I'm a pound and a half into a 5 pound bag of Congo Kivu Bukavu-Beni from Sweet Maria's.

We really like this bean...then I looked at the short description and I notice part of the "flavor profile description" is Fresh Tobacco. That's a first for me :dr

Re: What are you roasting today?

^ that sounds delicious!

I honestly don't remember what I toasted on Monday. I didn't keep notes of this bag this time. :sh It was part of a Sweet Maria's special. Good stuff though.

gravel 03-25-2014 04:13 PM

Re: What are you roasting today?

Today I am roasting a pound of Rwanda Nyamasheke. I'll take this one right through first crack.

The flavor notes from Sweet Maria's describe this one as having "natural sugar sweetness, saturated black tea note, subtle fruit tones." I have three more pounds of this one and then my 20 lbs from the African bean special are done.

How have you liked the African coffees Geoff? Any favorites?

gravel 03-26-2014 03:19 PM

Re: What are you roasting today?

These African beans have been surprising. I generally expect bright floral/fruit flavors. This special illuminated beans that are different from what I considered the norm for Africa. The one I roasted yesterday has been my favorite of this batch.

My favorite bean was one I roasted 3 years ago when I started. I don't have the name, but I don't know if it matters. The coffee tasted a bit like graham crackers. It was like having a donut with your coffee... without the donut!

For reference I use a Behmor to roast.

Chainsaw13 05-06-2014 08:16 PM

Re: What are you roasting today?

Roasted a batch of Colombian Supremo today in the Behmor. Did this one out in the garage, instead of the basement. Had to use a heavy duty extension cord, which may have robbed it of power. It was a 13.3oz batch, used P2, C and added a minute. It started first crack around 1:40 left. After cool down it still looked really light to me. I read once in the Behmor forum about double roasting. Figured what the heck. Cleaned it out, set back up and ran on P1, A for another 10:30. Color is nice and chocolate brown. Smells good. We'll see in a couple days.

I roasted a lb of Guatemala Huehuetenango El Turbante. Half roasted to full city plus, half over roasted to light vienna. Should make for a decent espresso. I've never had a blend of different roasts so I'm excited to try it.

Switched over to roasting Yemen Mokha Ismaili at FC today.

Re: What are you roasting today?

Today I'll be roasting a pound of Columbia Tiana de Huila from Sweet Marias. The description says Malted caramel-vanilla, brown sugar, plum, and raisin. Viscous cup, notes of cinnamon and milk chocolate.

Sounds like a hearty cup! I'll be happy to be done with the Guatemala Huehuetenango El Turbante I over roasted. I didn't get into this to produce Charbucks flavored coffee =/.

Back at roasting the India Monsooned Malabar to full city.

Question to anyone who roasts this bean: Have you ever taken it to Vienna? If so, how do you like it vs. Full City?

Mr B 10-02-2014 05:38 PM

Re: What are you roasting today?

I have some of the Yemen Mokah on the way. Igot the India Monsooned about 2-3 years ago and did not like it no matter how it was roasted. I tried FC thru Vienna. I did not try lighter though. Probably should have. I gave it away. Just no my tastes I guess. I have not found many that I don't like.

Re: What are you roasting today?

14.375 oz of Colombia Viota Excelso FC - FC+. Roasted beans are resting in a glass mixing bowl de-gassing, and will be ready to brew on Tuesday AM:dr

Of interest, started with a total weight of 17.5 oz of green beans. End results was 14.375 oz of roasted beans.

After each roasting session and while the beans were warm, I popped a couple in my mouth here and there to chew on them. They produced a nice sweet honey essence, with a very lite caramel note in the background...

Brazil Bobolink Brown 14oz roasted FC+. Warm roasted bean chewed in the mouth produces a nice chocolate flavor. Looking forwards to Tuesday morning...

Thanks, it's nice to have a coffee roasting thread to share information with other home roasters. Had to clean the Behmor yesterday and I see there is some other maintenance to be done like cleaning the fans. I'm going to roast a batch of Yemen Mokha and then a batch of Java to create a Mokha Java blend later today. Not sure what the mix ratio is, but I will start at 50/50 and go from there. :D

My last order was from Burman, 5lbs of Brazilian Bob-O-Link and 5lbs of Indonesian Balinese. I see both are currently out of stock, but they have other varieties of each of those.

The half pound of Columbiam Supreme they sent wasn't too bad either.

Burman's is a great source for green coffee. There's so many options; what do you normally drink? What will you be roasting them with?

I don't normally drink one kind. I usually get a sampler or randomly pick some.

Other than looking at my order history from last time, I couldn't tell ya what I had.

I normally order from them or Sweet Maria's.

Check out either of the Papau New Guinea coffees if you like a darker roast and chocolaty cup.
The Mexican Terruņo Nayarita is a great medium bodied coffee.
Guatemala Hue Hue is usually a good full bodied coffee, try their Guatemala Huehuetenango Finca Injertal or the La Esperanza.
And you can never go wrong with an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

Let us know what you order :tu

Depends on if I get off my lazy butt and roast it up. Typically I can go through 12oz of beans in 7-10 days.
