changed their web site there were a couple of glitches, our discount code being one of them.

The 10% discount code, "CIGAR" is back in effect.

By the way, the warehouse is brimming with some really nice beans! :dr

What rule or how much do you measure of coffee to grind per cup?

It depends on the method used to brew your coffee, however, the standard ratio of coffee to water is 1 gram of coffee to 17 grams of water. Here's a great chart to use that covers all units of measurement

I have started weighing my coffee in grams so that I can get to that perfect cup. For my drip coffee it's around 40-45 grams for 8 cups.

Roasted 8oz of Kenya AA last night as the Rwanda I roasted earlier in the week just wasn't what I wanted to drink.

CigarSquid 08-29-2015 10:03 AM

I used a drip style, normally 8 cups.

I think I over-roasted this Maui Mokha. I only heard one or two snaps at first crack and kept pushing it longer, but then it hit second crack all at once and started smoking. Smells a little burnt. I'm going to clean the Behmor and roast another batch.

Roasted Guatemala Xinabajul Santa Barbara on Sunday and had my first cup today and it was really good. Roasted Costa Rica Helsar Miguel Rojas last night and I changed my roaster settings after doing some research on roasting profiles. I really need to look deeper into the whys of coffee roasting, any recommendations for books on coffee roasting? :cf1

I always struggle with what to buy. I don't really have a favorite yet as there are so many beans to try.

Some suggestions..?

Probably the best way to immerse yourself, is to simply purchase a sampler from one of the following:

Bodhi Leaf Trading (down this away in SoCal). You can use our coupon code of "cigar" for an extra 10% off your purchase:

http://www.bodhileafcoffee.com/colle...eves-favorites

You get 5lbs (5 one pound bags) from different regions at their choosing for you.

There is also Sweet Maria's up in Northern California for a sampler purchase:

https://www.sweetmarias.com/product/...coffee-sampler

You can choose a 4lb or 8lb sampler pack. They chose the green coffee beans and regions for you.

Roasted a blend last Sunday of equal parts Guatemala Premium Frijanes, Ethiopia Halo Bariti, and PNG Arokara in my new Aillio Bullet. Amazingly complex and fruity, medium acidity and syrupy mouthfeel. Loving this roaster! :banger

Check out Sweet Maria's. They have a lot of different beans, including blends. You should be able to get a sampler with a number of different ones you could try.

It's easy to get started and agree with Chainsaw's recommendation to check out Sweet Maria's. It's by far the best source for information on how to roast coffee at home. I started roasting with a stove top Wok, then a Whirley Pop, hot air poppers, Behmor, and now use a 1K Aillio Bullet. The link below will get you started in the right direction.

Another vote for Sweet Maria's, I just got in 10 pounds of Kenya AA from them. I use the Behmor 1600+ that I got from them and it still works pretty well after 3 years of use.

When you start roasting you will be able to get green beans from different countries to try and see what you like. I roast 1/2 pound at a time and usually twice a week switching between different coffees every couple of days. :2

if you don't have one already, a good burger grinder will make the biggest difference. They're not cheap, but they're worth every penny.

That's a decent entry level burr grinder, I used one for 6 years before upgrading to a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. Baratza Encore is a good grinder as well unless you will be brewing espresso.
