William Larue Weller and George T. Stagg from the BT Antique Collection.
The Thomas H. Handy if you like ryes from the same collection
Parker's Heritage 27
PVW 15/21/23
For a less expensive one try the Noah's Mill Creek

Of that list the WLW or PH 27 are my favorites.

Knob creek is my go to for bourbon.

I know this thread has more of a purist tone to it, but when mixing bourbon, which do you reach for?

The reason I ask is with the Derby coming up, I will be making some mint julep's. Right now I only have a few sipping bourbon's and not sure I want to use them for the juleps. However, cheap bourbon usually means a cheap tasting mix drink as well. What are your thoughts?

For juleps, I like Bulleit!

As with any cocktail, a higher quality liquor produces a better drink, IMO.
Would you use a $200+ bottle for cocktails? Of course not. But any high-end bottle, say < $50, wll make a much better drink than the standard well booze. :2

I agree.

I have been reading some on the subject and it seems the better Bourbon's to use are the more woody, spicey ones than the sweeter ones to account for the sugar added in the julep. That sounds good to me, and gives me another reason to go buy some woodier bourbon's. :D

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

My rule of thumb is that I won't use a liqour to mix with that I wouldn't drink straight (I rarely drink a mixed drink though). That being said, I would probably use Bulleit or Jim Beam to mix with.

Just picked up a bottle of Elmer T. Lee. Usually go with Bulleit. I am the type who won't pay over 40 bucks for a bottle unless the occasion calls for it. Hope I chose well.

I have a bottle of this. It is on the sweeter end of the spectrum, but somehow it's also on the harsher end as well. The balance of sweet and smooth is not there.

BTW, this is the exact bourbon I am thinking of using in the mint julep.

Knob Creek and ginger ale is my go to drink of choice.

If you like rye or 'wheatier' / sweeter bourbon's, do try Bulliet. It is moderatley priced, and outstanding.:=:

Just found the tread and I gotta say, I am all in. I love Bourbon. A few of my staples in my cabinet are:
Elijah Craig 12 yr
Buffalo Trace
Eagle Rare 10yr
Ezra B 12yr
Old Weller 107
Evan Williams 1999
Bullit

I tell you now, my absolute cigar/whiskey combo: Elijah Craig 12 year and a Joya de Nicaragua Antano Gran Consul.

I was visiting my parents in Kentucky and visited Makers Mark on the Bourbon Trail. It was my first time tasting it and I really liked it. Now I'm ready to sample a few others. Any suggestions for a newb?

I also got to dip my own bottle while I was there. It was kind of a cool experience being able to dip and take the bottle home.

jrw 06-09-2010 06:43 PM

Maker's 46

I hope this hasn't already been posted, but it didn't appear in a search.

A new bourbon created by Maker's Mark: Maker's 46. I'm going to look for it.

You should try 1492, Woodford's Reserve, Blanton's, and Booker's, to name a few. There are so many good ones out there...

One of the recommendations that I received (many times) was the Evan Williams Single barrel and I highly recommend it too.

Speaking of using Bourbon in a mixed drink..

A couple weekends ago I was making Whiskey sours and used Ancient Ancient Aged and they came out great. The stuff is cheap but it definitely worked out great. A lot of non-bourbon drinkers agreed too. FWIW

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

My bourbon of choice varies, so I always try to keep the following on hand:
Bulliet
Woodford Reserve
Elijah Craig 18 yo
Eagle Rare
1792
Russel's reserve 10 yo
Maker's Mark
That way, I can select according to my mood. Those are the "utility bourbons"

I also have a few others, depending on the week and proximity to pay day. :) Really good ones don't tend to last very long.

I'd direct you to Eagle Rare as well.
I'm finishing off the last bit of my Eagle Rare, which is chilled in my Flask at the Camper for the weekends.

*Disclaimer I know its not a bourbon*

Currently I am drinking Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond. Thanks to Tony, Patrick and others who mentioned this earlier in the thread. This stuff is fantastic and affordable. For the longest time I couldn't find it around here then Joey (ir13) found it while visiting me for a herf. For any whiskey /bourbon lover it gets my recommendation.

If I could find this locally, I probably wouldn't drink anything else.

Right now I am enjoying the Bulleit.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I like Bulliet. Bulliet has a habit of revealing new flavors as it sits on a few ice cubes for a few minutes, as does the Woodford Reserve. I like it with some of the more full bodied cigars. where I will usually pair a Milder cigar with the Evan Williams single barrel or one of the higher end Russel concoctions; rare breed or Russel reserve 10 yo.

I looove some Van Winkle. 12yr Lot B is awesome, but the Pappy 15yr is phenomenal. Hell I'm in KY, work at a liquor store, and it's hard to get a hold of - granted it's a huge liquor store. It may be easier to get at smaller ones around here.

I thought it was good. It is not my all-time favorite bourbon, but it is very nice. It is very similar to standard maker's mark, but I thought the "toasted oak staves" made it a bit smoother. It is definetly worth picking up a bottle to add to the bourbon collection. :)

Found a new (to me at least) liqour store near my house and they have the best bourbon collection I've seen around these parts.. I think I'm going to try that Makers 46 and pick up some Jefferson's reserve :dr they also have the presidential select which I'm dying to buy a bottle of!

Finished off a bottle of the MM 46 last week. I almost always drink my bourbon neat, but I had to put some water in the 46 to make it drinkable. It's not that high of a proof, just seemed harsh to me. I'm not a huge MM fan anyway, and I won't be buying any more 46.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

markem and I recently attended a "Cigars and Whiskey" even where they featured Bulleit Bourbon. All of the drinks that night were made from Bulleit and they also used it to flavor some of the food.

It was very nice and I found a new bourbon that I really like!
