Brazil Dattera Sweet Blue from ThetaRidge

I have a gallon of cold brew going at home and I FPd a cup this morning, it is a very good bean, glad I picked up 10lbs!

Re: What are you roasting today?

Sumatra Lintong Tano Batak

This stuff was weird to roast. For starters, the beans were large and a darker shade of green. The roast time seemed to be fairly long and I roasted into the start of 2nd crack shooting for FC+. Although I still have some chaff in the cracks, the beans are nearly black, very expanded and some have some chunks missing from them, as if it's closer to a French. Anyone have any experience with Sumatra? Is it normal for the beans to have a darker shade?

I had similar experiences with this bean. I couldn't get mine to 2nd crack in the hot air popper. First batch I did barely made any sound for first crack, just one big pop, then not much else.

I bought a couple things:
http://cdnroot.filtersfast.com/ProdI...fee-Filter.jpg

http://img4-3.realsimple.timeinc.net...tainer_300.jpg

I put the ground coffee into the gallon container and fill about 3/4 up with water and stir.
I leave it sit in room temp for about 24 hours.
I pour it through the gold filter.
Then fill up the rest of the container with milk.
Add 6 heaping spoons of sugar.
Stir, pour over ice.

It seems to work out about 3:1 coffee to milk for me, although many recipes call for 50/50.
You can also use water to cut it instead of milk if desired.
You don't even need to add sugar, it is pretty damn sweet naturally.
Mine tastes comparable to Starbucks Frap in the bottle IMO, but mine is a shade darker.

Not really, I know the mark on my grinder. I played with it until it tasted just right. If I had a scale I would weigh it. Maybe next time I will measure it.

So far, out of the 3 above, the Ethiopia is my favorite.

I did what they recommended on the bag.. first time I was able to taste what they described on there. Great source to get coffee, I think.

Re: What are you roasting today?

Yea, I'm still not sure about Sumatran myself. Try the Brazil roasted darker next time. I think they taste better darker.

CigarSquid 06-14-2012 08:37 PM

Re: What are you roasting today?

Sumatra one wasn't to bad.. I did enjoy it. The Brazil was my least. Still a good coffee, but at the lighter roast, way to much sweet taste like they described. I made notes to roast the Brazil darker next time.

I roasted another batch of Brazilian Sweet Blue, I can't get enough of this stuff!

If you guys are interested in purchasing at least 10 pounds at a time you really gotta request a price sheet from Thetta Ridge!

Roasted some Ecuador Organic Batan Microlot last night, to just before 2nd crack.

Thinking of getting me a birthday gift and ordering the Behmor from SM's. I like the simplicity of the popper and have my technique dialed in, but trying to do large amounts just takes way too long.

DO IT!!!

You will not be disappointed [u]at all[u]. I love mine. And trust me, the Behmor is the definition ofr simplicity. I doubt you will ever get your poppers back out again. I have 5 poppers, so I could rotate while others cooled. I used them for 2 years. Its probably the best way to learn your technique. However not having to stand over my poppers any more and being able to do 1/4 - 1 lb lots at a time is such a huge benefit. Plus the roast level is so much more consistant compared to having to do 6 different roasts to get a pound from the popper.
I am not slamming the popper guys at all. I was one for years. This is just to encourage any one who is thinking about moving it up to the next level.
