It's the golden rule; whoever has the gold makes the rules.

I love the payroll argument.
Sort of the "wealth redistribution" argument of baseball fans.
Yankees suck because they have revenue, they spend it as they please in an attempt to win, and generally, are successful as evidence by their history.

So........when I hear that argument......I laugh. Deep down, they wish their team made as much money and their owner spent as much.

Also, if Chrysler spent their money more wisely, they'd be competing with Toyota.

Life is full of painful little lessons.

This will be 27 titles if my math is correct.

I steer clear of politics, but sure hope Obama isn't a Red Sox fan.

I wasn't saying it's a bad thing. :)
It sure makes a heck of a story when a bunch of scrubs step up and spank the Yanks, though.
It's just a given that they own the World Series, cause they paid for it.
I love watching good ball, too, and the Yanks sure delivered this year. It's been an amazing season for them.
That game last night, for instance. It was a thing of beauty. I definately got my money's worth, and I ain't got a dime in it. :D
The Angels definately threw the kitchen sink at them, even if they came up way short.

I did hear a comment Buck made about Scott Kazmir that I'm still shaking my head about. He said the Angels picked up Kazmir specifically because he was a Yankee stopper. I must have missed that along the way.
Kazmir has never played up to my expectations, and I really never had any. :r
Yankee stopper? Where'd that come from?
I'd go look at his box scores, but I figure you guys might have the numbers in your head, and I'm busy. And lazy. :)

I'm also voting for a raise for arod.
He's pretty much been baseball this year.
Unbelievable. :tu

Re: Yankees vs Angels ALCS 2009

In his career against the Yankees, Kazmir has a 6-4 record and 2.53 ERA:banger

All bets off this year.

No raise necessary for A-Rod, a half billion between him and CC should suffice.

Funny how that all works out.
Freaking Diamond Backs and Marlins!!! Thorns. Or Boston in '04. Thorns!!!

When we get one, we bought it.
When we don't, we overpaid and didn't get it.

Meantime, anyone check the payroll of the Mets as an example?
Where did they end up this year?
Quite a few others like that.
It happens. Money doesn't always do it. However, like they say with the Lotto, you have to be in it to win it.:D

That is funny stuff there about Kazmir.

The small market teams could sign players also with all the money they get from the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets & Dodgers. Their owners prefer to pocket the money instead of putting it back into the team. The Steinbrenners would rathder lose money on the team if it meant winning and making the fans happy.

That's why they call it a luxury tax. You pay for the luxury of consistently winning and filling stadiums wherever you go.

Re: Yankees vs Angels ALCS 2009

There are half-a-dozen teams that spend money like drunken sailors, not just the Yankees. The biggest difference is that, when the Yanks make a mistake (can you say "Carl Pavano", for instance?), they have both the will and the means to eat the error and attempt to correct it with another move. Other teams just shrug and say "Wait 'til next year."

Speaking of next year, any more word on Sabathia in an Angels uniform next season?

No offense, but players don't leave The Bronx - The Bronx leaves them.

Not unless the Yanks trade him. He can opt out of his current contract after three years. He'll likely do that anyway to squeeze more money out of the Yanks but I don't see him leaving NY anytime soon. No one else can pay him as much as we do!

Again, no offense to Angel fans intended, but aside from Torii Hunter I can't think of anything they have the Yankees might want - and he ain't enough.

Must just be a rumor, probably started by an Angels fan, down over last nights game.

I'd trade Melky Cabrera for Torii Hunter.:tu

I wouldn't. The last thing the Yankees need is another ageing outfielder. They have Swisher signed thought 2010, and they will have to decide on Damon & Matsui, both put up numbers to make it hard to let them go away even thoug hthey are old and brittle. Plus they still need to see what they have in Austin Jackson.

I agree completely. If I was Cashman this is what I would do next year after we win the WS this year. I would not sign both Damon and Matsui ( I believe they are both making $14 million this year). I would take the savings and go after John Lackey (6 years $100 million). I would promote Austin Jackson from AAA to play left and have Melky and Gardner platoon at center with Swisher at right. I would resign Pettite for one more year. The pitching staff would be CC, AJ, Lackey, Pettite and either Joba or Hughes with one of them going to the bullpen as a set-up man for Mo.

I like how you think.

They need to keep at least 1 of them. That is a lot of HRs & RBIs to lose in the lineup. No long term deal though. As for Lackey, I would pass on him.

Well, looks like Philly is on their way to hopefully meet the Yankees.
Third inning, winning 4-2.
Torre better get things going or no tomorrow for him.

Re: Yankees vs Angels ALCS 2009

I don't know the Phillies staff, and as the Yankees still have some ALCS work to do I really don't dare tempt the baseball gods. Yet at that risk I'll say that the Phils would be advised to avoid using Pedro if at all possible.

Umpires in this series should be shot.

Four runs for the Yankees is not a big deal and plenty of time left but have to start fast.

Even if lose today, I will take Yankee stadium up three to two, any day.

The Angels are a very good team. This Yankee fan never expected a roll over.

Angels just got robbed out of a K.
Same as when Teixeira got called out on an obvious ball earlier in the game.
