Ben Sheets for Cy Young! :tu

How do you let a guy who hasn't thrown a baseball in the majors for over 2 years, throw 6 innings, of 2 hit, shutout ball, against you?

The second half of the season has not started off too well.

Thanks, Dom, for the perpetual reminder of a statement that I made when the Yanks swept one of the Mets NL rivals.

Hey Met fans, time to dust off your Jason Bay jersey's.
He's off the DL and back in the lineup tonight. :tu

Dust off? Maybe. But question is, would you have time to get 'em back from the cleaners before he's BACK on the DL? :D

Thomas, I like to leave them with a little hope in their hearts.
That way, it's far more rewarding when they fail! :D :r:r

Hang on Philly...here we come!! F&*^ing bullpen!!! :bh :bh :bh

And Bay...0-3 and gets pinch hit for in the 9th...and Valdespin hits another HR. RELEASE BAY NOW!!!!

Bay must go. He has a ton of heart, but hasn't produced a lick since he joined the Mets.

Also....here we go with the Curse of the All-Star Break.

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Last night was the exact reason why I knew not to get emotionally involved with this team. After all the promise they have shown, they are still an very flawed team, and really weren't as good as their record.

Through 4 innings tonight...the Mets offensive struggles continue. We have two hits, and Wright has them both. :bh :bh

Mets drop another one...we have not won since the All Star break. Guess a second half collapse is going to start a little earlier than normal this year. :bh :bh :bh

The bright spot is that we are are still ahead of the Phillies (who are still in the cellar) by 6 games. :D :D

Second half collapses usually start in the second half, Mac. ;)

Even when Jason Bay homers, you don't give him any credit!
If you were looking for a bright spot, that was it.
If the Mets are going to do anything, Bay has to be the right handed bat they desperately need.

BTW, after all the Omar bashing, surprised Sandy isn't getting any grief here.
He had one job to do in the off season, fix the bullpen, and that, IMO, is the Mets biggest weak spot.

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

The bullpen is terrible. They are going to have to pull the trigger on a trade before the season spirals out of control.

But we usually wait til September to fall apart...not July. :D Bay gets no respect from me...for the money we paid/pay him..he has produced ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! Complete waste!!

And I do agree...Sandy did absolutely squat to fix the bullpen. I am at least going to give him til the trading deadline before I start to bad mouth him. :r :r

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Hey...we finally win one. Wright (2 HR, 5 RBI) and Dickey (13th win) both have good games and the offense finally wakes up.

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Santana gives up three runs in the first...he just hasn't been himself since the no-hitter.

kelmac07 07-21-2012 05:40 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Mets lose to the Dodgers 7-6...good news ias that the bullpen only gave up one run in 6 innings...the bad news, Santana gave up 6 in 3 innings. :bh :bh

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Met lose another one to the Dodgers today, 8-5. WTF is Collins doing bringing Dickey in from the bullpen in the eight??? He is tied for the ML league in wins and you bring him out of the bullpen??? In my eyes, this is a MORON MOVE!!! If you are hurting for relievers that bad...call up some AA/AAA kids, they can't do any worse that what's coming outta the bullpen now. Come on man!! :bh :bh :bh

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

At 47-47...the Mets are in danger of dropping under .500 for the first time in a few months. And to think we were 6 or 7 games over .500 for this long. At seasons beginning, I'd thought we'd be 15 games under by now.

Santana takes a trip to the DL.

For all the talk about how well the Mets are doing this year, believe it or not, they had a better record this time last year, than they do now!
On this date, last year, the Mets were 1 game over .500.
Don't worry Mac, there's plenty of time for the Mets to get 15 games under! :D

Mets give up 5 runs in the 12th and lose to the Dodgers 8-5. And Bay strikes out to make the last out in the bottom of the 12th...batting .195. :td :td

And we drop a game under .500!! :wo :wo

Mets bullpen implodes in the 10th as we lose to the Nats 8-2. :bh :bh Of course, Tejadas error didn't help matters.

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Given that they were playing in a swamp by then and Bernadina was barreling down on him, it was going to be a tough play. The end of the bullpen did implode though. The Nats were due one since their bp did the same thing a few games ago against ATL.

I couldn't believe the condition of the field after the 6th...it's like the ground crew went on strike. No dry sweep, nothing.

It did look pretty bad. Lots of standing water on top of the clay. That must have been slippery.

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Dicket gets blown up in the 6th as the Mets lose to the Nats, 5-2. At this rate, won't be long before we're in the cellar again. :bh :bh

The real question...will the Mets keep Wright???

Dave128 07-25-2012 09:04 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

As much as it would kill me to see Wright go, he might be better off. Although, Alderson should be building the team around him.

They Did build the team around Wright!
Remember those teams that fell apart, all those years in a row?
They were built around Wright and Reyes! :2

The Mets should absolutely trade Wright!
Why? Because he will absolutely sign with them again in the off-season!
Why? Because NOBODY OVERVALUES David Wright like the Mets and their fans!
Why? I have no idea why!
I've never seen a player be more loved for doing absolutely nothing.
He's won nothing here, and his stats aren't that impressive!

kelmac07 07-25-2012 09:48 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Absolutely nothing??? Come on Dom. While he hasn't won anything...he has been an All Star caliber third baseman and a stellar member for the Mets, both in the clubhouse and in the community. While his numbers aren't HOF material, he is a damn fine ballplayer and an even better guy. And he's old school in that he plays the game the right way. Is he ever gonna have Jeter's rings or numbers? NO...but then again he's never had a supporting cast like Jeter. But that doesn't mean he has done absolutely nothing.

Stats for 7 1/2 years in the big leagues...while not HOF matieral, but I'd take him over any Yankee third baseman (except maybe for Nettles who had a better glove, but didn't hit much).

1199 Games, 4507 At Bats, 761 Runs, 1367 Hits, 2310 Total Bases, 311 2B, 19 3B, 198 HR, 792 RBI, 591 BB, 956 SO, 161 SB, 52CS, .303 AVG, .384 OBP, . 513 SLG

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Mac, you misunderstood me.
I was not slamming David Wright, I was slamming Met fans.
You hit the nail on the head when you said "while not HOF material"
And, I agree, he's not, but Met fans act like, and treat him, as if he is an un-replaceable, all time great.
I think David Wright is a fine ballplayer, and His numbers fall in line with a ton of good ballplayers, but he is easily replaceable!
His career averages are .300/22hr/88rbi, in line with players like Damon, Eithier, Swisher.
All good players, but none that are un-replaceable.
You can't even argue that he has intangible value.
What's the biggest, best, most defining moment of his career?
Very hard to come up with one!
Why?
Because he's never won a big game, with his bat or his glove!

While I agree that he shouldn't be deemed untradeable, my thought is this. Isn't it better to have a real good clubhouse guy like Wright, a professional hitter, a guy who does the right thing, and is there to teach the younger generation you are trying to bring up? I'm not saying build around him, but build with him. Like you said Dom, we overvalue him more than anybody else, so what are we going to get back for him? Maybe 1 solid prospect and a few guys who may never crack the big leagues? In my mind I'd rather have him here, because I just don't think there is value out there, and teams aren't screaming "we want David Wright and are willing to give up our 3 best prospects for him."

kelmac07 07-25-2012 10:23 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

No arguement other than he is currently the face of the franchise. The Mets need to build around something...if they don't stand for something, they'll fall for everything. What better player to build around than David? We cannot continue to shuttle old and past their prime free agents in and out of the lineup thinking we'll gonna hit the lotto and win. We need to rebuild our farm system and stick with it. Our pitching is horrendous this year..and what has Alderson done to fix it?? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

And don't get me started on Bay. :bh :bh :bh

kelmac07 07-25-2012 05:34 PM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

And the slide continue as we get swept by the Nats 5-2 this afternoon. We've won one damn game since the all star break....ONE!! :bh :bh :bh

And they send Duda down to Triple A...why the hell wasn't Ike sent down earlier?? I don't understand this team at all.

kelmac07 07-27-2012 05:33 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

Mets beat the Dbacks last night 3-1 as Harvey makes his MLB debut and strikes out 11 in 5 1/3 innings and goes 2-2 at the plate. Surprised the bullpen didn't blow it for him. :D

Dave128 07-27-2012 08:20 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

The bullpen tried to blow the game, but they didn't succeed! Harvey did a great job. I was impressed that he was throwing all different angles - inside and outside, up and down. I hope he can settle in and be reliable.

kelmac07 07-28-2012 07:15 AM

Re: New York Mets 2012 Banter

As the slide continues, Neise melts down in the 2nd. We lose to the Dbacks 11-5. That cellar is getting closer and closer.

I never came in here proclaiming Cano as a "player who plays the game the right way".
If fact, the M.O. on Cano is that he's a lazy player, with talent that makes up for his shortcomings in the hustle department.
His being lazy and not working hard enough is what led to the trade of Melky Cabrera.

I just think one or two indiscretions on Wrights part pale in comparrison to the best player on the Yankees either hotdogging it or not putting in half the effort he should.

All that aside, Wight is a leader, and using your own argument, the Mets value him more than any other team will, so when we wouldn't get much back, why trade him. In light of Harvey coming up and being very good the other night, and the rumors that they may even bring up Wheeler this year, I think having a veteran presence in the locker room is necessary. Who else is that going to be? Maybe Johan or Dickey, but it is pretty clear to see that Wright is the leader of the team.
